Mariners and King Felix finally lost on opening day after having won the opener the last 10 years. It's all about change this year, so that's good. They then won the next two games against the Rangers in grand fashion. Looking good so far (except for Felix who is starting to go down the Dennis Rodman road of personal grooming). Home opener tomorrow.

Jessica Ofelia Mendoza - (born November 11, 1980) is an American former softball player and broadcaster. At Stanford University, Mendoza was a four-time First Team All-American for the Stanford Cardinal from 1999–2002, and was a member of the United States women's national softball team from 2004–2010. She played professionally in National Pro Fastpitch. Mendoza owns numerous Cardinal records.[1][2][3] She is currently a member of the broadcast team for ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball.
looks like the Giants will be into the Dodger bullpen fairly early although Maeda isn't pitching poorly, he's just throwing alot of pitches
EDIT: I spoke too soon. He got it together to go 7 innings for the win, and getting into the Dodgers bullpen didn't seem to go so well for the Giants anyaway

go Angels!
Jim, since when are you an Angels fan? Unless I am misremembering decades of existence, you have always been that worst of all possible baseball fans--a Yankees fan not from New York. What happened to make you abandon pinstripped existence for the Los Angeles rally monkeys of Anaheim? I can't think of one thing that connects you to Disneyland. Or is it the size of your man-crush on Mike Trout that has made you abandon your man-crush on Alex Rodriguez? Trout certainly seems less of a disgrace to the sport. And to sportsmanship in general. But still. Admiring Bryce Harper's talent doesn't turn me into a Nationals fan. The Angels? Really? I just threw up in my mouth.
Let go, Oakland!

Took my son Ryan and his pal Adam out to the yard on Saturday to see the A's v. KC Royals. Great seats just beyond third base, a gift for my 50th birthday a couple weeks ago. Right in front of a leatherlungs so overweight he wouldn't have been able to field a groundball to save his ass, but I was able to mellow him out by the end of the third inning with some actual facts. Phew.
Sonny Gray didn't have his best stuff, but gutted through six innings. Gave up a run in the top of the first, but Josh Reddick got it back and then some in the bottom half with a cannon shot into the right field seats for a 3-1 lead, one the A's wouldn't relinquish. The Good Guys added another in the second.
New 1B Yonder Alonzo started a crucial 3-6-1 doubleplay to crush out a Royals threat in the 5th (and save Jed Lowrie's E-4ing hide) and went 2 for 3 on the day. He would have had a third hit on a can of corn to shallow left but for an excellent running-to-the-left-field-line and diving catch by Royals 3B Mike Moustakis that unfolded right in front of us. Major league play, that.
Stephen Vogt launched a howitzer over the right center field wall in the 7th on his replica jersey giveaway day.
John Axford quieted the enemy for an inning and two-thirds. Sean Doolitte came on and got Jeff Gordon to fly out to DEEP center field to end the 8th, and Ryan Madson came on for the save in the top of the 9th protecting a 5-2 lead. Took him seven pitches to find the strike zone and then Jed Lowrie's SECOND E-4 of the afternoon put runners at first and second. Enter Salvador Perez, KC's superb catcher, representing the tying run. He stung a ball into Jed Lowrie's glove, who started a 4-6-3 to get the first two outs. Yunel Escober singled up the middle to bring Moustakis to the plate and give KC a second shot with the tying run at the plate. He hit a looper, caught by Lowrie, to send us home winners. Not great relief, but just good enough.

Raised a Dodgers fan. Never considered it when I moved to the Bay Area in 2002. Oddly, if I'd have moved a few years later, I'd have probably stayed a Dodgers fan due to the excellence of the MLB app that lets you listen to any game. But, when I came north in 2002, it was either Giants or A's, and for me, that was a no brainer. If I ever move again, I'll stay an A's fan.

I'm stuck with being a Rockies fan, and the Dodgers are a hereditary baseball enemy due to my early childhood in St. Louis. It was the Brooklyn Dodgers and the N.Y. Giants then. Went to my first MLB game to see the St. Louis Browns, 'cause Dad wanted me to get a chance to see the great Ted Williams in action with the Red Sox. Over the years, my baseball-loving father took me to many Cardinal games, so also got to see Warren Spahn, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe, and yes, the venerable Satchel Paige. Made me a fan at an early age. Being a baseball fan is a virulent disease from which there is no cure...
Dad even played minor league baseball in the Cardinal's system; 1931 at Danville, Illinois; the 3-I League.

Red Sox are for real. Pitching is suspect, but the offense and their young players are unreal. Been fun watching them this year. Betts hit 3 hrs today and made one of the smoothest diving catches I've seen, xander goes to 24 game hit streak, Bradley Jr. had a 29 game hit streak end last week, Shaw killing it, and Ortiz.
Baseball will be a little less without him in the game next year. Hands down the greatest all time clutch hitter and his 40th year has been one for the ages. Thanks for all the memories Big Papi.

The Cubbies have come back to earthling status and the Nats have quietly pulled within four

Go Cubs, indeed! I'm starting to cautiously allow myself a modicum of enthusiasm, to the
point that I'm going to start working my Chitown connections for tickets. Luckily, if more civil
machinations prove fruitless, I can still resort to more effective means through the good
offices of Vinny. Hey, it's just business!

If I remember, Nolan Ryan still has the fastest pitch, adjusted for different measurement methods, although Bob Feller throwing a pitch through a paper target before a motorcycle doing 85 mph has reached its target is pretty cool. All over at AT&T! Cubs advance, the Gnats can bitch and complain. So much for the even years theory.
So far I'm 3 for 3 in my predictions. The Dudgers and Nationals play--in D.C.
I'm not really a Cubbies fan, but I'm sympathetic with their curse of 100+ years without a World Series ring.

Anybody see my baseball trivia post about Yul Brynner a couple pages back? Here's another:
Had a friend over Sat night. A high school friend roomed with The Mick their first two years with the Yankees. He didn't last and sort of lost touch with Mickey eventually. The night Mickey died Fred had a dream where Mickey stood at the foot of his bed and said "Goodbye, Fred, I enjoyed rooming with you." The next day he found out Mickey was gone.

I played baseball into HS and have always said I'd like a crack at an MLB pitcher. That stopped with Chapman. Every pitch in the bottom of the 9th was at or over 100 MPH.
Happy the Cubs are moving on. Worried about either the Nats or the Dodgers. I'm particularly worried about the Dodgers because I think Utley has a chip on his shoulder and is finally playing for his hometown team after a great run in Philly.

I foresee a Cubs-Nationals NLCS. The Cubbies should win that matchup handily. My crystal ball shows the WS between the Bluejays and the Cubs.

Congratulations apogee's Dodgers.
WASHINGTON – In a postseason marked by clubs aiming to end championship droughts, the year 1988 does not conjure the same sense of desperation that 1908 or even 1948 evoke.
Yet, the Los Angeles Dodgers have seen their own travails in the nearly three decades since Orel Hershiser and Kirk Gibson last brought a championship to Chavez Ravine. Now, their road to end that stretch runs right through Chicago.
The Dodgers chewed through the Washington Nationals’ ace and their sturdiest bullpen arms during a four-run seventh inning Thursday night, summoning the resolve that marked much of their season, and then hung on to register a 4-3 victory in Game 5 of the National League Division Series.

I tried everything, Tad. But the whole damn telecast is crap.
The camera work sucks. The picture goes from one long facial closeup to another facial closeup to another facial closeup - then a pitch - and back to this guy's face and that guy's face. And they're all a bunch of dogfaces.
I'm more interested in seeing how the infield is playing, or how deep the outfield is, or what the baserunners are doing, or maybe the base coach is sending signals. You know, the game. Not another guy's unshaven face, filling the whole screen.

Even ignoring all the replays there is a tremendous amount of superfluous info in these broadcasts. A good time lapse editor could probably cut the viewing time in half. Then interested viewers could take the saved time and rewatch the cool replays.
Does anybody really need to see these games in realtime? Don't y'all remember The Sting? Only important for betting.
I will be watching the Lakers v Warriors on Wednesday 'live', ball scratching and sh#t-talking and all.

Adrian G. played right down the road apiece at Eastlake High, but the Dodgers are in L.A. Huh?
He still comes around to visit and he sponsors a lot of stuff.
Seems like a good guy.
Gonzalez's ability to effortlessly cross boundaries, both real and imagined, was something his parents wanted for him.
Almost 40 years ago, when David and Alba Gonzalez thought of starting a family, they knew that where their children were born would affect what opportunities they had.
"We wanted our children to be born in the United States," David says. "We wanted them to learn English and study in the United States." So even though David owned a successful air-conditioning business in Tijuana, he and his wife settled in the San Diego area. David used to commute daily to Mexico for work until shortly after the birth of Adrian, his third son.
Wanting his boys to learn Mexican family values, David moved the family to Tijuana.
"In Mexico, families are very close," David says. "Our children don't leave the house when they're 18. They stay with us until they're married."
Adrian and his older brothers, David Jr. and Edgar, learned baseball in Tijuana, where baseball has historically been more popular than soccer. And the competition, especially among young boys, is fierce.
"At the younger age groups, the level is higher in Tijuana than it is in the United States," Edgar says.
But while Tijuana provided a solid foundation for the Gonzalez boys, the family returned to the San Diego area when Adrian was in the fourth grade. The primary purpose for relocating was for the children to attend high school and college in the United States. There were baseball reasons too. Quote Here

Ryan entered The Guinness Book of World Records with a 100.9 mph pitch. That speed was measured by a laser radar when it was 9-10 feet from the plate; if measured at the standard distance of 50 feet from the plate (as PITCHf/x does), that extrapolates to an astounding 108.1 mph.
[Feller] in 1946, when army equipment clocked him at 98.6 mph; that measured the speed as the ball crossed home plate rather than as it left his hand, so one computation had Feller at 107.9 mph (though it was probably in the 101-to-102 range).
Both [Gossage] and Nolan Ryan were clocked at 103 mph during the 1978 All-Star Game and Gossage continued to throw upper-90s heat for most of his 22-year career

I really hate that nit picky instant replay on whether the dude kept his pinky on the bag after beating the throw to the bag. That one the other day where the runner was headfirst, well over the bag, and as his cup bounced him up with the tag still on him, he was thumbed. Total bullsh#t.

robo ump for balls and strikes... they have proven they just can't do that part of the game, and they've never been good or consistant at it. Check swings too...
that basepath stuff is soooo lame. If you beat the throw, and actually touch the bag while doing so, the bumpy aftermath should not be grounds to call you out. Usual caveats, like being way off, or sliding past the bag should be a judgement call. The letter of the law in this case is not good for the game.

What position you guys play?
I was a catcher and 2nd baseman.
Played 3rd base and SS from LL through high school with some catching. We had a ball buster coach in High School... asked us who were catchers on day one. I found out that catchers had to run laps with all the gear on... and I'm talking about big laps, not a track. Told him I was a 3rd baseman. I remember doing way less running on the high school soccer team than on the baseball team.
Played 3b and SS for a bunch of years on an adult hardball team for never made it thowbacks from the bigs, college players and local minor leaguers trying to get some work in. That was a really good league. I played a few league nights a week and pretty high end tournament softball while that was going on and really never stopped playing. I'm still playing leagues and tourneys now. I just got back from Las Vegas after playing in the Senior Softball (40 and up) Worlds. We stunk, but them fossils can still compete. Ever seen a 70 year old man hit a softball close to 400ft? I have. Unreal.
Asked up thread... ever seen 95mph heat? Yep.. and got hit by the wild bastard. I still have a monkey bump just above my left elbow where he plunked me. He was a pitcher for the Mariners working on his control. Never found it I would guess. A few guys in that league had 90+ stuff. Good times.

Still use the Glovolium or some newish stuff that is basically lanolin based with some vit E.
A real glove is about $150 to $250 these days for a heart of the hide Rawlings or Wilson. Never liked the Mizuno or pre broken in stuff. I hate a real soft glove because the fingers will bend back on hot smashes...
I got a Rawlings glove for my 10th birthday... cost a hundred bucks then!!! Still have it and it is still in good shape.

Only slide into first when the throw is up the line and a tag play might happen... or if Blantons fat ass is forcing Adrian to try a swipe tag or something.
Hate that play... the fingers and thumbs and other body wrecking things that can happen make it a really bad play. And slower than running through the bag. Just say NO

I'd like to see the Blue Jays win a few games with the Indians taking it in 7.
And for Joey Bats to go 1 for the series, get plunked a few times, then have a long cold offseason with no suiters rolling up with wheelbarrows of $$$$ for next year.
I always want these things to go 7 games, unless it is my Cubs! They need to just win the damn thing quick!

I'm a one sport guy. Last time I watched football, Roman Gabriel was tossing wobblers over Deacon Jones. Basketball? Huh? I know who Magic Johnson is... Dodger .0057% owner. Hockey... yeah I saw a bunch of octopus being hurled onto the ice and thought it showed some promise, but never watched another match.
After the world series all our TV's are tuned to Bravo and those loopy Housewives of Wherever, and well out of my control.
Pitchers and catchers report around 2/18. Can't wait!

Never an Angels fan. Was a Reds fan when it was the Big Red Machine... Johnny Bench, nuff said.
I was always a pretty big Dodger fan but have soured on them since I can't see them on DirecTV because of the SportsNetLA bullsh#t. Now I root for individual performance, but like to see the organization suk it a bit.
Like the Giants too... I have some Bay Area connections. Liked the Yanks mostly because of Jeter and the antics of Steinbrenner and that whole circus, and murderers row. Like the RedSox too and Fenway.
But the Cubs... they really won me over because every day when I would get up (@ 11am) the Cubs game was coming on, seemingly just for me. That no lights thing really worked well for daytime baseball on TV. And Harry... and Wrigley... easy choice.
On my hatrack there are 3 hats: Dodgers, Cubs, and Giants. I might add a Sox hat for 2017.
Edit: oh and to add...some of my best bro's are from Chicago, including Sooze, and they are all Cubs wacky. Makes it easy.

Sure... a bunch. Mickey Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Bonds and go through Canseco, Sosa, Bo, and now Seager. Gonzalez has like 6 stolen bases in 13 years. You can do that by just showing up. Some of them big sluggers were 30/30 guys. That is 30 homers and 30 stolen bases.
Here is a great link of the 30/30 guys. Impressive.

Thanks for the list. I don't know what the numbers are, but aren't there a whole bunch of hitters, who like Adrian G., aren't runners?
Ted Williams, a local boy from Hoover High, touted as the best hitter of all time by some, didn't steal that many bases if I recall correctly.
Looked it up. Twenty-four in nineteen years.

Sure... lots of players can't run, not just sluggers. But to say that he can't run just because he is a slugger (which is sorta debatable anyway) is not the case. He is just slow. He is not alone!

It's the body structure in my opinion. Super power muscles are not adapted to speed.

The other half of "the TwinTowers" as they call themselves on the softball forums. Ozzie Canseco, Jose's brother. Short major league career. Nothing much as a MLB guy but can probably whack a softball pretty good. Career .200 hitter in 3 seasons.

I was wondering if anybody knew what Mr.Sianis acttally said.
A local Greek, William "Billy Goat" Sianis, owner of the Billy Goat Tavern and a Cubs fan, bought two tickets to Game four. Hoping to bring his team good luck he took his pet goat, Murphy, with him to the game. At the entrance to the park, the Andy Fran ushers stopped Billy Goat from entering saying that no animals are allowed in the park. Billy Goat, frustrated, appealed to the owner of the Cubs, P.K. Wrigley. Wrigley replied, "Let Billy in, but not the goat." Billy Goat asked, "Why not the goat?" Wrigley answered, "Because the goat stinks." According to legend, the goat and Billy were upset, so then Billy threw up his arms and exclaimed, "The Cubs ain't gonna win no more. The Cubs will never win a World Series so long as the goat is not allowed in Wrigley Field." The Cubs were officially cursed. Subsequently, the Cubs lost game four, and the remaining series getting swept at home and from the World Series. Billy Goat promptly sent a telegram to P.K. Wrigley, stating, "Who stinks now?"
This is the best I could do on short notice.
Apparently he was not being high-fived. Murphy was faster than sheeit (though not near as quick as Calvin) and actually stole more bases than Lou Brock (at the same age).

Get that bullpen hot and put all those hopes and dreams in Blanton!

5 unanswered runs...I'm surprised Kershaw is still in the game. Except who knows what the Plan B would be.
Cubs are back online...Dodgers have been on their typical post-season choke.

Jansen's solid as usual. If he had an opening pitcher...and some actual hitting...we'd be looking good.
Sounds like he's going free agent next season? Dodgers have depended yyuuggellly on Kershaw-Jansen. The rest of the bullpen has been way too erratic.
Lose Jansen, and that picture looks grim.

Well, it's a bummer to see the Dodgers out- they've gotten close in the last few years, and keep getting shut down, and that's gotta suck for all of them. It would have been nice to see Vin's last season capped by seeing the Dodgers in the WS. Ah, well...that's baseball.
Still, the prospect of being the team that stopped the Cubs was not enviable, and DAMN. Those Cubs are a great team this year. They absolutely earned that pennant, and the coming WS is gonna be great fun to watch.
The Indians have their own, equally-engaging history...that's gonna make it tough to decide which Team to support. I'm thinking I'll just sit back, and watch some really good baseball, and root for both of them.

So what was the common thread between this game and those two shutouts against the Dodgers? According to ESPN Stats & Information, it was the unusually high percentage of fastballs the Cubs took for strikes against the starters they faced in all three of those games.

More truth to this than Yogi realized.
Given the speed of major league pitchers, based on my calculations, subsequently confirmed in the scientific literature, you can't.

The Indians became the first team with five shutouts in one postseason (and the Cubs became the second team to be blanked four times). The Cubs went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and the Indians went 1-for-5 --
when the visiting team takes a 2-games-to-1 lead in the World Series, it wins that series 71.1 percent of the time (32 of 45).
Yeah, but how many games did the series go?

Brought to you by my favorite high school beer! Y'all come back Tuesday, hear.
Just the facts ma'am.
No team has climbed out of a 3-to-1 hole to win any World Series in more than three decades, since Brett's 1985 Royals did it against the Cardinals. But only three teams have ever won a World Series the way the Cubs are trying to win it -- by going down, 3 games to 1, winning Game 5 at home and then taking Games 6 and 7 on the road.
Those three are Stargell's 1979 Pirates (against the Orioles), Mickey Lolich's 1968 Tigers (against the Cardinals) and Bob Turley's 1958 Yankees (against the Braves). And that's it.

On tonight's local news, they ran a story showing the Google searches for the Cubs versus Indians by State, as a follow on to Lebron James' rallying call of "Cleveland against the World."
The ratio in favor of the Cubs was something like 6 to 1. Only Ohio ran more searches for the Indians than the Cubs.
Believelanders wouldn't have any other way. As an Indian player stated in an interview in Chicago last Friday, "We're happy to be the 'other team' who won the World Series."
The odds were against the Indians going in, but they have played better than the Cubs. That could change, and the improbable can happen, as it did for the Cavs against the Warriors. Our gods play with us.
I ran a statistical test with a friend in Chicago, to neutralize home field advantage. We flipped coins: two tails in a row, Cubs win. Cubs won my toss and lost my Chicago friend's toss. Go figure; go Tribe.
The Cavs moved up their game tomorrow so fans, including the Cavs themselves, could catch the game.

The Indians have definitely been more consistent than the Cubs...though I'm leaning towards the Cubs for historic/sentimental reasons, the Indians have played more solidly and consistently.
In any case...bummed to consider the end of the season for both of these great teams, and to be facing the long, dry stretch to the next baseball season.
And I'm really.....really....going to miss having Vin Scully around.

Good to see Ohio stalwarts like DoBreedIniLove bros in the house.
I don't usually watch baseball, but when I do, I watch the Cubs take game six and the series move to Comerica where the home court advantage is gone like the wind that lifted LeBrown up to trap that ball on the backboard.
I plan on seeing Cleveland coming within one of matching Detroit's 1935 NHL, NFL, and World Series trifecta.
Peace, over/under and out!

If it turns out to be a slow game or a runaway (could be a pun there) please weigh in with thoughts regarding the differences between AL and NL! All, serious or chewing tobacco in cheek, appreciated.
Besides the obvious, the DH, the National League requires more thought from the managers, and if you are pitching and wanna play the beanball game, you can get plunked in return.
NL ball is what I prefer. Everyone plays and hits...

^^You certainly have a better eye in this arena, but aren't the ballparks sizes different?
Lots of facts here:
http://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor/_/year/2011/sort/HRFactor
Also,
Because the pitcher hits 2-4 times a game (among other reasons), in general offense is lower in the National League. When offense is lower, teams tend to play "small ball" a lot more, which involves stealing bases, bunting, hit-and-runs, and the like. American League baseball is a bit more station-to-station, trying to get the big hit.

The games at Wrigley -- and I'm thinking mainly about that 1-0 game, but there was another tight game there -- are so much more interesting on account of both teams playing NL rules (no DH, pitcher's spot has to hit).
That 1-0 game was a real-deal chess match. When the cameras panned over to Francona or Maddon, you could literally see them thinking in real time.
By contrast, in the AL, the manager is usually thinking about what pinot noir will pair well with tonight's filet mignon, or HOLY SH#T THAT BROAD IN THE FOURTH ROW HAS A HUGE RACK

All the parks are different and some have really funny stuff going on... like the inplay ladder at Fenway or that goofy hill they had in center for whoever that was last year.
Pitchers will have a higher ERA in the AL, since the pitcher does not bat too... grip it and rip it is the AL way... manufacturing runs is the NL way with bunts, steals and lineup swaps to maximize production late in the game.

When I lived in Chicago we used to watch the CUBS from those very rooftops.
I was in 4th grade back then .....
I was there during the Ron Santo, Glenn Beckert, Billy Williams, Ernie Banks, Don Kissenger, Randy Hundley era. My dad would buy 'obstructed' seats in the grandstands for $1 apiece. Of course he'd move us down to box seats until we got kicked out. Then we'd just move to the ample open seats that were available down one of the foul lines.
We would show up 1-2 hours before the start to watch batting practice and maybe snag a foul ball. Back then, they didn't use batting cages for batting practice.
One time, when I was 6 years old, a batting practice foul ball came our way and clattered around in the seats a few rows in front of us. I ran down and picked up the ball. As soon as I did that, a big guy grabbed it out of my hands. As I was welling up with tears (I was 6) a blur flew by me and took this guy over the row of seats. My dad was beating this guy badly. He gets the ball back, hands it to me and says, "hang on to it next time."
We got escorted out. My dad probably should have been in jail and if it were today, sued and starring in a viral video. But that was 1969. A different time by all measures.
Go Cubs!

What a historic series.
BOTH teams played exceptionally, with many moments of baseball brilliance. All of the history that each team brought to the field...Cubs come on strong, in the crux game, and the Indians fight right back...
A rain delay....extra innings... and the Cubs do what only a very few teams have ever done in baseball history, fighting back with 3 straight wins....

Just to to keep things in proper perspective
The Ricketts family, who purchased the Cubs for $845 million in 2009, along with Wrigley Field and a minority share in Comcast SportsNet Chicago, could see the value of those assets rise to around $4 billion by 2020,

If you get bored with politics, try Googling "Cubs blueprint"
optionally include a city of your preference.
So while it’s a nice marketing technique to try to link the Padres to the World Series Champion Chicago Cubs, the Padres are not following their blueprint. I’m sure they’d like to but unless Uncle Ron is getting ready to sign the two top free agents in consecutive years and commit $500M+ to free agents, it doesn’t look like that’s the path this club is going down. And minus multiple important, highly paid contributors like Jon Lester, John Lackey, Dexter Fowler, and Ben Zobrist, the Cubs aren’t a World Champion.
