The Giants won their seventh consecutive postseason elimination game and eighth postseason game overall, and it was no contest.
The Great Pumpkins of October do it again.
What must be the psyche of the teams that have to face the Giants?

Yeah the Bay Area is nicer than SoCal but I don't see the Giants hurdling both the Dodgers And The Angels.

The Nats are probably the real underrated team in the playoffs. I don't believe the G-Men can get through the Division series intact. The Cardinals are unbelievable in Post Season play, and will be a force to recon with.
In the AL, the Royals are a real dark horse with outstanding pitching, but my prognostication is the Orioles make it to the WS. Orioles vs. Nationals for the WS.

I already jinxed the A's by watching innings 7-9 of the wild card vs. the Royals (tried to save them by leaving where it was showing, but the damage had already been done), so I'm just going to stay away from supporting the Giants again until November.

Aside from the obvious physical and mental superiority of Giants fans, I have personal reasons for despising the Dodgers. First, when I worked in downtown LA and lived in Pasadena, I often could not leave the office until around 7:00 p.m. LA fans tend to root for their teams thick or thick, and if the Dodgers were doing well, summer time could make for some very long commutes. If the Dodgers did poorly, the commute went quicker.
THen there's the climbing-related reason. My main claimbing partner over the years, Tim Schiller, is a rabid Dodger fan. In the 1970's he used to carry a 3" X 3" X 1" transistor radio that seemed permanently tuned to KFI. One time around 1977, when we were doing a new route on Little Baldy (that approximates the line of "Wigged Out"), I was leading a traverse on the third pitch that went around the corner from Tim's sling belay. The start was on somewhat rotten rock and my only protection was a rather dubious knifeblade back around the corner with Tim. The climbing wasn't difficult, but the crumbly rock and the uncertainty of a new route had me on my toes. As I was getting ready to make a thought-provoking move, Tim shoulted to me "Hey John!" I assumed he was going to tell me that the knifeblade fell out, but no. Instead it was "Garvey just hit a home run. The Dodgers are ahead three-to-two!"
So much for an attentive belayer.

Editorial based on bias, brewed in Mariposa, and coming out like Golden Valley showers.
Giants lead 3-2, bottom of the eighth inning in the NLDS, hoping to win this and advance, perhaps to meet the f*#king Dodgers.
So I left the game a half hour ago, two-two tie, get home, and it’s a three-two runaway, based on performances by both teams’ bats in the lowest-scoring NLDS I’ve ever watched.
Why do I care?
I love the colors, black and orange, the same as my old school's, Merced HS.

If all goes well I will have satellite TV installed today, but baseball on the radio is still pretty good. Googling the current score with slow(over the months down load allotment) internet, sucks.
Go Giants!
Conventional has always been an antonym for Pence, so it should come as no surprise that one of the best catches of his Major League career was anything but on Tuesday night.
With one out and an 0-2 count in the top of the sixth, Jayson Werth hit a 91-mph fastball from Ryan Vogelsong to deep right field. Pence tracked back to his left and leapt into a chain-link portion of the fence, with his left arm extended into the padded section. Reminiscent of Michael Jordan, a fully-extended Pence somehow snagged the ball, tongue out. He then bounced off the wall, landed with a thud and the ball secure in his glove.
The catch robbed Werth of at least a double and helped preserve what was then a 2-1 San Francisco lead.
"I knew he hit it hard, and I was just like, 'I know that our park is big,' so I was trying to run back as hard as I could," Pence said. "Judging, when I looked at it, I was like, 'I'm going to have to go as hard as I can to make a jump and a stab.' Fortunately, I was able to get it."
Ha! Anyone think MJ when they watched that catch??

Don't get ahead of the course of events...the G-men still need to prevail over the Cards. That is going to be a lot tougher than beating the Nationals. The G-men and Cards always seem to beat the odds-makers' predictions, and are baseball "survivors." ESPN had a very interesting analysis revolving around managerial handling of bullpens, and the catchers calling the games; both Giants and Cardinals have superb catchers calling the games and providing leadership. Both teams have a recent tradition of winning when the chips are all down. The G-men shouldn't get too proud, since they only won on a wild pitch, allowing a runner to score.

They did that twice in the Giants/Nats game last night, but we only suffered through one of them. Even though the radio was about 45 seconds ahead of the TV, we switched off the TV sound, listened to our beloved team of broadcasters, and therefore knew when to pay attention (e.g., Pence's catch).
The real highlights were afterwards. As just one example: John Miller noted that whenever Kruke or Kipe threw out the ceremonial first pitch in the post season, the Giants won. He then went on to say "For the record, Will Clark threw out last night's ceremonial first pitch." After the Pirates play-in game, Miller said of Bumgarner "He spits in the face of danger," to which Krukow replied, "No he doesn't. He shoots snot rockets at it." FS1 was light years worse.

Yes, really like listening to the radio pair of Jon Miller and Duane Kuiper. Will be happy if the Gigantes make it to the World Series just so I can hear them call it. Eric Nadel was quite good when Texas was making it to the post season there a few years ago. Nothing stands out about the KC or Baltimore announcers, at least from what I've heard so far. Too bad the Dodgers tanked. Would be nice to hear Vinny do one more series before he checks out.

Pure luck? Surely fortune comes into play, but so do the tangible strengths of the Giants in a postseason environment that is different from the regular season. They win because of timely hitting, stout pitching and defense, an astute manager, Bruce Bochy, with great skill running a bullpen and a contact-hitting lineup that can win games without the home run.
Great pitching tonight by Bumgarner. 3-0 Giants Win

[quote]Reckless Driver A Royals fan liked to amuse himself by scaring every Yankees fan he saw strutting down the street in an obnoxious NY pinstripe shirt. He would swerve his van as if to hit them, then swerve back just missing them. One day while driving along, he saw a priest. He thought he would do a good deed, so he pulled over and asked the priest, "Where are you going, Father?" "I'm going to give Mass at St. Francis church, about two miles down the road," replied the priest. "Climb in, Father. I'll give you a lift!" The priest climbed into the passenger seat, and they continued down the road. Suddenly, the driver saw a Yankees fan walking down the road, and he instinctively swerved as if to hit him. But, as usual, he swerved back onto the road just in time. Even though he was certain that he had missed the guy, he still heard a loud THUD. not knowing where the noise came from, he glanced in his mirrors but still didn't see anything. He then remembered the priest, and he turned to the priest and said, "sorry Father, I almost hit that Yankees fan." "That's OK," replied the priest "I got him with the door."

I've been a diehard Giants fan since 1960 when my family moved to the the Avenues in SF. I remember after the debacle in Anaheim (effin rally monkey, give me a break) resigning to myself to the fact that I would go to my grave without seeing the Giants win a World Series, hey it's just baseball. That obviously worked out OK, though.
In contrast, I was never much of an American football fan and found it easy to root for the Seahawks against the Niners now that I'm living in Seattle (20+ years now). This pissed off my Bay Area friends royally, and I have to admit that I kind of liked rubbing it in that Marshawn Lynch is from Oakland and went to Cal.
Now, though there is some symmetry: Travis Ishikawa is from Federal Way, a suburb just south of Seattle(aka north of Tacoma).

This should be an interesting series. The Giants starting rotation doesn't stack up that well against the Royals. Good thing the long ball showed up again last night, they are likely going to need it.
More than anything, the Giants seem to know how to show up when it matters most. Despite not having the complete team (injuries, spotty pitching), they get it done.

Apparently Peavy has such poor eyesight without his contacts that he thought Ishikawa's HR bounced off the wall and was a ground rule double. Peavy damn near tackled Ishikawa trying to round 3rd and head for home so he would be credited with the HR.

back and forth games the whole way, lots of drama, good for the fans,
NLCS will probably prove to be better than the series,
expect KC to get blown out of the water,
bottom of the ninth homer to get to the series, nothing better,
WS parade in SF, 2010, cars honking, people screaming from BMW's, homeless guy yelling at the cars>"it's only a game!"
and he is right, but still fun,

Pitching wins ball games. Period.
For that reason alone, I predict the series will go to the Royals. Royals have Home Field advantage via the All Star Game victory. Bumgarner is obviously the G-men's big weapon, but he can pitch (realistically) in no more than 2 starts. Shields only started once in the ALCS and is fresher. This will go at least 6 games, and probably 7.

Home field advantage didn't help the Nats or the Cards. I agree pitching is the key to winning championships but managing is also important. I'll take Bochy and his battle-hardened Gigantes over Yost and his base stealing Royals any day.
Bovada has the Royals as slight betting odds favorites...more reason to favor the Giants.

UPDATE, 10:10 P.M.: Kansas City, Mo. – The immovable force was a 25-year-old mountain of a pitcher with iron nerves and an uncanny ability to quiet a hostile crowd in the biggest of games.
The unstoppable object was a spunky team that found a way to win every game it had played this October after it reached the postseason for the first time in 29 years.
When Game 1 of the 2014 World Series was over, and the scoreboard said 7-1 Giants, it also could have read, “Nerves of Iron 1, Spunk 0.”
Tuesday night’s game at Kauffman Stadium was no contest because Madison Bumgarner did what he always does on the road in the postseason. He became a left-handed stop sign for seven innings, holding the Royals to a seventh-inning Salvador Perez home run that, remarkably, produced the first World Series run that Bumgarner has allowed in three starts.
It also ended his record postseason road scoreless streak at 32 2/3 innings.
But it happened when the Giants had a 7-0 lead after they took it to James Shields for three first-inning runs, two on Hunter Pence’s first homer in more than a month.
“We wanted to get the momentum on our side as soon as possible with Madison on the mound and let him settle into his groove,” first baseman Brandon Belt said. “Fortunately we were able to do it early.”
And, by taking an early lead in the Series, the Giants have recent history squarely on their side. The Game 1 winner has captured 10 of the past 11 World Series.
The royal Bum

Well, I'm not surprised. the Giants rang their bell in Game 1. It could have gone 2 ways, KC could have continued to be demoralized or they rally. They rallied. And we're coming home. FYI, SRO tickets are going for more than 800. I'll be loitering around the park on Saturday.

Back up, back, back, back, back, back and just think...in 1973 or 4, when Oakland hosted the Also-Ran Dodgers, the tickets sold for only around thirty to forty dollars from a reputable ticket agent. I bought two, upper deck second baseline.
A game at the World Series is lifetime memories and much better if your home team is the winner.

Injured Lincecum may exit World Series just as he arrives
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2014/10/23/tim-lincec#m-world-series-injury/17760943/
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Tim Lincecum was the San Francisco Giants' nowhere man for nearly a month, on the roster but never budging from the bullpen as his mates rallied to win eight of 10 playoff games and reach yet another World Series.
Finally, in Game 2 Wednesday night at Kauffman Stadium, Lincecum got the call, and in a cruel twist of fate, may be exiting the World Series far more quickly than he entered.
That's a damn shame. I would've really enjoyed watching him pitch during this Series.
(seriously)

Yes the 3 Ps have to come through for the Gs tonight. Last night's loss ensured the Gigantes won't celebrate WS glory at AT&T. Vogy and the bullpen will have to bring it tonight and MadBum will have to work his stone cold magic one more time. If this series goes to game 7 it will be fascinating to see how Bochy manages whatever remaining pitching resources are left standing.

Apogee writes:
"This is truly some of the worst WS coverage I can imagine."
If it were up to me, the camera zoom lenses would be disabled.
I find no value at all in a tight shot of the pitcher's face. Or the manager's face.
I want to see how the infield's positioned, or where the outfielders are standing. Because that's an important part of how the game's played. But instead we're constantly shown a close-up picture looking straight into the pitcher's mouth or the batter's ear canal..
It's great that they have lenses long enough and mounts solid enough to zoom into some guy's nostril from 100 yards away, but just because you can do something doesn't mean you have to.

I think Peavy can give the Giants at least 5 strong on Teusday night. If so, Boche will have some good options from the pen to work with. If we can get to Ventura early, it could be season over for KC.
Upside is, our bats are alive and defense has been stellar. Can't say the same for Royally Blue right now.

As a Giants fan I want to remind people: They can take them with them!
As much as I want the Giants to win, this makes for a better Series, and boy whatever the outcome, I hope it's a good game tomorrow. Hudson is due some good luck. I would love to see Timmy pitch and win, but it's hard to imagine that Bumgarner will not be in it. As for the Royals: at least they aren't a force of evil, and I like the way they play ball.

Get a clue u simpletons. 10-0! Ya right!
The "fix" was in. 7 games means million$ $$$$$$
more in loot for 'THEM'.
So jealous I'm not a 'THEM'. Krist on a stick!
Cheapest sit down seat in nose-bleed sections is $475 in KC.
And $26,500 for a cushion seat sitting behind home plate per game.
Add it up. Kansas-City gangsters and CA gangsters got together
and made a deal-deal. For us!
Be suitably appreciative Wed night when the real game starts!
Go Giants! Go Royals! Go America! We all win!

"Mostly, the managers knew they wouldn’t have to use their best relievers in Game 6, and that is one of many reasons this Game 7 is shaping up to be an epic. The Royals have a rested Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland lurking in the bullpen. The Giants have starter Madison Bumgarner, who could finish one of the best postseasons ever with some relief dominance on two days rest. Bumgarner doesn’t just have the Royals’ number. He has their bank accounts and e-mail passwords, and he changes the code on their garage-door openers because it amuses him."
Heh!

Nice job, Giants. Fitting that Sandoval made the final catch- that guy deserves Series MVP almost as much as MadBum.

Unbelievable what we just witnessed. MadBum & Bochy headed for the HoF. That double play by Panik and Crawford in the bot of the 3rd was spectacular. Blanco & Perez almost flubbed it at the end. Meanwhile, back at Dodger Stadium...

Meanwhile, back at Dodger Stadium...
And so it goes the same in Atlanta; away that is. The Braves are abandoning this beautiful venue (built for the '96 Olympic Track and Field Games and converted into a ball field), because it is on the wrong side of town. So GA tax payers get to foot the bill for a new stadium north of Atlanta, where the rich folks be.

Hey the Giants are stinking up the joint, but I'm still hoping that they hop to another universe and go all the way. My consolation teams would be the Cubs, Jays, and I wouldn't even mind that NL West team from far south of SF, but I can't seem to type their name with out prefacing it with F*** the XXXers, so I just won't mention them.
I guess the As aren't going to make it, eh?

Go Giants!
By Ken Rosenthal @ken_rosenthal
Oct 6, 2016 at 1:52a ET
NEW YORK – I can see it now: Madison Bumgarner coming out of the bullpen at Wrigley Field in Game 5, stomping and snorting and staring the Cubs down.
Bumgarner pitched five scoreless innings of relief in Game 7 of the 2014 World Series, didn’t he? The Giants’ rotation actually is better now than it was then, so maybe this time he will be needed for, oh, only a three-inning save.
Yes, I’m getting ahead of myself, way ahead of myself. But the Giants are back, back after prevailing over the Mets Wednesday night in an electrifying National League Wild Card Game, 3-0. And it’s safe to assume that with their history (World Series titles in 2010, ’12 and ’14) and their rotation (Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija and Matt Moore in addition to Bumgarner), San Francisco is the team that the Cubs least wanted to play in a best-of-five.
The pressure won’t get to the Cubs – manager Joe Maddon is too good at diffusing the talk of 1908, the players are too confident to succumb to such nonsense. But with about a week left in the regular season, Cubs officials surveyed their potential Division Series opponents, one seemingly more vulnerable than the other, and decided, “Well, whatever happens, one of those clubs is going to get on a plane Wednesday night, celebrating their victory, forgetting all of their troubles along the way."
Bingo.
The Giants won five of their final six games to secure the second NL wild card, including the final three against a Dodgers club that already was pointing toward the postseason. But they had Bumgarner ready for the Mets, and Bumgarner in the postseason ... well, you’ve seen this act before.
Bumgarner’s complete-game shutout, his second in a wild-card game, lowered his road ERA in the postseason to an absurd 0.50. He has now gone 23 postseason innings without allowing a run, improving his career ERA in October to 1.94 – the third-lowest in history for a pitcher who has made at least 10 playoff starts.
Of course, Bumgarner got help in this game, help from a familiar Giants staple in October -- the unlikely hero. Say hello to Conor Gillaspie, a 2008 Giants draft pick whom the team traded in ‘13, then re-signed as a minor-league free agent in February -- and started at third base in the wild-card game only because of an injury to Eduardo Nunez.
Marco Scutaro, Cody Ross, Travis Ishikawa, Mike Morse ... oh, you’ve seen this act before, too. Gillaspie hit a three-run homer off Mets closer Jeurys Familia with one out in the ninth inning, just in time -- naturally -- for Giants manager Bruce Bochy to avoid pinch-hitting for Bumgarner.
So, can the Giants upset the Cubs? The odds are against Bochy, Bum and Co., considering that they won 87 games during the regular season to the Cubs’ 103 -- and that Bumgarner will not be available until Game 3 at AT&T Park, with Cueto and Samardzija likely to start the first two games at Wrigley against Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks, respectively.
“It’s going to be tough,” said right fielder Jay Bruce, who played frequently against the Cubs in the NL Central until the Mets acquired him from the Reds on Aug. 1. “They’re a good team. The Cubs are a great team.”
Bruce explained: “Anybody in the playoffs is a good team. The thing that sets the Cubs apart is that they have sluggers, but those sluggers also get on base a lot. If you catch a slugging team in the playoffs that doesn’t get on base and they go cold, then it’s like, ‘Uh-oh.’ The Cubs get on base and they slug. And their pitching is very good. They’re obviously the team to beat.”
The Giants know it, and rest assured, the Giants don’t care. Giants things, even-year things, are happening again. If you don’t believe me, just replay Wednesday night’s ninth inning, which began with the score still 0-0. And remember that Mets righty Noah Syndergaard was jaw-dropping in his dominance of the Giants in the first seven innings, striking out 10 while allowing just five baserunners.
The Giants celebrated Syndergaard’s removal by loading the bases against Mets setup man Addison Reed in the eighth, only to see Hunter Pence strike out. They began the ninth with another threat, a leadoff double by Brandon Crawford, prompting an immediate moment of truth. Bochy ordered his No. 6 hitter, Angel Pagan, to bunt, wanting to grab the lead before he would need to pinch-hit for Bumgarner.
Pagan, who had executed only one sacrifice since 2012, failed in his first attempt, failed again on his second and then -- after Bochy gave him the option of swinging away -- struck out. Joe Panik followed with a walk, bringing up Gillaspie for another moment of truth. Bochy would have had no choice but to hit for Bumgarner if Gillaspie had made the second out.
Not to worry: Gillaspie went deep on a 1-1 count.
“I was pretty excited that Syndergaard wasn’t in there -- he has some of the best stuff I’ve ever seen,” Gillaspie said. “As far as the home run, you know what? I’ll be honest with you, I couldn’t tell you where the pitch was at. Right now, I have no idea where it was. I just know it was up enough to swing at.”
Ah, but the story didn’t end there. Jarrett Parker was in the on-deck circle, ready to hit for Bumgarner. Bochy said he watched Parker high-five Gillaspie, then screamed at him to return to the dugout.
The Giants had the lead. Bumgarner was at 106 pitches. Bochy, after watching his bullpen crumble in the second half, wanted no one else to pitch the ninth.
Afterward, a reporter asked Bumgarner in the interview room why he was so successful in winner-take-all games. Bumgarner started to reply -- “I wish I had an answer for you. I don’t.” -- when Gillaspie interjected.
“He’s tough, that’s why. He’s a competitive, competitive guy at everything he does, and it shows not in baseball but anything in life. I mean, the guy will have a competition with anybody over anything. And those are the kind of guys you want on your club, there’s no doubt.”
The Giants have a team full of those guys, as we learned in 2010, ’12 and ‘14.
On to Chicago. On to the Cubs.
We are spoiled fans and loving it. Bummer for the rest of the MBL because the cockroaches are back and have infested the playoffs again. Now watch the critics and pundits eat doo-doo.

I think the Giants treated us in Fresno better than they're treating you greater Sac Town folks. Bumgarner, Posey and Gillaspie, among many others, came up through the Grizzlies. I'm not sure the Rivercats have quite the same roster of former players on the Giants yet.

The San Francisco Giants Play in Camp 4
A smog of campfire smoke clung to the trees. I could hear the crackling voice of a dispatcher as a ranger patrol car prowled along the campground toad. As the summer wore on, the tourist population continued to grow. The only unoccupied ground was the open slope that lay between the flats and the zone of boulders and trees above, where the climbers lived. Week by week the tourists crept up the slope, laying claim to new land, like homesteaders.
I watched one of them walking up the slope. He was wearing a San Francisco Giants baseball cap. After looking around and scuffing the ground with his foot, he shouted back to his family, “This will do. It’ll take some work.” He walked back down to the station wagon, which was pulling a big trailer. The wife and children got out, to lighten the load. He gunned the car up the slope, wheels spinning, dirt flying, and stopped fifty feet below us. He dug holes for the uphill tires of the trailer. The downhill side was propped up by several car jacks. Once the trailer was level, the family disappeared inside, it, and a rumbling generator started up.
“Christ,” Mike said. “Is that thing going to run all night?” Then we started hearing other sounds from the trailer.
“The count to Mays is three and two. Koufax looks in for the sign.”
“Do you hear that?” Mike said. “They come all the way up here to listen to a baseball game?” The heat and population pressure had put him in a cranky mood.
Mike had been in Camp 4 too long. He needed to get back to the North Cascades and camp on Sahale Arm, where it was fresh and clean. In every direction, there would be serrated peaks, sparkling with glaciers. The tent would be pitched in an alpine meadow, just above timberline. After a climb, he would brew a cup of tea and listen to the echoes from avalanches on Mount Johannesburg. Then he could slowly roll downhill in the heather, plucking tart, sweet blueberries that were far better than any others. This was Mike’s natural home. It was hard to be a poet in Camp 4.
“Ballcappers,” he snorted. “These ballcappers. Running around in their little caps that say Giants or Dodgers, as if there was any real connection between them and those players.”
“Well, at least when they’re at the game, they’re not up here,” I said.
“that’s true.” Mike shouted down at the trailer, “Go fill up the stadium. And stay there. And stuff your face with hot dogs.”
“Marichal kicks high. It’s a fastball to Roseboro,” the trailer replied.
We sat there in our little patch of shade and waited for the sun to go down behind the wall of the Three Brothers.
“So what are we going to climb tomorrow?” Steve asked.
“Ballcappers,” he snorted. “These ballcappers. Running around in their little caps that say Giants or Dodgers, as if there was any real connection between them and those players.”
