pitchers and catchers report! those magic words apply as of tomorrow.
seems like we were just celebrating the Cubs winning the World Series.
we will see something we've never seen before in 2017, the Seattle Mariners in a World Series, against who else but the Washington Nationals. They're the only two MLB teams who have never been to the World Series.

2017 World Series:
Cubs Vs Red Sox. Cubs win in 6.
My predictions:
Dodgers collapse early. Giants in the playoffs again. Washington continues to underperform. Angels try to make a run but fall short. Indians are barely .500. KC loses 90 games. Oakland loses 120 games.
Bartolo Colon signs a 3 year deal with the Giants after posting a 3.14 ERA and pitches over 200 innings, again.

Dan Norris is having a roller coaster start to his season.
http://m.mlb.com/news/article/226731668/daniel-norris-unable-to-work-deep-into-games/
He looked like ha was getting it dialed in at the end of last season, but inconsistent control is getting him into deep counts. I saw him two starts ago and it was obvious his delivery was all over the place just watching where and how he was landing after delivering. His manager touches on it in the article but if a hack like me can see it I would think his pitching coach wouldn't let him leave the practice mound until he threw about 1000 pitches in a row with his landing in the same spot.

The Giants' Strickland is such a doucebag.... every time he gets lit (which is pretty regular as a pro choke artist) he hands out hard looks and gets all pissy...
So today, he drills Brice Harper for homers he hit in 2014! Fight... glad he got popped by Harper.
And the fact Posey did not move from behind the plate to restrain Harper shows what Posey thinks of Strickland... even his own team won't protect him. Buster wanted no part of it...
What say you?

Baseball is messed up. Ron Santo is 95th in dingers, had a good glove, and
a respectable BA yet they didn't elect him to the HOF until he'd been in the
dirt for two years? WTF?
So how many years until the Cubbies win again? They, nor anybody else, in
the NL are gonna stop the Blue Crew. Houston is looking pretty gud but them
Dodgers are looking impressive. The pen still has some issues but their bats
are making up for it. 163 run differential through 83 games!

...the Red Sox Nation welcomes you, Russ... my SF Giants friends all had the same question when we picked up The Panda: "really?"
He was truly in the class of the David Wells trade (recall that on May 8, 2005 Wells lasted 1.1 innings giving up 9 hits and 7 runs to the A's... I had to remind my wife who attended the game with me that it will at least go down in baseball history).
She had read the sport's writer's criticism, aptly applied to both players, that they "were one hotdog away from the DL"
In the meantime, a "walk off walk," where the BoSox take the win in Fenway against the Yankees after trailing into the 9th, has to be one of the sweetest victories. But even I thought it excruciating.

On October 9, 1869, the "Silver Star Club" of Carson City, Nevada played "a match base ball game" against "the Virginia Club" of Virginia City, Nevada.
Sadly, my newspaper source records neither the result nor the box score.
My guess is that Walling played left field for the Silver Stars in that game, went 0 for 4 and misplayed a pop fly into a sun double.
Donini managed the team.

Houston was an NL team until recently, is now in the AL West
Springer has been on the DL. He's chomping at the bit but with an insurmountable division lead in second week of August, there's no rush to get him back on the field
Dodgers-Astros would be a great matchup and possibly even a ratings dream. LA is a big-market, storied franchise. And the Astros have a surfeit of telegenic young guns

uh, no. AL west has been one of the toughest most balanced divisions in baseball for a number of years. This year has been one of the only recent times when one team has run away from the pack. Even this year AL west teams are holding their own as a divison.
games won per division so far in 2017:
NL West - 302
AL East - 290
AL West - 288
NL Central - 277
AL Central - 265
NL East - 261
The trick now with the expanded playoffs is to be the hot team going into the postseason. Houston is trying to rest its horses, and are losing some games as a result. Dodgers are also resting some, but just can't seem to lose. Sort of a dangerous strategy to kick back and then hope you can just turn it on again.

The Dodgers are 8-2 since Kershaw went down. They're not gonna rush him back even though he says he feels fine.
The Washington Capitols are playing well again and are 7-3.
Houston - not so much at 3-7. Not exactly charging to the finish.
Boston looking better. Of course, if they finished third or fourth it would still be good as long as the Yankees were one place lower.

interesting stat Jimbo. What does that say about the DH? You'd think it wouldn't matter 'cause when American League teams play in National League parks they can't use their DH, but the NL teams get to use a DH when in AL parks. You'd probably have to look at how AL teams structure their rosters. They carry a DH who is supposed to be a very good hitter, but NL teams have only backup players beyond their normal 8 starters, so when NL teams get to use a DH they have to pick that player from their non-starters. I think the advantage goes to the AL teams in that case. Maybe the records are more even in inter-league games played in NL parks???
EDIT: thanks Jim, figured someone in the know has thought this thing through better than I

Call me a cynic but I don’t see the Cubbies holding a 2 run lead. Schwarber needs to spend more time at the training table, he’s looking lite! Whoa, he almost pulled a ‘Puig’!
Ho! Nats are bringing in the Norwegian! Hope he has a knott in the end of the rope!

atrocious pitching by the Cubs... third out is the always the toughest
Pissing away a lead like that??? The inability to put a foot on their throat while they are down is really showing.
Edit: Contreras has some sort of gun... crappy call though to end that inning. Replay saved the Cubs ass on that one.

I'll take a weak win, but your are right... Dodgers would grind out either of these teams with the kind of play they are serving up tonight.
If I was a Dodger, I would not even hit the weight room tomorrow and just go out drinking instead.

Nice work by Davis. The ex-Dodger Werth really blew it on Russell’s second ‘double’. That was an error all the way. I won’t be rooting against the Cubs, and I would be happy if they win, but I say Dodgers in 6, if not 5.

What a game last night. Go Cubs Go, but I thought the Nats were the better team in the series. Great hitting lineup; almost no holes even with the pitchers.
At least I get to watch the Cubs play four more games this season, anyway. Dodgers look like a machine this year.

My money is on Houston to take the whole she-bang. I've been watching them beat-up on the Mariners(yeah I know, big deal..) for the last three seasons and they are very deep. Adding Verlander to the rotation was a pretty slick move as well.

So the other current game of the night, nationaly shown on ESPN, is CAL playing my fondly remembered from college daze WSU Cougars, currently #9 & favored by 16 points, in the heavy fire-smoke in Beserkaly.
Score at the half is CAL 17 - WSU 3, with an upset brewing.
The stadium smoke is so heavy, it obscures the players at times, & it is near the level where the NCAA rules mandate shutting down the game. I doubt that is likely, with CAL winning at home, but I feel sorry for the players.

Fritzi, if you watched Cal last week against UW you saw total domination of the line of scrimmage. Our three defensive linemen totally dominated their five offensive linemen. We didn’t even need to blitz. Cal averaged -1.5 yds/rush! Our offensive line crushed their D for 5 yards per rush and allowed one sack. Cal had 92 yds the whole game! Men against boys. We will annhilate the Cougs. Can’t wait!

I dunno, maybe the Cubs pissed the Dodgers off last night?
OK Russ, your first post to the thread:
2017 World Series:
Cubs Vs Red Sox. Cubs win in 6.
My predictions:
Dodgers collapse early. Giants in the playoffs again. Washington continues to underperform. Angels try to make a run but fall short. Indians are barely .500. KC loses 90 games. Oakland loses 120 games.
Bartolo Colon signs a 3 year deal with the Giants after posting a 3.14 ERA and pitches over 200 innings, again.
The world series call sounds like two predictions so that's how we'll treat it. We'll forget about the Colon comment. With those caveats in mind it looks like you made 9 predictions.
Obviously it isn't Cubs or Red Sox in the WS (maybe I'm posting a little prematurely but I don't see the Cubs scoring at least 8 in the 9th with Jansen lurking.). 0 for 1. Six games? How can teams not in the WS go 6 games in the WS? 0 for 2.
Dodgers didn't collapse early - they may still collapse in the WS but that isn't "early". 0 for 3.
Giants pretty much started spring training 2018 the day spring training 2017 ended. 0 for 4.
Washington sort of did underperform. I guess we'll give you that one. 1 for 5.
Angels fell short. Yeap. 2 for 6.
Indians are barely .500. 102 and 60 = .630. 2 for 7.
KC loses 90 games. They lost 82. Whoa, that one almost got through but it's still an out. 2 for 8.
Oakland loses 120 games. Nope, 87, not close enough. 2 for 9.
So - 2 for 9 = .222 average.
Care to venture/hazard any revised WS 2017 predictions at this late date?
Edit: Wow, Hernandez again. 11 to 1. Done.

hahahaha! Those were solid predictions!
WS will be an easy win for the Dodgers against Yanks. 5 games. Baby bombers will stink. Kike will not hit 3 homers in any game in the WS.
Kershaw will still be a question mark and never go more than 6
Kenley will give up one bomb and have an .071 era
Edit: Bartolo: 143 innings pitched, 6.48 era and no contract on the horizon... survey says Russ misses another one!

so far the theme of the 2017 post-season has been big-name pitching choking in big-game situations. Verlander was the sterling exception.

Dodgers win one (or four) for one of those catchers (hardest working men in basebiz), Roy Campanella!
Can't I do better than that?
OK
t all ended in 1957, when both the Dodgers and Giants deserted New York, the Dodgers moving to Los Angeles and the Giants to San Francisco. By then, Campy's star was fading. He was 36 and the brutal physical demands of catching had taken their toll. Then came the accident. He never played a game in Los Angeles. That didn't make a difference. He became Mr Dodger. He eventually moved west and worked for the club as a goodwill ambassador.

When Roberts came to the top step after Kershaw served up the round trip I was getting a little nervous. But then he started humming the fastballs and buckling knees with those hooks and all was well.

Folks take this very seriously.
The first time through the Astros' order, Kershaw didn't do anything special. He fed the Dodgers a steady diet of fourseam fastballs, using curveballs and sliders when he got ahead in the count. Kershaw threw 20 fourseams, four curveballs and eight sliders his first time through the order. He used the curveball twice on 0-1 pitches, once in a full count and once in a 1-1 pitch. He never had a negative outcome. The thing that makes Kershaw's curve special is how different it is from any of his other pitches. It has a looping 12-6 action that makes it very difficult to sit on. He throws it higher in the zone than most pitchers, but due to arc you frequently see batters either take it or get on top of it for an easy groundout.
... That wasn't the case on Tuesday. Kershaw threw 13 fourseams, one twoseam, four curveballs and 12 sliders to Astro batters their second time to the plate. It isn't often we see a left-handed pitcher become so reliant on his slider, but it was effective. The downward and in breaking action jammed up right-handed hitters, whereas lefties never had a chance on the sweeper. Kershaw's lone twoseam of the game was an 0-2 pitch at the knees of Josh Reddick for a called strikeout in an at-bat where Reddick took three consecutive strikes.

Seager, although not an ex-Mariner, gets to be half a Mariner as his brother Kyle is a Mariner stalwart. Hey, that's the way it is, I don't make the rules.
And there's Taylor in the middle of it all yet again. He saw 19 pitches from Verlander in his 3 at bats. Got Verlander talking to himself.

Boom BOOM! :) :)
Get off the single track
Once a right-handed pitcher picks up his front foot with only a runner on first base, he must throw a pitch to home plate. If there is a runner on second or third, the pitcher can use a slow pickoff move, turning around and throwing to second or using a lefty-style move to throw to third base. However, in this case, the only runner is at first base, and so Verlander must throw a pitch or else it will be a balk. Verlander apparently realized he had balked by the time he finished his turn for the pickoff move, and attempted to throw to the plate. You can tell it was meant to be a pickoff to first by the footwork he employed.

Battle
Anyway
The play probably wouldn’t have ended so oddly had Verlander not attempted to save face and then hit DeJesus in the attempt. In most occasions, the play would’ve been recognized as a simple balk. Instead, it turned into a bit of a farce in which the announcers had no clue what was happening and an umpire meeting was required. Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised – in a century-and-a-half old sport with a variety of nearly incomprehensible rules and regulations, the balk rule may be the most confusing. This play was merely another example.

After 5 hours and 17 minutes, the Astros win 13-12 in the 10th inning.
It wasn’t pretty, but it featured five home runs by five different Astros,
a new World Series record.
And the total of 7 means the teams have produced 22 home runs in the series, also a record.

On December 1, 1964, Roy Hofheinz announced that the Harris County Domed Stadium would be called the “Astrodome” and the Colt .45’s would become the “Astros” in 1965.
The long and the short of it.
L.A. wins number six in 13 innings and they decide to call it a draw.
Watch a very outspoken Colt 45 supporter in full here. Caution, naughty language.

Little known is the fact that the story in The Natural is based on a true, real-life story…
Aye! It is. A True story…The story is of an original femme fatale, perhaps – where, in the late 1940s, a young woman, Ruth Ann Steinhagen, 19-years-old, developed a crush on Eddie Waikus, the handsome first baseman for the Chicago Cubs. So complete was her obsession that she insisted that her mother set a place at the dinner table for him every night. He never showed, of course, but for being unaware. Not surprisingly, Steinhagen also had a shrine in her room dedicated to Waikus, and it was reported that she would get the vapors every time she went to a Cubs game and was in the vicinity (along the first base line) of Waikus. Understandably, she pitched a fit when Waikus was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies at the end of the 1948 season – and as the real life story goes – it was then that she decided to kill him.
When the Phillies were in Chicago to play the Cubs during the 1949 season, Steinhagen set her trap – she booked a room at the hotel where the Phillies were staying, and sent a compelling and convincing note to Waikus, urging him to come see her. She gave a false name and her room number, and the promise that “…it would be to your advantage to let me explain [further].” However, improbable as it may seem, Waikus agreed to meet Steinhagen in her room. So, he went to her room, slowly walked in, and sat down – and that’s when she pulled out a gun – and shot him!

Tonight is what baseball is all about.
I am not accustomed to watching baseball on TV.
And yes I too wonder how/why Joe Buck is in the booth.
And Tad.... I will only say this one time. You disappoint, I know your a die hard Giants fan... I am a LA Dodger fan... I hate the Giants-always have- ever since that dude took a bat to our catcher.
But when The Giants, or any NLW team is in the world series, or any series where the Dodgers are not, I root hard for them because National League West is the toughest division and all the teams in it are "my team". After that I root for the National League winner... How can you root for an American League team???
They put dresses on the pitchers, you know.
LOL...

Sandy was The Greatest.
So three innings of Darvish, Wood, and Kershaw should do it tonight, eh?

Sandy was The Greatest.
And don't forget Don Drysdale.....Big D
some of my earliest memories are of when those two went on strike cause they wanted $100,000.00/year and a multiyear contract.
how times have changed.
Tad, Donini and to all the Astros Fans.... sorry you need to loose, LA has never had a game #7 at home with the WS on the line, this is our time.
unless it isn't.
Lets just watch and enjoy.

I just hope Darvish does not decide tonight is a good time to plunk Gurriel. I think he is smarter than that, but the quiet ones are the ones you have to watch.
I bet the Dodgers (and Astros) will play the kitchen sink if they need to. We will see all the big guns before the night is over.

Dodgers way overpaid for Darvish.
He’s not fooling anyone.
Dodgers swing at everything. The Astros swing at their pitches.

Hernandez should replace Bellinger. Is Roberts afraid of hurting his feelings? He doesn’t have a clue right now.

Oh for 9 with runners in scoring position won’t cut it.

Dodgers are cooked!! They can't wait to do their fun off-season activities like jet-ski and, I'm sure, reading great works in literature.
Astros are champions!!! It's all over but the crying!!

Congrats to the Astros. A well played series by both teams but I believe the best team won. With their young players a dynasty may be in the offing.
Puig was certainly outed as a blowhard.

I think the Dodger's youth is what did them in.

I wouldn't consider Darvish a "youth", yet his performance sorta sunk the Dodgers battleship

Guy, Big D was great, but for one game I would take Koufax, or Gibson.
A half century later that 1968 game 7 still hurts.
For money pitchers, Jeff Weaver is right up there.
After yielding six runs in four innings in his first start, Weaver played a key role in the Cardinals World Series win. He won important games for the Cardinals in the final weeks of the season, helping them win the National League Central Division, and he started and won Game 2 of the 2006 National League Division Series. Weaver started and was the losing pitcher for Game 1 of the National League Championship Series against the New York Mets on October 12, 2006. He pitched five scoreless innings before giving up a two-run home run to Mets center fielder Carlos Beltrán in the sixth inning; as the Cards lost 2-0.
In Game 5 of the National League Championship Series on October 17, 2006, Weaver pitched 6 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, winning his second game of the 2006 postseason.
After losing Game 2 of the 2006 World Series to the Detroit Tigers, Weaver came back on October 27, 2006, in Game 5 to pitch 8 innings, giving up 4 hits and 1 earned run. He was credited with the win as the Cardinals clinched the series 4-1.

Just saw the sports report on Seattle TV News.
World Series? Astros?
No.
SEAHAWKS. Their top story was the Seahawks. The Seahawks have a game coming this Sunday, and in Seattle, that takes precedence over any World Series.
The entire sports report was Seahawks. Not a single mention of the World Series.

I remember 3 years ago the Astros were horrible. Owner Jim crane was making bank off the team from various tv deals and the move to the American league. My brother told me about the SI cover and we were both skeptical. Was amazing to watch Springer make the prediction a reality.
Jim crane is a less than wonderful person, crooked business man too, but that is okay now

Remember
"[Pitch speed] has less of an effect than people think," says University of Illinois professor Alan Nathan, who studies the physics of baseball, with a focus on the collision between bat and ball. "Each additional mile per hour of pitch speed is worth about two-tenths of additional batted-ball speed, which only works out on a high fly ball to about a foot for every increased mile per hour."
Cuba si, Yanqui no?
Aroldis Chapman, a 22-year-old Cuban defector pitching for the Cincinnati Reds' triple-A affiliate in Louisville, captured baseball fans' attention when he threw a pitch clocked at 105 mph.
...
The batter facing Chapman had only about 0.35 seconds to react before the pitch reached him.

ya, ya, so the Astros won the World Series, do we have to keep talking about it? Everybody in Seattle already knows how good the f**king Astros are, why waste valuable airtime, band width, ink or oxygen rehashing it. They'll probably be in the World Series the next 10 years in a row. Believe me, it's going to get old.

I am on my way out of Houston now and they are no where near finished talking about this. We were thinking about going to the parade today until we realized what a fiasco it was going to be. Transit fail bigtime.
