I haven't bouldered seriously for years, in favor of roped routes.
But Scott and I were walking in the woods and came across a few short, juggy beauties.
I couldn't help it! Hey, I know I'm not all V12 'n' shet, but I'm always up for a share.
Show me yours!

Thanks Ryan!
As you can see, since we can't crank the Gnar, especially with walking shoes, I just try to get a little artsy fartsy.
Still fun though.

Cool stuff Survival, for me bouldering is about having fun, enjoying movements on the stone & being outside. Sometimes alone, sometimes with others. I like your pics, creative. Hopefully we'll see more from you & others here :-)

First is a probably FA at a crag that no one in flagstaff cares for anymore apparently. The lower lake mary basalt is great fun for top roping and fun aid practice when your skin gets trashed.
Gloria's Rocks, love em or hate em, they are great quality boulders a couple hundred yards from the parking lot.

Started looking at this line yesterday (project). Low hands to a decent edge overhead, but nothing obvious above that - I kept melting off the footholds while I tried to move up.

remember that weeze fest solo!
pull in, setup camp, check the thunderstorm status... go for a "warm up" solo...
ah the memories...
at that point the entire visual field was a tiny point of light far off in the distance... with the universe starting to spin about it...

Jaybro,
where is University of Mars? that was one of the few remaining boulder problems that I really wanted to climb out in Vedauwoo this season....but I had no idea where it was.
I wanted to develop a huge one-day circuit of Vedauwoo roof crack boulder problems: Spin To Win, Nat's Roof, Beer Crack, Biggest Tits..., Life Without Parole, Desiderata, etc...however, a bunch of stuff I just never found.

I've been bouldering 2-3 times a week on rock for about 6 months, in idyllwild then the high Sierra and now bishop. Took a few weeks off when I was pretending to be a runner, but almost always by myself, with my wee pad and water bottle and head phones.
Got a job so been waking up and climbing pre-sunrise to get a session in the happies. It's been surreal to see this magical area during the most beautiful parts of the day and experience the climbs truly solo - I'll get frustrated and ask Ruppel beta (thanks bro!) or check youtube, but it's fulfilling to know when I topped a problem that it was an experience I owned absolute.
The feeling I get when on big ridge scrambles, or trying to solo a wall, or before the sun warms the volcanic pockets...I'm drawn to it because i know that I did it.
At the end of the day the only interpretation of the experience was mine, and like reading a book but never seeing the movie my imagination runs wild.
The harder problems feel like slaying the Dragon and I'm often left bruised and defeated under their girthy undersides.... But for some reason I love it.
Mid-afternoon from a rare visiting friend, part of a beautiful set of pictures she took on a bad ass road trip:

Took the gear for a walk but it was kind of soggy so we just decided to work the sh#t outta this project up in the little smoke bluffs instead that we have dubbed "blunt arête" due to its bluntness & proximity to the neo classic RyanD stoner problem called roaches corner. We slapped & crimped & hucked our little hearts out but it's still there waiting for someone with the smooth moves.
Here's Kyle thinking about stepping up to the mantel on roaches corner. Thinking was as far as he got today, next time.

Yep, Randisi: it's on the hill behind my house. If you like bouldering, it's pretty rad. My wife and I had the place to ourselves for about eight years, but since then the locals learned how to boulder and they've put up some hard stuff in recent years.

Nice stuff Yanqui. In keeping with the spirit of neighbourhood bouldering i was able to nab an FA last night thanks to the power company logging under the power lines about 100' from my front door. Thanks BC hydro!!
The left arete is still a project.
Edit- Justin, just saw ur comment above.
Viper is probably the most popular v5 in Squamish, despite being only 2 moves. The one tagged brownie @ the wheel is a neo classic called "no holds barred" & it's fukking badass! Burly underclings & kneebars then a reach to the arête, finishes up the high arête. My pic does it no justice, clocks in at v6 they say but damn it feels hard!!! Really want to do it this summer!

Here, if there's any moss it's been baked so hard you could use it for feet.

On La Barrosa, we have something like 500 established problems and lots of potential for more and harder stuff.
There is another extensive area about 35 kilometers away (near Sierra de los Padres) on the same kind of rock that also has around 500 established problems.

It's pretty big time out here in Colorado. Even an entire guidebook for areas below tree-line in RMNP and Mt. Evans. The modern Colorado boulderer is pretty motivated. The hike to the highest portions of Chaos Canyon can be 2-3+ hours! If only these guys were that psyched on standard alpine climbing... Maybe it's good that they are not though.

Props on ur send of Luminance u posted a ways back too. My friend Charlie did the second or third of that one. I gave him a spot & it was terrifying, he made me build a gear anchor & I had to lean out over the pit ready to tension swing into a body check to knock him down in the pads if he popped, lol luckily he hiked it cause it was free send day.
Incredible, harrowing line that one is.

So a few people have commented on some of my shots about the moss or cleaning process so here's some pics of the process to give you a bit of an idea about developing boulders around here.
So this face has 2 classic lines apparently, first climbed in 97 I think. Anyways we wanted to do them but it looked like they had gotten a little scruffy.
We set to work.
Nina and Kyle showed up and pitched in.
After a few hours we had this.
We cleaned it properly so the moss would not grow back, it also yielded 2 fun new problems. A easy but very high arête up the elephant trunk on the right & a fun high slab around the corner. Fun!
Then we got on this.

Hey flip flop easy bud, have you ever climbed here? What do you know about local ethics and history of bouldering in Squamish? Have you done FAs here which required no cleaning?
People had asked me how we deal with the moss so I posted about it. This is how things are done here, It's a nice fantasy to think you can walk into a rainforest and find gleaming cubes of granite all ready to climb but that's not how it goes down. You guys should see the efforts that go into development for cragging and multipitch up this way, your fukkin head would probably explode.
As mentioned, come climb here. I'll even give you the tour, then form your opinion.
if you don't like it.

You could answer my questions flip flop, or you could carry on with grossly exaggerated, built for anonymous Internet forum user type assumptions like you seem to like to do. I was trying to be cool about it but you just want to speculate on something you know nothing about and call names?
Or you could post some climbing content on the climbing thread rather than making your first posts here inflammatory and trying to start an argument.
I'd be interested in a conversation or hearing how you develop boulder problems, but if that is how you want to be about then you can eat a giant bag of dicks.
You don't know sh#t about climbing up here.
I could make a wild assumption like you and say you don't know sh#t about climbing at all. My hunch is you have probably never developed a bouldering area or made contributions in the way of new routing at all, anywhere. But I don't know you so speculation like that just wouldn't be fair.
Anyways i'm going to go climbing now.

this type of cleaning happens in many coastal environments. We have lots of moss at most of my local bouldering spots. Lots of hard work to clean, but there are no baby bunnies getting slaughtered, or salamanders or rare plants or epiphytes, only.......MOSS.

I think its terrible that you are removing moss and lichen just so you can swagger up some piece of rock. Also you are leaving pieces of rubber (probably full of BPA, gasp) all over the rock, and trampling multiple pieces of vegetation, killing countless microbes in the process. I think you should just go home and shoot yourself.
Meanwhile we live in the desert where nothing is alive anyway so we dont have to clean the rocks to climb them. Here is a picture of jamie swaggering her way up a quartzite roof that is rather fun.

HA, you f*#king moss killers. Flip, you realize that's their local ethic that is essential for climbing up there? Have no fear, once our species is extinct that moss will grow back in a couple years. My next bouldering sesh just might be in Squamish. I wonder if there are any boulderers up there?
Since Jefe reposted a pic, I can too. Dick move blowing out the borders though. Sorry.

also to pass the pipe, is to sesh.
When ,once along time before pads
The great late Kevin Bien, the Mayor of the Gunks
Shared an afternoon sesh of the bouldering kind,
He showed me the Gill problems, and the Cilliys
He made it fun and it is one of my most bitter sweet
Uberfall memories. We had climbed together many times. In Wyoming,
In South Dakota and the Gunks, but that afternoon was his last ever there
Within hours he was flying out and away to the cruel crumbling choss pile,of
The Matterhorn,
R I P, salute', I miss you Kevin.

Ho my I have left the Gunks they added bolts and every thing is, pardon me but, is gunked up!
I do not know how the Divine one is doing!
nor why I am having my period !
Weepy, I have now climbed on the third stone from the sun longer than Kevin lived!
I have kids! Surely there is a cold spot in hell.
When I was ten Kevin saw me get stung and fall from the corner below the crux of High
Exposure, back to the GT ledge he kicked me, one shot! It caught me in the crook of my neck!
Stopped me from going off the ledge, maybe saved my life, as I said I was ten I don't think he
was thirty yet!

So some photos of a project here in the UK, in the wilds of Northumberland.
One of our local outcrops has a mighty prow, which has become a project for one of the UK's most capable boulderers. The overhangs at about 40 degrees and is very sharp. Thus far it has been done from the stand, and from the sit up to the last move......at around 8b+.
My own moment of glory was getting up the wall to the right, at 7a+ a warm up for the main event!

Sorry for the format, but this video's kind of fun because of the Batman move Santi does to get the flash (when he messes up the last move he drops back down in the air to catch the jug below and then gets it right the second time up). This was the easier of the boulders (maybe V6 or V7) in the exhibition part of last weekend's feste and just about everybody flashed it! The kids sure are getting strong

Bouldering takeover!!
Here's an edit from a sesh this summer. I went and gave my friend Jack a spot on a line he had been creeping on for 15 years and finally got psyched enough to clean it up and go for it. I was shitting my pants while spotting but fortunately the breeze kicked up when he got to the very high crux and he cruised it. Can't see this one getting many repeats but it's a beauty of a line.

RyanD-
Great video of your friend. I love suave, techy granite moves but damn that's high.
Not sure what the landing's like, not that it even matters....
I went out with some crushers yesterday, mostly to take photos and check out the area.
Here's a mini tr in photos:
The walk
Big blocks, big cactus
Warmup V2
Visiting climber on a V12
Third ascent
The line we came to do
Setting up for the huge crux bump on the first ascent. V7
Second ascent
Grom first ascent V3
Mad dogging the far away hold on a project
Always fun to be around when cool sh¡t goes down. Super motivating.
Boulderers here a generally highly motivated, as almost all of the bouldering involves long approaches, with weather and flora/fauna often working against them.
This particular area has a distant history of, of course, Bob Murray exploration, and has many modern hard and high problems on very good rock. Winter only.

The dude definitely cored up for that one. Probably only eight tries or so. Plus he was super cool- older and been climbing a long time. We were way older than everyone else. Plus he's a fiveTen guy :-O
The line we went to do was so good. The guys had been the day before to suss it. Both sent second try.
That area is very cool, with plenty of new stuff to do.

Looks like I'll carpet bomb another page!
A visit to my favorite boulder garden, where it all began.
Fine grained granite, flat landings, history, five star problems, serene setting.
This area is very special to many people. Countless climbers learned basic movement here, it is a great teacher.
Visiting now, twenty years since my heyday, is a trip through time...where engrams and names and lighting and smells and textures wash over me...run through me, slap me in the face.
If there is one single place I've left more DNA, more heart, more focus, exploded brain cells, fried tips, bruised heels, failures, solitary victories, group energy, first ascents, dogs long past, screams in the forest, sunsets on a slab, friendships...
It's Groom Creek, my favorite boulders.

Joe and I were roommates for a year in graduate school back in 1988. Hooked up again for the first time in almost 30 years last January in Red Rocks. This year he was gonna meet me in Frey but then he broke his collar bone skiing three days before the flight. Since there was no refund on the tickets he came three weeks later straight to Balcarce. So it's the second time in 30 years, but he says he's coming back for more next year.

So I just discovered this thread. But I'm kind of confused... Like did you guys forget to pack your ropes or something? I mean, it looks like you're doing climbing moves, but on the ground.
I remember that happening once. Got to the base of the route and unpacked, and then we're looking at each other like "But I thought you were bringing the rope."
It was too far to go back, so we didn't know what to do. In the end we drank all the beers and practiced a few climbing moves on this rock that was near the base of the real climbing.
Is that what happened to you guys?

Jeremy- great as always. Not climbing very strong right now but DRL Daze is more about friends. The bouldering is just the icing on the cake for me.
BIOTCH yeah, just missed the Chinchen squad by a day.
So many great memories that fall under the "That's Bouldering right there" category.
Distilled moments. From the sends, the laughs, the failures...it's all good.
Here's my mini triumph:
15 years ago I rolled through town to kick it with my homies and went up to the Milks for an evening circuit. I was living at the beach in full surf mode and hadn't climbed in a few years.
Much of the Buttermilks is hard and/or high so I was relegated to mostly cruisers.
Right next to the Peabodies is a boulder called The Peewee. If it weren't next to two of the biggest boulders in the world it would be considered a pretty big rock.
There's an attractive line on it that appealed to me, we call it the Baby Bachar, so I gave it a go.
One go.
I was too scared to commit to the insecure crux and the height following.
So I bailed.
I've been back to The Buttermilks numerous times since, always wanting to go back to the Peewee but never did. I'm usually following my posse of crushers around to their projects and doing the downclimbs lol.
This time I said I would not let another trip to Bishop go by without going back to the Baby Bachar.
It haunted me because I have this old photo on my bookcase and I see it every day.
On my last day there, I felt it slipping away. I still hadn't been back to the Peewee and time(and skin!) was limited.
My friends were on a rest day- bbq ing and drinking beer by the pond.
They knew this silly little objective was important to me so they possed up, tossed in the pads, and made the bumpy drive up to the Milks to support me on this one problem. I actually had a posse!
Long story short, I crushed it, and damn it felt good.
That's bouldering right there.
And true friendship.

It all counts Moose.
And Stahl- not so much honing the craft, just took getting back into climbing.
For me, back then, v3 at the Milks off a 3yr couch wasn't happening. The big deal for me on that boulder was not the difficulty or height this time, just getting the monkey off my back.
I will say I've honed my color coordination in the 15 years it took to return to that damn boulder :-)
Speaking of v3's at the Buttermilks...
Send of the day, this particular day, had to go to 11yr old Miles, for sticking the huge move to the lip on this tall v3 on the Get Carter boulder. It was a real stoker for the whole crew.
He and his dad RD are a veritable SWAT team of unbridled tenacity, enthusiasm, and humor, and they're damn good climbers.
After this, the DRL mob moved on to take over another boulder.

Hey Tom!
I took almost a whole month off after DRL Daze- had some tendon issues to heal.
It's new route season for me but there are heaps of boulders in this backcountry area and, amazingly, kids willing to hike pads in!
So some relief from bolting and projecting, and some of Tucson's best bouldering with psyched up, strong kids.
Can you imagine Sherpa-ing that kind of bullsh¡t load for 3+ miles in and still crushing v9???

More backcountry bouldering for me.
Yes, those first two shots are critical elements to the sesh...
Dead ringer for Justin Beiber, but he has climbing in his blood. v3 pockets
New problem "My Perogative" v3
Twin slopers on another new one "Don't Font" v2
I've admired this boulder for years, as it's close to the area I've been doing new routes.
I'm so stoked there are strong and motivated boulderers committing to making it reality.
The project is called "Minnie's Haberdashery".

Highballing at Fleming Beach
Actually Fleming Beach has, by far, the hardest (most sandbagged?) 5.10 boulder problems I've ever seen: slick rock and sick-hard moves, 20 feet off the solid concrete deck. With no crash pads and two artificial hips, I opted for a top rope. You'd have to be a lot stronger and bolder than me to onsight some of those puppies.

All right, Friend is back! and DMT posts! but where's Jefe? or Just in? or even Biotch? (how the hell do you write that name, anyways?)
Today after work, seshing alone. First vid is also an arete. OK, it's V4 (mainly for the sit start), not V6. I'm using crash pads and I'm definitely more flab than buff. Plus my problem doesn't even have a name. But I'm telling you, it's pretty sweet. Maybe even almost in the same ballpark. Double A instead of Triple A.

An easier problem that came earlier in the session and looks pretty rad in the vid. Dog goes by at 1:09

Ok Gnome, you got post 420, much coveted, especially on a bouldering thread.
Here's last weekend's bounty.
Only found two problems on Saturday. Miles from the road, through acres stickabush and among a sea of choss and holdless eggs, I stumbled on this diamond in the rough.
My friend Julie on the second, and probably last, ascent of Firebush.
Day two yielded some nugs at a new spot my friend has named Gnarnia.
And of course the fall colors were going mental
Backcountry bouldering may be an esoteric pursuit
but dang, it scratches all the itches for me.
Good hikes
Ease of documentation
Chill time
Group stoke
And the feeling of the first ascent, even a miniature one, is unforgettable.

Yesterday and today, on the (very small) outcrops up the beach (it's all I have, but I have them to myself) about 20 minutes walk from the house along the beach.
Old photos (last year, as I have nobody to take pix of me bouldering). Depending on the tide and the way it deposits the sand, these outcrops can be 2-3 higher (or lower).
There is no rock in Wexford except Rocklands on the outskirts of town. A small crag (understatement) with a gorse approach and some stinging nettle but no poison ivy/oak. About 60 feet in height (if that), rock is okay but... it ain't Yosemite.

I'm waiting with bells on, Dr. Jefe. Meanwhile here's a couple old videos from Mariano's vault to move things along to the next page. They are not me in a recent bouldering sesh, but they show some historic local action. The first one is a kid from Balcarce, Christian "Segu" Segura, doing his first V8 (this problem was first climbed a few years earlier by another guy from Buenos Aires). Segu learned to climb in my home gym while I was laid up from hip problems. He recently put up a V13 on La Barrosa (one of three, I think) and has become one of the few Argentines (personally I know of only three other guys) to send that grade.
The next video is Fernando Cicconi climbing La Barrosa's second V11 (Mariano was mistaken, it was not a second ascent and the first V11 followed a different line out the roof). Later, Cicconi did La Barrosa's first V12.

More quality stuff. Bliss arête was the first climb I ever got on in California, right after a few weeks at Joes. Stellar for sure. No flash, no send, just falling at the top, tired, with holes in my baby skin. The crisp granite and technically demanding climbing there made for a humbling day after feeling like a hero on the cushy sandstone grades.

Justin- Some holdless scoop at a locals spot way out in the Tablelands.
Really nice little place- like a mix of the catacombs and happies.
Unfortunately, it was all fun in the sun out there with the kiddos and dogs....
Then a seemingly casual fall resulted in a badly broken ankle and
a long carry-out to an ambulance.
Our friend is a nurse and she's a total champ, and our team mobilized quickly and efficiently to get her and the kids out.
We had to hike back out for pads and all the other crap we left.
She's doing well- two pins later.
BIG props to D2R2 and TomWoods(the only other two derels dumb enuf to check supertapas) for the carry/evac.
All those safety meetings paid off ;-)

Today or tomorrow should be the last sesh for six or seven weeks. The plan is to spend summer break climbing bigger stuff with a rope and partner Joe Cupps. Meanwhile, yet another video of an easy (but fun and exciting) problem from last Monday afternoon:

Heck yeah Yanqui.
I'm glad you post to this thread.
I'm pretty disenchanted with the ol taco and this has been the only thread I look for.
Anyway....
You know, after being on the road for a bit and climbing at world class areas,
it's really nice to be home and realize how good we have it.
Sure, the hike is longer than the Milks or JTree,
the problems not as concentrated, and not Bard or Bachar classics.
But you know what?
It's pretty f ucking good. We get the sense of discovery, it's not all stepped on, and you don't come around the corner to find a grip of OC urban boulderers or 15 stinky Colorado dudes and their girlfriends posted up below your problem.
This stuff can hold its own and would be classic anywhere
even smack dab in the middle of the Buttermilks.
Keep posting dudes. It's the only reason I check ST!

I'll try hard, but only a few times :-)
But this things goin' down. It's perfect.
A classic Bob Murray line, roadside, great view, not too tall, good LZ...a perfect proj I can work myself.
My tips are going to suffer, though.

Now that I've been home for a bit I've been focusing mostly on our backcountry spot- the place I rope climb in the summer. It's at 8000+ ft and the roads we use to access are closed for winter. So the hike's a bit further, and partially snowy and icy. But once we're on the south facing slope, the conditions are just perfect.
In the Tucson climbing community, most people are locked in with their partners. I don't have a partner for routes so it's been nice to latch in with a motivated group of young crushers. Not your average boulderers, I guess, amped to hike six miles through the snow with pads.
But the payoff is worth it.
Yesterday evening:
And when time or circumstances don't allow-
I've taken on a project. Nice to have something I can work alone.

Time for another photo dump I guess :/)
No offense, but carabiner brakes and Trump don't interest me much :-)
I made progress on my pj- it's hard for me, and I only have about 7 tries in me before my skin is toast.
Here's one of the warmups.
Had a great day in the backcountry in between these back to back storms.
But this next one will probably shut things down for a while. 3ft of snow expected.
Here's some pics of the problems on a boulder I found.
I put a bunch of time in clearing the base and top of deadfall.
The rock required zero cleaning though! So good, and stoked to have a collection of proud easier problems in this zone.
I named it the Creepshow.
Funny though, my crew of grommets is too young to get the names/references- they just think I'm a freak :-)
I See Monsters
Blue Velvet
Naked Lunch
Creepshow
Cryptkeeper
Once those were done, it was time to fill in the blanks on some of the surrounding...less proud boulders, just cuz they're there :-)
Sometimes even a small stone can be rad, especially when there are basically no holds on the thing, except for a few, just enough to make a line go.
I actually love this heinous little 3 move wonder. Super sharp sh¡tty holds and no feet.
It's kind of an old school problem.
Kinda dorky but believe it or not, it's 12a lol!
ARE YOU SICK OF ALL THIS WANNA BE CLIMBING YET
AND JUST DYING TO ARGUE ABOUT TRUMP?
Fine, split :-)
It's raining and I'm jacked up on the hippie speedball and have some more
lame spraydown bullsh¡t to post :-)
Why not? :-)
The Old Canadian alpinist can dis it all he wants- call it a fad, say it's not really climbing...
I say whatevz brah!!!
With quick windows between storms, I've been getting out to the low elevation stones-
This is where I was first introduced to climbing, back before there was a gym in Tucson.
It's an old school Bob Murray spot, and where Tucson climbers used to practice(on tr) for, you know...real climbing :-)
It's a short drive from my house, a great place to circuit, and an epic sunset spot.
Ok one last blast-
Truly my "most recent bouldering sesh"...
from yesterday, at another desert spot, before the weather turned.
The Rails at sunset
After all this practice I think I'm ready to try some real climbing :-)

I had to take a break from the snow...
and wondering who popularized the carabiner brake rappel, and justifying buying 3500.00 worth of hexes from cosmic, and trying to convert the brainwashed cheeto eaters....
So I went to Hueco.
The whole time I was there I was missing dudes like Bannister and Jenkins and their use of quotation marks when describing anyone else's preferred style of "climbing".
Bannister would definitely have a conniption if he knew the boulderer's camp is run by,
GASP! the American Alpine Club. Nooooooooooooo!
Yes. They recognize bouldering as "climbing".
Ok enough sh¡t talking about those kooks :-)
I hadn't been to Hueco Tanks since 1996 or 7 and was curious and nervous about how all the regulations would affect the experience.
For those of you who don't know, there is a reservation system limiting the number of visitors each day. In addition, only one of the four mountains is "self guided", the others requiring a guide and tour. It all costs money.
Camping, too, has changed. Gone are the days of the wild derelict Mecca of Pete's.
Camping is still available in the park but the best option is now the Hueco Rock Ranch.
This is the compound that Todd Skinner built for himself and the cool kids back in the day.
He bailed when red tape took over Hueco. It has since been purchased by the Access Fund and now run by the AAC.
Rooms for rent or dirt to sleep on, with an international crowd, and all kinds of amenities.
https://americanalpineclub.org/hueco-rock-ranch/
We had rezzies for North Mountain. I checked in, paid my 7 bucks, watched the mandatory orientation video, and was ready to climb, but waiting for more red tape and hassles.
The moment I stepped off the ground I was reminded that this is some of the best rock for climbing in the world!
And certainly worth the hurdles to have the opportunity to visit again after so many years.
We saw very few other humans in our wanderings.
Here's two days worth of mammary lane sh¡t from last weekend.
"Mammoth Rub"
Science supports the theory
that these were actually rubbing rocks for Wooly Mammoth 20K years ago.
News had spread of a new round of "soft closures"
to evaluate rock art in many sectors.
So we went on a Last Ascent Tour.
During our L.A.T our friend got stung by a bee on the tip of his tongue!
F uckin bee was in the bag of Honeybear cookies!
We removed the stinger, he was fine!
Great birding fyi
Hueco is a super fun and special place.
A lot has changed but it is still some of the best climbing in the world.

drljefe, the texture is pretty darn good; rough that any of our local sandstone, but I don't get sore for ne'er skn unless I really work at it. The cracks tend to be fairly gnarlyas far as the texture/ bottoming ratio. One really good feature is that unllke any of the local sandstones, it drys out almost right away!

Well, my four month bouldering cruise is coming to an end,
and I sure as hell was not gonna spend my last week of freedom sitting at home with anxiety and a bum tendon.
So I headed up to Prescott to test out the finger. At the very least I'd get to sleep outside and wander around some of my favorite places.
Prescott is where I really developed as a climber and Groom Creek is where I found my lifelong love of bouldering. It's such a great boulder garden- tight grained granite, heavily concentrated, and a long and rich heritage.
I realized pretty quickly that my finger was not ready, so I mainly just palled around with my new friend Paul. He's exactly half my age, and a true lover of Groom Creek, so it was cool for both of us.
He digs the history and I get stoked seeing how strong the new gen is. I don't really think of myself as old school, but to these kids me and my crew were like the stonemasters or something. They're envious of me being there at a time when plums were for the picking, but I try to tell them that the golden age is now. It never stops, especially with their skills. New hard problems are still being found, and Last Great Problems are being sent.
The continuum in bouldering, and of an area, is super cool and it's rad to see it played out in a place I love so much.
One day out it was me: 46 w/FAs of established classics, Paul: 23, local, and current double digit FAist, and Sam: 16, strong as f uck and crushing through all the classics. Super cool to be out with these guys, even if it made me feel older and weaker than I am!
Here are a few views of Charles in Charge, a classic first done by my friend, seconded and named by me, considered a classic now.
From 1995
I ran into some students that I'd met in JTree last year and turned them on to a few good ones.
Prescott is surrounded by millions of acres of NF and tons of rock.
So we spent one day exploring.
Man, if we'd had Google Earth back in the day!!!!
Unfortunately that ^^^^ was my las climbing for a while.
On the descent I nearly ripped a few fingers from my hand, including the already injured one.
That's what I get for butt scooting down a few teepee poles leaned up against the rock.
Gore warning
Oh well.
It was nice to get some firsts, repeat some classics, and make some friends.
It's back to work for me now- good time to heal up and do a million sit-ups!
Peace!

Jefe-
I love the high desert/arid forest environment.
I don't like crowds which keeps me from J Tree, Trump has blown my Mexico scene for the time being and the mountains are under a thick blanket of snow.
How's the drive from Prescott to San Diego? How's the open space or undeveloped camping?

Contractor-
Prescott is maybe 4hrs from Josh.
It goes in and out of snow during the winter, there's heaps of camping, and it's very friendly towards seniors :-) .
Not really a destination climbing area, especially with Granite Mtn closed, but there is tons of bouldering and places like Sedona and Flag are close.
You could have a fun couple days at Groom Creek for sure.

Nice! I go to climbing "destinations" plenty that require loads of planning, gear and stess.
I'm looking for equal parts, camping, exploring, solitude and wrapping myself around a boulder or two would be icing.

Found this (maybe 20-year-old) video by Mariano showing the boulder I did day before yesterday. It gives a better angle of the action and was fun for me, so I'm posting it up. There are about probably about two-to-three hundred problems, like this one, on the hill behind my house, that I wind up doing a few times each year, cause they're not too hard and I like 'em so much.
Cheers to you jefe, and to anyone else out there who is seshing,

That photo appeared in the Climbers Club Journal in 1903. I'm almost that old, but not quite. I suspect the constructions on the left were for children playing in a natural playground that would appall those who pass judgment on playground safety these days. But there's no one around now to ask!

Other side of the valley. Took me several tries to find it using Voltaire Canyon road plus bushwhack. Now that I know where it is on the map it looks like Kings Canyon road gets you much closer and same elevation. i was surprised at how good the rock is.

It was definitely worth it even with the multiple tries just to get it out of my head. I think it would also be worth it just to climb now that i know the way. Also, it's pretty tall so you could have some fun with a rope too.

you could park at the elbow next to the creek or try the spur that gets you much closer if it is accessible. i tried coming down kings canyon from the top but there was a sign that says there is a closure due to rock slide at some point. not sure where though.

About those cracks: the consensus rating for the bottom one is V9 and it was first done a while back, although perhaps it's easier than V9 because we don't have a lot of experience with harder crack problems. The really sick looking line was my original futuristic dream-project. I stumbled on it more than 2 decades ago, when my wife and I were the only ones bouldering in these parts. I deemed it "the V-15" boulder. It has a lot of history and is still a project (obviously way out of my league now), but the kids are getting pretty close. It also seems I pretty much nailed the grade. There are two, bomber one-finger locks (classic, deep monodoigts in the crack) past the top of the photo (with long, powerful reaches between) followed by a couple of (more or less) usable holds to the lip. Everyone worries about losing a finger on monodoigts!
