A better thing to me than free soloing the Nose.
Would be, to be, standing next to Billie and seeing his face when all these people come together and Cheers his name..
He prolly would blow it off at first. But I'm sure it's the only time I would ever see him jerk a tear.

It is somewhat to totally catered and all that and this list is sort of a headcount for the food and drink... but, the Bloot would never want anyone carrying beer denied entry to anything in his honor, or anyones honor for that matter. Email us closer to the event to see how you can help out. You've got my info I think. Cheers!

I have a feeling that Blitz would appreciate a celebration of someone's life, anyone's life, much less his own. We can all help to celebrate his and anyone else who has met him, has not met him or may have met him at any point.
The dude was having fun at every point I met him.
It was he that reminded me that we had climbed in the late '70's. I checked the records and he was right we had hooked up 30 years PREVIOUSLY.

Wow, you guys are all so great! Cole, please bring your projector as a back-up, can't be too prepared right?
Ron, you are on-duty as a prepper. Bring whoever you can to get the GordoRanch ready for the masses. If the crew finishes early.... go play or start drinking. Friday prepping would be great if possible but I'm sure with the right people you could pull it off by 3pm Saturday too. Sofcookay is on to help too, along with BlueBlocker and F10.
Thanks Sullly, that's sweet but it's the SuperTaco community at large that makes all this stuff happen. Pretty neat to be a part of it.
Cragman, that's fantastic!!! No need to pass it off southlanders. Maybe coordinate with Marty Lewis. He and Sharon are headed down as is FishFinder, Karen Roseme and hopefully Chez. Between that crew we can get it down the east side and back up to you no problem. THANKS!!!

Hey all, Billy's Memorial Service is November 9th and we hope to see you all at the celebration. If you plan on attending please RSVP to the "event" or contact me so we can get a handle on food/beverage needs.
For the Memorial Slideshow we are looking for photos with Billy IN THEM. If at all possible please prepare the photos by indicating who's in the shot & where is the photo was taken. That way all Russ will need to do is lob them into the slideshow. Worst case, we still want your photos......but please list on the email and/or the .jpg pertinent info.
Many of you already have photos posted here on ST. For ease, quality resolution & Russ's time on this project please submit any pictures with Blitzo in them directly to either me or Russ. If you don't have our email address' shoot us a PM.
Oh yeah, the sooner the better as this project will take a bit of effort to put together as it's coming from so many sources.
Thanks!

We are still looking for photos of Blitzo. If you have them, please get with me or Russ to send them either electronically or if you have multiples perhaps send us a disk. If possible include any details about the photo or better yet - imprint details on the "slide" so all we need to do is add it to the show. Ideally, if you have good shots can you get on this sooner vs. later as they will be shown on the slideshow during the memorial.
Also, those of you who would like to help with the Memorial.... we need the following items and volunteers.
Pre-Memorial preppers for the Gordon Ranch (11/8pm and 11/9 am)
Post-Memorial cleaners and haulers of trash (11/10am)
Christmas lights, electrical cords and other lighting for venue
Large Trash cans
Tables & Chairs for food and people to sit eat and enjoy conversation

Todd and I both guessed 150 people two months back when still in planning stages; I believe we'll be close to that. I'm probably going to order some more Beer & Food just in case.
If you enjoyed Blitzo either in person, virtually or his photography and want to share in a wonderful send off then please do come and join us for his Memorial.
It will be a grand get together of friends, his sister Marta & husband, story telling and music! Unfortunately, Billy's twin brothers will not be able to attend.
Blitzo's sister Martha is generously covering the expense of the event so we don't need anything on that end. I think I can speak for her in amazement and gratitude for all the generosity the Super Topo community did for Billy during his fight.
If you're willing to contribute some time to prepare the Gordon Ranch in clean up, lights and overall set up that's great. Or, seems we've got a good crew for that now, better yet may be be to hang back on Sunday for post-party clean up.

Out of the country that weekend (being insufferable on public forum). Damnit, I knew Blitzo only online from here and Todd's jtree forum. Was he droll or wry? Ah, he was something else.
One exchange I'll never forget, as it highlighted my naivete about most things criminal, was when he declared he was going on a government sponsored vacation. I replied, "have a good trip", or something to that effect, believing he really was going on vacation. Vacation from what job? should have been my first and only clue In reality, he was going to log 3 months in the slammer for some peccadillo. Cheers Blitzo.

Thanks for all the suggestions! - hate to impose on the Gordons with so many of their close friends coming and assuming they will be spending the night already.
Probably go with The Pit or Dry Lakebed but we'll leave our options open and just party right into the dirt (somewhere). LOL!

Dr. F: You can camp at Todd's for the Night
Get there early for better parking spots
Dr. F, like many great libs before him, is being somewhat overgenerous with a resource that he does not own.
Todd is too nice to say it, but...
Ideally revelers should look into camping somewhere other than Todd and Andreas. There will probably be about 200 people attending, partying, and bugging the neighbors at this event. No way the venue, ie: Todds house, yard and the surrounding public streets, can take a ton of campers too. Check the links above for alternatives.
If you are really stuck, email me and I'll toss you some other ideas.

You can check it out on your next trip into town. Super YUMMM! Total thread drift but we already loaded some empty propane tanks into the truck today in the event we decide to get a taco....ummm, I mean get propane refills :}
Back on topic, thanks to ATS for the suggestion. He fancies himself a taco aficionado and made the recommendation. Talk about on the mark! Memorial-goers are going to enjoy the snacks and our friend Blitzo would have really enjoyed this. He loved Mexican food, I'm sad he didn't get to try this place.
Big thanks to sister Martha and so looking forward to visiting with part of the Serniuk clan.

Nope, that's not the one. It's in the same mini mall. But, that place has a mean carne asada. They'll sell it to you raw, or cook it for you. Really decent little market.
The Panda Chinese restaurant next door is good too. They stir fry a great panda chow mein...

Sooze and Google street view update:
That is the place. Taco shop is in the back of the market. There is also a taco joint (Algobertos?) down left in the same mall.
If you go around back on Google street view you can see two dudes and a dog eatin' tacos!
Here they are, enjoying some Night Train and tacos...

Thread drift'in cause you made me hungry.
Kasa is Awesome! They provided the spread for my baby shower back in 06'.
Killer marinated carne asada for only 3.99 lb. Great prices on fresh veggies. And many things on the shelf you can't find anywhere else. AND they carry Victoria beer! Yum
I took Blitzo there a couple times and we'd get like 3-4 lbs of the carne asada and BBQ up tacos for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Then jus sit around and talk about go'in climbing.
Sure fuc'in miss that nOOb..

Hey there say....
I need you guys to send me more pics of Blitzo. Not pics he took of you, but pics you took of him. I'm working (well not quite yet) on a slideshow for BlitzoPalooza and need anything you can send over. Bigger files are better, any format, and label them as to where and when and all that.
Send them to RussWalling then the dreaded AT gmail.com
Let's go with this... sooner rather than later. For those that have sent some, Thanks! There have been some great shots rolling in the last couple of weeks.

You probably took the pic n00b!
Oh... sorting all these pics that are coming in and attributing them is going to quite a chore. The chances are better than good that your pic may show up in the slideshow yet not list you as a the photographer. If this is a problem for you, contact me. Also, some of the pics will be cropped and or adjusted to what I think is good. If this is going to be a problem, you will need to contact me too. I will not use your pic for any halibut manipulations.
For example, here is pic that I liked but needed some work: It has been cropped, color adjusted, shadow detailed, burned, dodged, cloned and sharpened. I like this pic!

James et al: higher rez is always better. I don't care about the format so much, just lots of pixels.
Stuff in the 1 -2 meg range should be pretty good.
Thanks!

Aw, man. I've been away for a while and my initial reaction is, WTF happend!??!
I don't really need to know right now. We have a man down. A dude I never met, but always liked.
He seemed to me to be a gentle giant. A kind man who loved climbing, photography, and beer. What's not to love about a dude like that?
I will try to make it. I may bring my wife and son, but I gotta work things out. Don't put me down as a definite yet. Todd, do you really have enough room for all these campers? I may just try to sleep in the park.
God bless ya, Blitzo, you were one of a kind, brother.

"My head was tricked again today...
Pulled up next to a Maroon Subaru and for a split second was excited that Blitzo was there...
One of those fleeting moments of confusion..."
That happens to me all the time when I see a Maroon Subaru. In addition moments of extreme sadness - typically generated by a photo I haven't seen before or a comment that someone makes. Yesterday it was Bluering's "man down" and "gentle giant" that even now re-typing makes me tear up.
I miss our friend, it will be bittersweet to send him off with a tribute party and memorial one that I know would give him great pride & pleasure. His friendship and overall presence in our life is sorrowfully missed.

Thinking this afternoon about Blitzo, crazy stuff and time in J. Tree along with early on fun when I first discovered Super Topo.
There are some absolutely WONDERFUL pics of Billy on these two threads, Sooze and Russ. I had forgotten about them til today. The Threads are, "The Game was 8 Ball" and "Back!!! 9 Ball...(OT TR)...
Bless you, Billy, out there in the Invisible World. You were one of few that produced in me a sense of humor. Love to you as yo soar, Dude. Peace and Joy Billie.

Looks like I'm not not going to make it. It's a big logistics thing with my Kindergartner. That, and if I go down to Josh to pay tribute to Blitzo, I gotta climb. And that's not feasible.
Meh, I'm bummed. Sooze, take me off the maybe list...
But Dirt Claud is a cool guy if you all get to meet him, good dude!

Blitzo Memorial Schedule
I know that a lot of you are traveling from great distance to join in the Celebration of Billy's life and his Memorial. With that in mind, please reference the schedule below and plan your travels & day accordingly. Also as a note, the time change is the weekend prior - so nightfall is upon us early around 4:45pm.
3pm ----- Food, Beverages & Mingling Begins
5pm ----- Bluegrass Music preformed by Erick Kramer Web
6pm ----- Memorial Service with story telling, memories and thoughts of our friend Blitzo
7:30pm -- Trio Jam Music preformed by Kelly Corbin, Andy Gorrill & Dennis McDade
9pm ----- Cactus Pricks plays with Big Al Bartlett, Dan Zacks, Donnie Reid & Mike (Mike's Bikes)
I know a lot of you truly cared for Blitzo and his passing is a great loss to our community. We encourage those attending the Memorial to arrive early, grab a plate of Food & Cold Beer and available for the 6pm service. Please don't be shy with your stories, we want to hear your thoughts and memories and share them with the group. I'm certain the memories will be choked with good humor and hopefully will bring more smiles than tears. The service will be casual, come up and speak on the Mic to the group then pass off to another loving friend.
Party to follow with more beer and tons of great local music. Thanks everyone for helping to put this Memorial together. The gathering of friends is something Blitzo always appreciated, let's do him proud.

hey there say, all...
i have a painting of blitzo, that i want to send... russ and sooze can present it to whoever the gift would best go to ...
but, i can't mail it... :( i've got five bucks left and i am trying to ask a two folks, nearby where i live... but,
if they can't help, i need a backup ready...
or i can't get this there in time to you all...
if anyone wants to volunteer to pay postage, please let me know... it is acrylic, as i had not time for the oil kind...
i can post it tomorrow, as i am still touching it up...
it is a faster work and not full of layers, but is still nice...
i'd have to have a paypal in for monday, or it'd not clear in time to mail it and as it is, i may have to do TWO day mail, which might be a bit more...
*these usually mail anywhere from 12-14... and about 18 for two day mail... sorry, i did not plan this right, money-wise, this time... or paint wise, but i had company...
just email me, if you want to help get this there... :)

Neebs, we'll cover it. I can't find your PayPal address in my PayPal history and believe you changed emails lately. Send me your new email addy and we'll get you taken care of via PayPal. As for mailing, Parcel Post or Priority Mail will be more than fast enough no need to second day air.... the Memorial isn't until the 9th.
More gifts for our Blitzo, you've already done soo much for him. You made him and his friends feel special. Thank you.

hey there say, sooze...
just sent you an email... okay, will try for the one that is best... regular, if the paypal goes through fast, but it usually takes 3 days...
and regular mail tells me, up to 7 days for it to get there...
check my email, however, this is acrylic and i CAN send it without a frame,
so THAT will make it go cheaper, too, if i need to send it faster... :)
i put an over amount, for you to send and i can send back some, if it only takes the 14.00 :)
HERE is the painting...
you and russ WILL know, from gut-feeling where this will best go, and to whomever... :)
edit:
yeah, the face LIT up better, with the flash...
whoever it is for, can always put a small LIGHT above the frame, etc...
edit again:
YES, to whoever will be the recipients--FOR SURE you WILL NEED SOME kind of a SMALL LONG AREA light, to shine on the painting, either from above? or from an angle...if the painting is near a corner area, A nearby angle light seems to SHINE on it, will work good...
but--i couldn't risk ruining it, :O

Bands are set, potties to be delivered, food is ordered, beer is brewed...............
Russ is still compiling photos of Blitzo - if you have some which we can add to the slideshow please send high resolution shots to me or Russ at your earliest convenience.
Dinner, Beer, Water is covered. I may pick up some sodas and such too if people actually drink that stuff.
We don't have any desserts - if someone would like to bring cookies, brownies or something like that I'm sure the masses would love a little something sweet after the Mexican cuisine. Please bring in disposal containers and include serving utensils. Not necessary, but might be a nice touch. Blitzo loved his desserts!

Ok, we are getting close to the event.
A few points:
This is a MEMORIAL and a party. The MEMORIAL portion will be taking place in the late afternoon/early evening, approximately from 3pm to 7pm. This is the catered part of the evening, and is geared more around friends, family, and people on the RSVP list.
The food and drink was ordered a while ago and was for a fairly firm number of people, thus the RSVP list. With the ever swelling guest list and random "I'll be there" guys, those resources are going to be stretched thin. So, if you are not real big on the memorial part, did not know Blitzo, or just want to party, please show up around 7pm. It might also be a good idea to bring some communal beer to share.
If you are looking for something to bring to help out, bring dessert type things, finger foods, bags of chips, more beer, and then more beer. There will be a few giant ice chests where you can drop off the beers for everyone to enjoy. Everyone, and especially Blitzo, liked good beer. Share your favorite.
This weekend is also the FREE get into the National Park weekend. Campgrounds will be very busy. Know where you are going to bivy or at least have some sort of plan. Camping at Todds is a long tradition, but ideally you will have other arrangements.
This event is taking place in a neighborhood. Be neighborly. Be courteous. Don't get your car stuck in some dudes cactus garden at 2am. Be low key.
If you don't know how to get to Todds, email someone for directions.
Continue to watch this thread for updates.

Thanks Russ, Susan, Todd and everyone else involved for pulling this all together. Mo and I will be showing up to help on Saturday. I will be happy to bring some non-alcs for those who like beer (in the spirit of Blitzo) but don't want the buzz, and some dessert to share. Looks like there will be need of extra with that list as big as it is!

What were Blitzo's favorite deserts? If I can find one not too complex I'll be baking tomorrow.
H and Mo, When I was in Calistoga I discovered a nice red wind called Tractor Shed Red. You can buy it in the Calistoga Grocery Store. If either of you are able, can you get 4-6 bottles for me and the event. If not that's OK too. Pay you when I see ya Sat.
Looking forward to remembering a talented, fun person. Lynne

Memorial festivities start at 3pm with mingling, food and beer. An ongoing slideshow will be playing using photos submitted by friends and family throughout the evening.
6pm is the Memorial Service, if you'd like to speak to the group by telling stories of fun, adventure or paying your respects we will have an open mic available. Please be prompt and respectful of those speaking during the service as I suspect it will be crowded and possibly difficult to hear. Thanks guys, see you Saturday.

Thanks Wendell, I've had a few others drop out too which have been adjusted on the list above and replaced with other RSVP'rs.
Things are moving forward. Potta Potties delivered tomorrow Todd (not sure when). Preppers showing up for Todd on Friday & Saturday. I'll swing by some tables, lights and extension cords.
Lovely weather, just the sort of days that Blitzo really loved. With the sun lower, the magic hour has been longer - makes me think of all his wonderful photography.

I get sites in full campgrounds in Josh all the time. Park the car, get out and walk around. If you see someone hook the bikes onto the back of the RV, inquire. I can't count the times I've got sites on a Sat. morning by walking around and observing the scene.
Conversely, I've been out there packing up my stuff while cars full of climbers looking for a site go blasting by...
Wow, I only new Blitzo in a passing "Hey, what's up" kind of way. but looking at that guest list really makes me want to be there. Unfortunately life has other plans in store for me...

Campground update: Hidden Valley was probably full today, and Ryan may have been. Indian Cove is completely booked for the weekend. Early in the day Friday there should be plenty of sites at Jumbo, Belle, and White Tank. I know it's not as convenient, but it's a place to stay. All of the entrances and visitor centers also have maps to the BLM off Sunfair.
Veteran's Day Free Weekend is Sunday - Monday (not our choice). Anyone coming in Friday will need a pass or have to pay the entrance fee (sorry!)
I can't make it to the Memorial, but my thoughts and prayers are with all of Blitzo's loved ones. What a great tribute!

Free park entry is actually Saturday through Monday. And you're right about the campsites being full except for the outlier areas. Plenty of cheap motels in YV too.
We'll see you in the morning H. We were headed to Echo Rock and will grab breakfast at the cafe by the turn off in case you're there first.

Mimi is correct. I should have posted the DAYS, not just the dates. Saturday-Monday is FREE. As I said, NOT our choice. I know the other campgrounds are not preferred, but still an option. And just so everyone is aware, the entrance will be open late on Friday night, as usual, so we will have to collect fees. But we will be there to help people know what their options are for camping.
Zip, not possible to do an 'after-party' at my place this time, but I'll be there in spirit!

I went down to the fire station in joshua tree today, and got a burn permit for a campfire;.......so hopefully we can have a legal campfire;......if anyone has fire wood and can bring some, that would be cool...for I have little to none........it's not gonna be a Guy Falks bonfire or something you can see from skylab;...just a campfire to be outside under the stars.
So;...if you wish to bring stuff, it's
1) more beer,
2) snacks, desserts,and/or finger food
3) fire wood
I will be home friday and sat.
We do need set-up help. Setting up tables, tidying up yard, moving sh#t around, putting up X-mas light so the drunks don't fall down the stairs in the dark, cleaning up stuff inside, ....lots of stuff we need help on. I've tried to get organized......I'm getting there......
The weather is fantastic;.....it should be an awesome weekend....See you all soon, and those who wish to help w/the set up;....anytime on Friday or Sat AM would be awesome thanks....

Cynthia, thanks for updating us and clarifying the free weekend along with the kind words of our tribute.
Lots of love coming through emails, calls and offers to help. Super great bunch of people we have and know that Blitzo would be so proud.
Mimi, we got your voicemail, using this public response is we're crazy busy plus (me, not poor Russ) is trying to fit in a little climbing with friends that arrived earlier this week. We'll see you and Steve at the Memorial.
Ran into Locker today in Indian Cove. This is a bitter sweet weekend for us, the memorial of our friend - someone who is deeply missed and knowing he is gone forever saddens us greatly. Still yet a wonderful opportunity to gather with other friends so many of you who donated love, money and support during his fight. I believe people call it closure but we're still stuck on loss.

What a wonderfully eclectic community we are! It was so worth the drive to be with the tribe again. Thank you, Blitzo and your conspirators for helping to reaffirm just how lucky we are to have each other.
Mo and I had a blast climbing and reuniting with everyone. Looking forward to seeing y'all again hopefully soon rather than later. If your ever in the Norht Bay I hope you'll look us up.

It's not so much the love that I felt while at the Blitzo memorial that struck me so poignantly...
It was the amazing collection of such a high caliber of people that were in attendance that seemed to speak volumes about the man I was there to remember. That so many great people came together to help in life and comfort as much as possible was the best indication about the human behind the seldom seen "Blitzo" handle here on the topo.
I didn't know Billie long at all. Didn't even really feel like I had come to know the man enough to go to the first name basis which seemed to me what everyone else had with him, but that had more to do with my place in life than anything else.
The stories, the photos, and the atmosphere of the evening gave me warmth i hope will stay with me a long time.
You people are great.
Blitzo was great
This was an awesome send off for the awesome guy Blitzo was. Thank you so very much Billie.

That, my friends, was a good god damn party!!!! Blitzo would be proud!!!!!
I can only hope at my death, that 1/2 as many amazing people show up to celebrate my life...... The depth of knowledge, experience, adventure, camaraderie is to be commended.....
I too got lost in the desert last night.....Watched sunrise from the top of a large municipal water tank with good friends and Blitzo's spirit by our side....
Cheers to our amazing community!!!!!!!!!!!

Just watched the Blitzo link. All that Jaybro said and more.
A man's life. I talked with Billy, but I wish I would have taken the time to ask him more.... what he was thinking about, what was inside. At Stephanie's Thanksgiving party couple years ago Billy and I were wearing the exact same light teal blue/black down jacket. He came up to me and commented on it and asked if I used drugs. We started talking. Depths.
I have learned more. Billy taught me a ton without saying much, even tonight. tears, lynne.
Thanks for putting this incredible tribute to this man together.

Hey Folks,
Even though I only dropped by and took off early, Bill and I found it worth the trip x 100. Nice seeing all of you, especially my dear Locker. I've missed you! Now I have a bit of Blitzo with me... Would it be alright to take him on a kayak trip? Hiking back here in my hometown woods? It's not climbing but it sure has it's own beauty. I for sure will take him climbing in the South and on a few ice routes in Montana. I know he's probably been there already, but what the heck!
Oh and I was thinking of getting him carried about in a gay pride parade around here because when I first met him, he kept describing the gay pride parade in San Francisco with so much wonder and excitement. He was tripping on it, absolutely loved it. He loved people that walked their own beat. I thought if he somehow knew what I was up to, he would get a kick out of that too.
Hugs,
AFS

Todd, thanks again for a wonderful job hosting an amazing evening.
Even though Christina and I got in late, we had a great time getting to catch up with old friends - Harrison, Moe, Anastasia and RLF just to name a few. Was a blast to FINALLY meet Locker, Russ, Tucker and the one and only JL - wish I had more time to hear some stories from that group for sure.
Slept like a stone and woke up pleasantly late, hung out with RLF and Crew for a while and then headed out to Indian Cove to get some climbing in before heading home. Was a wonderful way to spend the weekend, and share the love with all of Blitzo's many friends, fans and fam.

hey there say, sooze, russ, and all...
oh my... i just saw the blitzo-memory-quilt hanging there and i started crying...
that was my gift to him, so that he would have it to hang on to for the rest of life, as he looked back--after getting well--at all the folks that loved him, and were in his corner... something he could hang onto, each night, after looking back at this whole awful ordeal...
and here... it did not turn out that way... :(
it was MEANT for him, to get it though...
i made it JUST IN TIME... and by that, you both know--JUST in the nic of time, TIME for him to see and know of all those that were posting there for him... (a few names may have gotten left out, as once i sewed it, i could NOT add any more, ... though i think i got a few in on the OTHER SIDE... )...
DID NOT know, it would end up as a memorial memory for all these folks,
instead of blitzo himself...
but--you all gave him the BEST and the best always goes to those that are
so loved by their buddies and families and acquaintances...
well, what we knit together here on this short earth life, is part of
full picture, later, for eternity, so--he will still cherish this
memory-marker, though--in different ways, than when first planned...
*say, a fitting note to this:
my sewing machine 'died' just after i finished it...
IF IT HAD, SOONER, blitzo would not have BEEN here,
to enjoy it... :O :O :O
well, i had my cry now...
for those that knew blitzo billy, i know you will cry a lot more,
and for quite some time, until 'things settle' the best that they can, for you...
god bless to bill's sister, seeing here, there, made me cry, also...
i have five brothers and i pray that i can nurture our lives, while
WE have time, as, we are all living in spread-outs spots...
thanks for sharing all the pics...
and wow--lynne has her NAME BACK!!!!
A NICE HONOR, for her husband's trail, that he left behind!
ps:
oh my... locker--lost in the desert! (will there be a movie, now?)
;)
*and--a sequel? just saw there was another one of you all, lost, :)
good thing todd's place, helped place you back, or, you could have gone in CIRCLES all night... ;)

It was great seeing many friends from the Taco Stand, and sadly missed many others who couldn't make it. The drive there pretty well did me in and I didn't last very long; I subsequently missed Vegasclimber & his Missus, as well as Anastasia. This was in reality a family gathering of the tribe. Many heartfelt thanks to Todd and Andrea for graciously providing the Gordon Ranchero one more time so we could all have our farewell to Blitzo.
It was a fantastic blast to hang out with locker, and with Jaybro too. As always was glad to hang with Ron Gomez, Dr.F., Steve, Sonya, Mimi, Russ, Sooze, Ed Hartouni, Cosmic, Jim Bridwell, Largo, and too many others to list here.
My tin of Billy's cremains will be going to City of Rocks for a final repose atop Window Rock next Spring.
Edit! I also forgot to add Mister E, Skip, Lynne, and my partner from 2011 Zip to the list above. My bad! Tucker and Tony Yeary, too.
My trip home took me 14 hours and 45 minutes (I arrived this morning at 0445 hours) to drive 1040 miles. I slept most of today, so...better late here than never.
Another Edit! How could I have left out Harrison, Mo, and Cragman; missed ya' Dean!

Thank you Taco members who attended Billy's Memorial, it was a beautiful night with phenomenal weather. Russ kept telling me how much Blitzo hated that sort of thing but I disagree. I believe Billy would be so humbled by the attention and really touched that so many took the time to say goodbye.
It was like watching a timeline of his life, seeing friends and hearing stories from decades ago. Seeing sister Martha, meeting his ex-wife Charleen (aka Big Red)…….. new and old friends alike joining together.
During his illness he was so touched by the donations and cards that came in. It was much like watching a child at Christmas opening the cards, packages and emails he was so jazzed! Not just when it was donations (I mean really, who doesn't like getting sudden cash especially when it's so needed) but the continuous post cards, phone calls and posts checking up on him. He was a special person, a good friend and you all did a great job of reminding him of such.
There are so many special notes but a few off my head include SteveW who kept sending cards, Nita, Jingy, Cragman, Zip, Neebee, Will, the agent, Locker……..gosh the list just goes on forever. It was not uncommon to go to our mailbox and have 2 or 3 cards sitting there waiting for Blitzo.
So, my friends this Memorial wasn't just to say goodbye to Billy but a gathering of a community, one that I couldn't be prouder to be a part of.
Huge thanks to Todd & Andrea for opening your home yet again. Big hugs to sister Martha & Mort for not only funding the bash but driving down to be a part of it. All the clean up crew, preppers pre & post. People like Ron Gomez, H, Maureen, Lynn, Blueblocker, Sonya, Chelesa………. I don't even know who all as I wasn't there to lend a hand. Terrific crew pulled it off without a hitch.
Grant, Rick, Annie, Chelsea Cashner, Karen Bailey, Stephanie, Locker, Billy Russell, Charleen, Donnie Reid, Alan Bartlett, Denise Brown, Sue Lacey,Wally Barker, & all the LONG time friends; it warms my heart to had seen you there. Billy would be amazed, I can see his goofy smile.
So thank you all again for truly being there during the struggle as well as raising a glass in memory. You'd never know looking at him walking down the street that he was the richest man around. Rich with humor, good nature and deep and forever friendships.
Good-bye Blitzo, you are and will be missed. It has been my honor to call you my friend.

A drive by post while at work...
I'm surprised I didn't see more of you guys out there - Leggs gave me the peace sign as she drove by with Drljefe near Jumbo Rocks, but I didn't recognize anyone else.
I was playing the uke - you guys should have stopped and verified that I wasn't parttimecommunist in person.
How on earth did you know that was me giving you the peace sign?! I ask because I had NO idea it was you, I was just giving out peace signs to fellow climbers!
Jefe told me it was you, but we had climbin' plans to get to.
Were you at the party? My memory is a little fuzzy from all the damned O'Douls I drank.
Todd, Andrea, Russ and Susan, et al, ... what a wonderful celebration of Life. Smiles in the heart.

Wow, a very rich man indeed, that Blitzo! Sorry to have missed the big to do, but I was previously committed to stomping around desert and rocks last weekend—doing stuff that was in the spirit of and dedicated to Blitzo: climbing, pictures, socializing, and beer!
That slide show celebration was superb. Thanks for putting it together, Russ. A very well spent and touching chunk of my morning yesterday.
If there are any of his ashes left, I'd be more than tickled and pleased to take them with me to Hong Kong and Bali next summer... a way to mark Blitzo's "trip" to Hong Kong and Nepal perhaps... that was one of my all time favorites. Bali would probably be my choice... not sure he ever went there, but it's definitely a place in which he would have reveled! Lemme know!
Cheers and good travels Blitzo!

It was a very nice weekend and a wonderful celebration of Blitzo's life. So many people I had hoped to meet but somehow didn't. Thanks to Russ, Susan, Todd any everyone else who planned and coordinated this event.
I was so impressed with Todd's compassion, passion and his generosity to share his home and his family for the gathering. Although I didn't manage to meet him either, I have mad respect. Thanks again.

It was awesome to meet jefe, phil bircheff, more of Sonja, Karen, more of the Roots, dirt claude who has been given the Chef Cape for ST events and cheers to him for his handmade tacos.
Also, Jude the artist and Ana, Ari and Dr. Bill when they arrived. Todd Battey shredded on the dance floor (watch out for his wing span, he could take yo out. :) ) Also Seth, and Leggs and Chelsey.
Fish got my name back...that was huge. Susan, a beautiful spirit as always inside and out.
SO cool to see Andrea Gordon also rockin' on the dance floor and enjoying the event. More than great to see Randy V. and his beautiful family. Friends from the past, Dee ee, Dr. F. and Cheers to Mari and Mike.
Rlf and Tucker yo Dudes the ones I will always love for giving me support during hard times. Beth and Steve my "kindred spirits." (See Anne of Green Gables, a book.)
ALWAYS enjoy the tail gate with Gomez and Jim B. Their mellow vibe and stories make every bouncing off the wall time spent with them great. :) Still getting schooled......
Locker, seems like we are on the same page. Dude, call me about your own health status. Dang, I have learned so much from yo all, grown cause of yo and am finding my place on the planet.
Mr. Gordon thanks for the shindig and every kind word and hug you give to the family. Smiles of your magnitude make a difference.
And as for all you no shows from the list.....you missed. For those I missed naming here, you are in my heart and prayers. Love to the Family and Blitzo, Billy, our Friend.

I must say:
This was one of the most peaceful, blessed and loving gathering of the tribe I have ever been to in my 23 years of various events.
Thank you all - everyone there - for your generosity of spirit and joyous celebration for a truly great spirit passing on.
I t was a gift to be there with you all. I have never felt such camaraderie in my many gatherings.
The love and care taken by the high desert climbing community and others towards Bill was exemplary, and so many people put so much into this whole process in the last year.
It leaves one baffled why we even argue with each other.
Thanks for that poignant reminder.

Boy, your buddy really liked those tacos Roots. I was telling him he may need a snow cone to rub his bum in the morning after all that guacamole sauce. Don't think I got to really meet you though. Did meet some other great people though. Mister E, Lynne, BluBlocr, Susan, 10b, Dee, PhilB. Many I did not get a chance to talk to, but at least said hi and was cool to be around so many climbing legends. Once again thanks for a great Memorial to everyone involved in the planning and execution, just got the Devils Tower pic in the mail yesterday, looking forward to making a cool frame for it. Mr Yamamoto was all smiles all night, very down to earth fellow indeed. Thanks for the props Lynne. Glad there were some mouths to feed later in the evening, guess that green salsa was a hit. :)

LOL! Yeah when he came over telling me about the hot sauce, I turned into a dad and cut him off. Told him he was going to be sorry later....and of course I was right.
In the morning while I was listening to complete silence (no birds singing), is when I heard the "her-her-hut-hut-yak" quite a few times. It made me smirk.

I gotta say, that was amazing. Susan and Russ, Blitzo's sister and Todd & wife ..epic work you guys!! I know I can speak for everyone when I say how thankful I am you put all that together. It's a lot of work and what an amazing turn out for our friend.
It was great to see so many of Blitzo's friends from all the ages of his life. I was able to meet so many of you I had spoken to outside of the taco and so many who donated to help Blitzo. Thank you for the support. It meant the world to him and to everyone who loved him.
As a military wife, I've been to too many funerals and memorials. But I have to say, I've never felt so much love and celebration and comraderie as I did at Blitzo's memorial.
You're an amazing group and I am humbled to have experienced this, sad and hard as it was. I feel thankful. I feel peace. I've learned a lot. And I am grateful to you all.
I promised Bill I'd take a bit of him to Alaska. We had talked about going there if he got better. He always wanted to see it. Mike and I will find a nice peak with a wildflower on top just for him.
Thank you folks. It's been an amazing journey.

I'm still thinking about this great celebration of a man's life as Jaybro says. The link to the slide show is wonderful. Bringing home all that was shared in love and loss and true beauty in our world.
It was so full, so many friends I couldn't connect with everyone individually! Now that's a good Irish style wake, in my thinking. I really wanted to see Sonya but didn't even see her there at all. But I DID see about a dozen jewelry pieces of hers around the various necks! That was cool.
Thank you everyone. godspeed the Blitz

Just a lurker here, a scrambler & hiker who happened to be leaving Joshua Tree just as y'all poured in. I saw a jeep coming off a dirt track late Thursday & just knew it was someone there for the memorial. "Blitzo people," I told my partner, "good people." And so you are.
Rob was doing all the driving back to Santa Cruz, so I was able to lift a glass in unison with many of you to honor your friend.
May you all prosper; and when the time comes, may you all be remembered with such warmth.
And yes, may the libations continue to pour.

that was one great memorial. so glad i could make it. it seemed like blitzo had touched everybody there in some funny personal way. still holding his ashes for a tuolumne pour.
great catching up with friends, and making more friends, especially you locker, i have not laughed that hard in a long time. i will always remember your line to that lady. "well, i would give you a ride home, expect that i am drunk, and i don't even have a car." fuking all time hysterical.
feeling it, ss

Edit: I remember you asked that we avoid Yosemite Valley with your ashes....

Yeah, a regular sh#t show complete with inept and pricey attorneys, federal prosecutors who were "allegedly" bedding the accuser, outright perjurers and a whole throng of uncorrupted legal system people who kept asking just why the Bloot was even in the system at all. He did his time, but was, and got, totally f*#ked over by the rigged system that is Yosemite justice.
Someday I'll tell ya all about it.

From an outsider who has been blitzed by the sweet, wild love that he evoked:
scatter Blitzo far & wide. We need what he brought. We need it everywhere.
Gusto to y'all,

Blitzo's Memorial Entry was all set up today for the Art Faire. His memorial poster will also be for sale. If anyone is interested in the poster, you can find it HERE.
It will be pretty cool to see his photograph on display. They also did a really nice article on Blitzo in the faire program. The JT National Park is doing a feature on him on their facebook page from what I understand as well, but I don't have the link for that yet.

I was intent on taking Billy to CO, but a super special opportunity presented itself this weekend. A friend invited me to explore thousands of privately held acres in a very special place here in So Cal. All the things I think Billy would have loved....private, unspoiled, unique, home of ancient Indians and all kinds of wild life. (I saw a small grey bobcat today.)
Peace to you, Billy, along with your family and incredible friends that still inhabit this planet and miss you very much. Lynne

The question is... Can I release some ashes at the beach? Oh, and should I do something unusual. I know he was a big people watcher and a kid at heart. May I leave a little of him at Disney Land?
Watchya think?
If not... I am also heading to Montana soon. I was going to a few ice climbing spots... A bit if not all will be released there.
P.S.
Oh yeah, I was also thinking the Gay Pride Parade in San Francisco since he LOVED his experiences during that. Like I said, he was a great people watcher. I was thinking of taking him to one of those and let one of my friend's who is participating march him around.

A mild desert winter has spring coming early to Joshua Tree. The desert is a carpet of green with budding flowers everywhere. Blitzo, who is often with me in spirt is on my mind even more with the beauty that is starting to emerge.
Today, near Hidden Valley I left a little bit of our friend at a sprouting Freckled Milvetch. A little Walter fertilizer and breaking the law in the process!
Spring flowers will not be the same without you my friend but I will try and bring you along for the viewing just the same.

Good Day, hard physical work, sitting down and watching the lavender and grey's of all hues sunset.
Blitzo slipped into the moment, sat down with me at the little table in front of my tiny casita and with his Blitzo copyrighted smile said, " Hey, let's have a beer." I only had an icy Pacifico with lime, but he said
it was OK.

Ron, Blitzo would be proud. I ordered you and Kelly a copy of the "Sacred Sage, How it Heals." When it arrives we will make the trek to the mountain and collect the gift and make it into gifts for our friends.
Peace to all our friends tonight that we talked about and wish them health and healing.
Cheers, lynnie
