Terrific atmosphere, great rock: a nice place to build lots of good memories.
I took most of these snapshots about 10 years ago, while running around with Bruce Hawkins: (RIP Bro).

Tarbuster, I love the shot of Oz.(Gram Traverse) and Hobbit Book.
Link-up for the everyman.
Great pics!
I do miss that that place.
P.S. I've done the bellyflop four times on Hoodwink's "Roof".
Roger Breedlove, I dig that climb, it's got a great view.
Muchas gracias!!!
Racing a storm on Great Pumpkin is my greatest Tuolumne memory, although many are fond.

I met Richard Grode at a party. Your a climber?, says I. Will you take me climbing? Yup! We were in Toulumne the following weekend.
Golf Ball route was the first climb of my life. The following day Richard took me up Cathedral Peak and I was HOOKED! Sitting on the summit of Cathedral, the vortex of Toulumne, was a religious experience. That was 17 years ago.

Not sure whether Tuolemne or JTree is my fave,
but having one be in season in Summer and one
be in season in Winter is close to heaven on earth.
I picked up and leafed through the draft plan for
Tuolemne from the grill two weekends ago, and I
get a really strong sense of care from all of those
involved. Really nice job. I noted that all four of
the proposed options list climbing as one of the
recreations that is planned for, and that speaks to
the fact that many of us revere and care for our
favorite meadows. Good vibes...

Hi Matt,
No, that fellow on Ursula is Le Tarbaby, summer of 1980. I had left my first Stetson, a nice grey felt rendition, at the base of Sweet Jesus, One Toke over the Line, the week before…
The roof moves on Mesmerized:
It starts out fingers, a long reach through a wide hand section to good jams, then a big high step to get around the lip, some sort of 5.11.
The last pitch exit is kind of strange too; I chose a roundabout way that required a point of aid out left to get by a loose block, and when I looked down, I saw the way Dale Bard went, because I saw his bolt (or maybe just the holds, not perfectly sure about the presence of a bolt), which can't be seen from the belay. Essentially, you need to make a committing move up onto a hanging arête.

You are on Unicorn. In the background is Echo Ridge (the highest formation) and some Echo Peaks. Cockscom is further to the left and is out of view. Can you give some beta about the old North face route?

Sure Misha, I can render some vague beta, along with a bit of superfluous background.
Bob Ashworth told Tim Messick and me about the route.
Here's Bob Ashworth out in front of the Tuolumne branch of the Yosemite Mountaineering School, circa 1986:
He just said he knew there was a route that had been done there, that may not have been free climbed, so we consulted The Climber's Guide to the High Sierra (Roper). Here's what it said: “Various short and unaesthetic routes have been done on the north and northwest faces. A three-pitch route, 5.8, A3, has been done on the direct north face.”
So Timmy and I got blasted on good weed and charged (struggled) directly up to said route, which consisted of a rounded flake, mid-face, either left or right facing (sorry). That's what we climbed!
I love your photos man, keep them coming!

Showing my friends around the neighborhood, ca.1969. We had a hard time finding a dry place to set up camp. Bears were everywhere. I don’t think there was a gate at the campground then, and so we just had to do the best we could getting back there in the snow and mud.
Hangin with the folks along the river, ca.1964.

I kept checking back with a kind of morbid curiosity...on the "lighter side"--Tuolumne is the best place in the world. As a dad now, I look forward to spending time on the beach, each year, with my growing brood (now 3 kids!)
Recent postings notwithstanding, your thread domination continues unabated....Hobbit Book IS the best!

Third Pillar, Mt Dana
Variation starts, right of the standard route:
(my line, Pajamarama, starts at a detached square block, then along the right of a prominent fin; I think Maysho did the next one right)
Shelley on the outside variation of The Ear, mid route:

Quite a life in photos! Your slide collection must fill a whole closet, sitting there dusty and dark for years until scanners

LongAgo wrote these words long ago:
“Upon hearing a conversation such as this one, TM Herbert would probably have said, ‘All right, to your corners. At the sound of the bong you’ll have one minute. Bottles and logs permitted.’ But TM didn’t arrive in Tuolumne until a week or so later. When he did, we set out to do a new route on a dome near Medlicott (the dome is tentatively called The Lamb, and the new route, Lament, III, 5.10). TM is the only climber who is an expert at both whimpering and karate. One section of the new route was 5.10 smallholds climbing, and TM began his mind-blowing moans at the sight of the tiny crystals. After various pops, whistles and screams, he managed the section and calmly claimed that the climb was one of the nicest he had done. Apparently even 5.10 can be kicks in Tuolumne.”
In the original 1969 American Alpine Journal article, for some reason (no fault of LongAgo’s, I’m sure) the magical place is consistently misspelled “Toulumne.” I sanitized the quotation above. But anyway ... I was at an impressionable age, back when I first read this passage by LongAgo, and I immediately added Lament to my list of life’s goals. Like all my other goals at that time I was not ready for such a lead yet. But a few years later I came back, to run out the tiny crystals imagining “mind-blowing ... pops, whistles and screams.”

Yes Chiloe,
Quite a stack of dusty old slides to be sure & the dust shows up great when you scan them too!
Nita,
Yes, Jenny Bergeron; she was a lot of fun, and I'm sure the two of you worked together at the lodge. When I was done with guiding, we'd go climbing, she'd then head off to the lodge and I would go eat at "side hall" remember that? Pretty good fare for the employees I must say.

This thread has brought back great memories of time spent climbing in Tuolumne. It's nice to combine such great climbing with beautiful scenery.
Here is Eichorn in a storm. When we arrived here I knew we should be able to see it, but we couldn't see anything more than 15' away in the fog and rain. Then a little lift in the fog and WOW! Quite an experience.
These next two photos were taken within 5 minutes of each other. This 2 day storm started clearing right at sunset. Perfect timing! The first photo is a re-post.

Some fine pictures and writing!
Last summer I enjoyed watching Minerals (Bryan) and team with their car race flag, waving at speeding motorists as they went by the gas station. A clever idea, though not all the 'wavees' were amused.
At least one morning there was a real speed trap on the stretch into the gas station from the west, for the particularly inattentive.

Probably my first trip to the meadows. I remember being seated on the end of one of those way-bent over lodgepoles and being sprung up and down like a bucking bronco. I also remember the "bath" in the river, the pancakes at the grill, popsicles at the store, fizzies with Soda Springs water, and the smell of the old family oiled canvas tent.

Tuolumne-one of my favorite places on earth. Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of photos from the early years.
Here’s Brenda Bachar at, I think, Darcy and Tubesteak’s wedding
Someone pondering an ocean of knobs-Bachar/Yerian
Tommy Herbert bouldering at Olmstead
Herbert just plain wore his spotter out
Kauk bouldering at the Gunks
Nick Fiore with his back to me talking to Tony Puppo and his wife
On the edge of Third Pillar looking down Tioga canyon, a beautiful and incredible spot
Finally, a day chillin’ at the beach. Should have brought more water, though

Tuolumne will always hold a special place in my heart. Before this summer, I had never done any climbing that involved rock shoes - I had done my share of scrambling up peaks, but no bouldering, no roped climbs or anything like that. I had always wanted to try, but never knew anyone or where to start.
This July I was invited to camp in TM. My sister's friend is up there every summer camping and climbing and I was told to bring shoes and I'd get to try it out.
After a few days of hiking and doing my own thing, I finally found someone willing to take my beginner ass on some routes. With a borrowed harness, grigri and ATC, we headed for DAFF. West Crack had parties on it, so we did the two bolted face routes while waiting. In hindsight, my leader should have showed me a bit more beta on lowering with the grigri, but everything went well and we also did the first pitch of West Crack, then rapped down instead of trailing parties up farther (and the start of the second pitch looked a bit intimidating for a first day climber). One more pitch on Low Profile dome and I was done for the day. A couple days later I was able to latch on and follow in a party of three up Lunar Leap on Lembert Dome.
I was hooked.
Got home and ordered my own harness, chalk bag, 2 lockers and ATC.
Went back up by myself a few weeks later, as there were still friends camping. Highlights of that trip were West Country, Cooke Book and Phoebos! Got home and ordered a proper belay biner, personal anchor, nut tool and a couple more biners.
Made a final trip labor day weekend and drug my g/f along - she liked climbing more than hiking b/c the approaches were much shorter than my all day hikes I would drag her on. She borrowed some shoes and made it up the bunny slopes before we left!
I've now got enough gear to setup top ropes around here (santa barbara) and we're thinking of Jtree for halloween now! TM and Jtree before stepping foot in a gym sounds great to me ;-)
One trip and I'm ruined. New surfboard money has gone into climbing gear for now, but it is something that I see myself doing alongside surfing for the rest of my life.
enough with the words, here's a photo essay:

These pics made my day. I missed Eds pics when he posted. Really nice! Thanks Beth, Ed, and Tom! TM was certainly different this past summer. Lots of late snow. I hadn't seen it so snowy that late before. I thought that we were heading towards a similar year this year, what with so much snow coming over Christmas, but now its been mostly sunny for a month. So who knows what it will be like, except that whatever it is like, TM is always beautiful. Thanks again.

I have photos here somewhere of one of the best days climbing I ever had, at the Meadows.
Partner and I were up in the meadows for about 10 days. On our last day there, we climbed lucky streaks, then ran over to do Oz, then had enough day left to do the Regular route as a simul-climb. No falls from either of us. By that point in the day, the crowds at the base were gone, so we didn't have to try and pass anyone on the hard part. We'd planned on using regular route as our warm up for the day, but that was insanity with it being a Sunday. 3 parties of 2 waiting around at the base, and a party of 3 inching their way through pitch #1. Running around to LS was the right move, even though it was shady and cold.
We topped out on Regular Route (whole thing took 50 minutes), ran down and still had enough time to jet over to Phobos / Demios cliff. But after that hike and all that came before it, with only an hour or so of daylight left, we opted to just sit around up there, dozing peacefully in the late day ambiance.
TM is my favorite place in the world. so, TTT!

Hands down my favorite place to climb. I was fortunate to learn to climb there and got back for a few long weekend trips. Unfortunately I don't think I have a single picture of the meadows.
It has the best rock, fine grained granite, perfectly eroded, great cracks, knobs and the occasional pockets and the meadows just resonate an internal peace and awe within you.
It's been calling me, don't know when I'll get back.

Was going through a bunch of my photos and noticed this one, of an obscure crag in Tuolumne – Proctology Wall. I haven’t climbed here but wandered by one day on a geology hike. Figured I’d post it because there isn’t a photo in the Reid/Falkenstein guide. Refer to page 205 in the 4th edition of the Reid (Falcon) guide for the topo and approach info… if you actually want to climb here. It’s no surprise that Norman Boles was involved in the FA of these routes, based on the names. He and Brian Bennett just can’t help being crude when it comes to route names. Remember that one Valley route name about Fresno??? Leave it to Bennett to think of such things…

for whatever reason, I didn't have much going on in Tuolumne Meadows this year... sad to let a season go by without lots of memories... but my very best effort is shaping up to be an FA I did with Eric around and about that region... a 4 pitch climb with three pitches of 5.10...
Eric had called and asked "what are you up for?" and I replied "anything", he asked me that three more times and I replied the same... I could tell he was psyched for a great project, which we did...
(I'm not supposed to reveal anything about this... but I'm horrible, I know, but don't ask where... I won't tell)
It was the best of the all to brief season for me...

I had a great trip this season and saw that Jay Wood posted a few photos from it - I was lucky enough to have him gun for me on some great routes...
Letting him 'use' my rack, hoping to get some of the shine off...
but he barely placed a thing on Piss Easy...
Glad I found a route up there I was comfortable to lead...
Another awesome route to follow this trip...
Such a great place and I'm ever grateful that the friendships I've made up there continue on to other locales all year round!
(edit)I just reviewed my post from last Oct and Jay Wood was the very next poster and someone I would later meet and climb with in Jtree in March of this year and TM in August! The small world of climbers.

2 long weekends this month and one more coming up! Can't get enough...
...and the climbing was great too - just didn't take any pics of it! From a full-moon 3-man simul of Cathedral (that included J Wood!) to flailing on Do or Fly and leading some slabby runouts - it just feels so awesome being up there...

Wow. It makes me very, very happy to see this thread on the front page again. Gets me all sentimental 'n such...
Roy, I remember looking through your photos on THIS VERY THREAD four years ago, during the last semester of my undergrad at Appalachian State in 2008. The lifestyle, climbs, and characters your photos exposed made me shift my priorities from grad school/career search to calling up the DNC and hunting for a job in the Meadows (great priorities, I know). I couldn't have been more excited when I got called back by the manager of the Tuolumne Meadows Lodge and offered a job up there.
I remember thinking of how I would get the opportunity to join in my own part of the tradition that your photos and stories revealed.
Which is sort of what happened over the course of the next three summers. I worked at the TML, Mono Market, and just dirtbagged it in the Meadows. The relationships I developed, routes I climbed, and all forms of experiences had could fill at least a volume. Someone said earlier on this thread that the Meadows is "heaven on earth" and I couldn't agree more.
My roommate and good friend Eric topping out the Third Pillar, which happened to be his first 5.10 onsight ever. Ironically, an older mentor of mine (Norm Larson from Wilson, WY) had climbed this thing just in front of us and snapped this photo of a relieved Eric just as he topped out.

So I Finally got to climb today in Tuolumne.
Last time I climbed was in JTree about 6 months ago, remembering Woody. His daughter, Tia, led Sexy Grandma and I made it up the rock just cause I needed to honor Woody and the name of the climb. :D
Today my son in law, Dave, and I were ready to do Darth Vader and Golfers Route but weather way hot and we didn't have the right gear so we retreated to Western Front. It was cooler but crowded. We chilled and hung around. I did Touch of Grey which, like Sexy Grandma, was right up my happy challenge line.
I made it. Took me two tries to get off the ground and then I came off once up where the gold slippery rock challenged. (Don't go that way). It was a blast, made it to the anchor and the endorphins told me I need to work my core and climb more.
LIFE: it is good and we need to keep after it. Love to all yo Campfire Taco Heads. C-YA at the Facelift.
Cheers, Lynnie

Half a pitch up on Lembert Dome
And the rain turned into hail
Me and Kelly, climbing some,
Thought we had better bail.
Hands all full of wet damn ropes
With iron on our racks
We abandoned all our silly hopes
Of doing Water Cracks.
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Let it come another day
Then the storm had passed and we were half-gassed
Cuz weed will get you high
We almost missed Mathis’ truck as he was passin’ by.
So we jammed ourselves in
And we all just grinned
And he dropped us at Tenaya’s camp
We looked at the lake and we jumped right in
Cuz we were all high and damp!
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Let it run all over me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like Jelly Roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
On the way back home we sang a song
But our throats were getting dry
Then we saw the man from across the road
With the sunshine in his eyes
Well, he lived all alone in his own little home
With a great big gallon jar
There were bottles too, one for me and you
And he said, "Hey, there you are"
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Get it myself
From the mountain stream
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like Jelly Roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like goin' home
And it stoned me

One of the best / longest days I ever had was in the Meadows. It was downright magical.
Partner and I woke up early one Sunday, about 4 days into our 8 day trip, intending to climb Regular route on Fairview as a warm up, then walk through the forest to climb Oz, then after that - who knows?
Arriving at the base of RR at about 7:30am, we knew we would have to call an audible as there was a clusterf**k in progress with one party of 3 slowly making their way up pitch 1, and two more parties of 2 impatiently waiting at the base.
We walked around to the right and instead decided to jump on Lucky Streaks. I'd climbed it before, a year earlier. A bit cold over there, even in Late June and there was still a sizable wedge of snow at the base - and pretty much everywhere on that side of the dome.
Climbed LS (with the 10d variation) fairly easily. Then walked off and headed over to Oz. I'd never climbed this before but always wanted to. Feeling totally dialed in, I led and onsighted every pitch except for the final short 10a which my partner took. We'd briefly considered doing the gram traverse, but ended up opting not to.
The only hitch on Oz was my partner falling off following the traverse on pitch two and having some difficulty getting back on route from 6 feet below the crux. Him outweighing me by 25 lbs did nothing to help my attempts to assist hoisting him past the blank area he was marooned in. But, that was eventually sorted and we were rewarded with the famed dihedral. I expected that to feel harder than it did, but it went for both of us with almost no hesitation or thrutch at all.
We botched the descent and had to reverse a single rope rappel into nowhere off some slabs atop Mariuolumne dome (if memory serves, this was 16 years ago). Finally managed to get our asses down, which included several hundred feet of butt sliding down the still ample snow field on the final slope.
With plenty of time still left in the day (I think it was only about 1:30pm by this time) we decided to go back over to look at the Regular Route. Now, there were only a few parties above, starting at pitch 2.
We talked briefly and decided this would be the perfect time to try our hand at simul-climbing, what with the route getting easier and easier as you went. I led pitch 1 and as the rope came tight, my partner started climbing. We passed every other party on there, and only stopped twice to swap the lead as we ran out of gear. The whole thing took less than an hour. Neither one of us having had ever simul-ed before, we marveled at how quickly this made climbing easy ground go. But also stopped to reflect at how it might not be that much better than just free soloing under some circumstances.
On top, awash in endorphins and still with all kinds of daylight left (we were only a few days removed from the summer solstice) we decided to try and make a mad dash to Phobos/Demios and try and squeeze in one last classic.
We hurried off, piled into the car and drove to the cliff lot. The hike up to P/D is a fair bit more strenuous than the usual TM approach. Halfway into it, our buzz from climbing so much and in such nice style was suddenly replaced by a surprising weariness. The bonk was looming at our door! But we soldiered on and arrived at the base of Phobos starting to feel seriously knackered. A brief 20 minute rest / recharge / eat / hydrate period was just enough to give us back some juice, but we cut it short in order to avoid giving in to the temptation to say "meh, good enough... let's have a nap", and ambition won out over exhaustion. I racked up and somehow, managed to wriggle my way up what felt to me at the time to be the hardest 5.9 of my life. I was running on pure instinct by then. Most of my energy (along with a fair bit of technique) had evaporated by then.
We topped out just in time to lose the last of the actual daylight, then having neglected to bring headlamps on the route, had to navigate back to the base by braille and lots of squinting. The hike back down to the lot, by the dim illumination of the old school, weak ass petzl single incandescent bulb headlamps was a total comedy of stumbling, leg-cramping idiocy. We dubbed the state we were in "The place beyond pain".
We finally arrived back at camp some 15 hours after we left. We both stuffed ourselves to bursting, then skipped bothering with a campfire and wordlessly just retired to our tents for 13 hours of sleep. The next day became a rest day by default.
I'd always loved the Meadows, but that day cemented it as my favorite spot on planet earth to climb at. I doubt I'll ever have another day as satisfying as that, or as memorable.
Cheers to the Meadows. Just magical.

But someone already did that too.

Based on new evidence of plague activity in animals, Tuolumne Meadows Campground in Yosemite will be closed from Monday-Friday next week for similar treatment. This flea treatment is commonly used to protect wildlife, pets and human health from this disease. Yosemite National Park remains open and all other campgrounds and facilities in the park remain open to visitors.
Although the presence of plague has been confirmed at Crane Flat and Tuolumne Meadows campgrounds, the risk to human health remains low. Action to protect human and wildlife health by closing and treating campgrounds is being taken out of an abundance of caution. Campground visitors are being notified by Yosemite National Park of camp treatments, possible plague risks and provided information on how to prevent plague transmission. An investigation into a case of human plague in California, and environmental evaluation in the Stanislaus National Forest, Yosemite National Park and the surrounding areas led to these actions.

regurgitated:
during the arab oil embargo, there were long lines at any gas station, the one next to C4 was no exception. what was different was that they weren't letting you pump your own gas, which was a change-up for me since we cheap guys only patronized self-serve stations.
so when i came out of the loo, there were empty pumps ahead of me, and a huge line behind. i hustled over to jump behind the wheel, intending to park out of the way and go in to pay up.
my sequence was screwed up what with the intervention of a pump jockey, as i only got my wits about me enough to check my side mirror just as the pump nozzle broke off. it had long since shut off at full so no big mess.
boy was the boss man hot! he knew just what the replacement cost would be and he was out to extract that from me right there on the spot. in the same breath he accused me of attempting a drive off, which i apparently failed at.
well that got my back up and i argued that the attendant's performance was lacking, that i provided the revenue to buy insurance with, not him, and what the hell else was insurance for if not accidents. i gave him enough for the gas only and then proceeded to, as he indicated, drive off!
so my nerves had pretty much settled by the time i approached the tioga gate, and out steps ferdinand into the middle of the road. i was promptly swarmed by LEO and grilled pretty hard.
i was more than happy to tell my story and things got progressively more relaxed as ferdinand, and then the others saw things my way. they even sympathized and i got the idea that
the station boss was going to hear from them about his selective reportage.
i was sent on my way with genuine politeness

If I drive my Bimmer up to Yosemite, the rangers at the entrance station salute and say "Yes, Sir!" If I drive my old 69 van, they look at me funny and have me pull aside for a full-cavity search.
Today, it's money that matters most in our national parks.

RottingJohnny - I'd guess that photo was from the late 60s, when Nic was pretty much in charge of the High Sierra camps and used to charge around to them on foot at incredible speed. I don't know where I grabbed the photo - I think from ST - and I hope the photographer speaks up.
Ferdinand of course was the ranger at the entrance. Carl Sharsmith had already been there forever. He was my plant taxonomy prof at San Jose State, and quite exacting, and I loved him. He and Alan Shields and Will Neely and I were the seasonal naturalists at TM summer of 1957. (I especially recall an evening of wine sampling with Will and Harding in Will's tent cabin. We woke up bleary in the morning and there was a leftover bottle of Madeira on the table and Will said, "Ah, Madeira - the perfect breakfast wine!" I don't think Warren said anything for another hour or so.)
I think Carl oriented more people to the environment than anyone I have ever known. Excepting perhaps David Suzuki or Dave Brower. A wonderful man. A little group of us have been trying to get an unnamed peak in N. Yosemite named for Carl for years. No luck. The Board of Geographic Names is a tough nut to crack.
Ferdinand, after officiating and welcoming people effusively at the entrance for many years, got transferred to Crane Flat entrance by the NPS. I don't know why. Perhaps he was making Tioga a little too much his personal station. Anyway, it positively broke his heart and he died not long after.
I could tell you some wonderful stories about Carl. So would a million other people - who now look at the Sierra - and the environment - in a whole new way. There were campfire talks by the naturalists at the time, and Carl and Will would sometimes sing Gilbert and Sullivan with guitar and harmonica, so well you couldn't believe it. That wasn't environmental interpretation of course, but it sure drew people in.
Lots of unexplored routes then on that amazing knobby granite. Damn few climbers.
Those were good years.

eKat is so right - he was a real steward and loved every natural feature.
Yosemite toads would sometimes migrate across the road just inside the entrance in large numbers as they came out of their winter dormancy. Quite a few would get smashed by traffic. Ferdinand once tried to get the sign shop to make him a sign reading "CAUTION - TOAD CROSSING!" But they wouldn't make it for him.

Just remembered an interesting rescue up there when I was Asst. District Ranger, early 60s. Some guys - I think there were three -were hiking the ridge near Mt. Dana and for some incredible reason decided to slide down Dana Glacier. Of course they lost it and wound up in the canyon the worse for wear. One had a broken back. One managed to come out and notify us.
Since that area isn't in the park and there was no rescue team then we called the Marines at Pickle Meadows Mountain Warfare training centre. They would send a team the next day. I grabbed a sleeping bag and some food and meds and sprinted up there, spent the night with them.
About a dozen Marines showed up next morning, got him into a basket and very efficiently packed him out over damn rough country. There was one short, tough lieutenant who was in charge. Everybody else rotated on and off carrying the stretcher, but he never let go! l couldn't believe it. You want guys like that on your side.

Tom and I used to solo Cathedral on his Bday. We would carry day packs full of beer, and herbal remedies. In the second picture we had just passed a roped party, and Tom had stopped to gab with a rather attractive belayer. They were laughing and having a good time, much to the dismay of the leader, who was struggling as we passed by.
When we hit the summit register, someone (Herb or Vern) had left a big fat spliff inside saying whoever got there first should have at it. Timing is everything ;-)

Tuolumne Meadows is still in my top #3 places to climb, free-climbing.
But I haven't been back in recent years. My life soured, and so did the spectacle of dealing with the usual crowds.
Tuolomne will always have reverence in my heart, and I haven't even done some of the really cool shit!
I love the place, just hate the crowds it draws. And I'm not complaining, I don't blame people for checking it out!
Best un-finished climb that I haven't done? "Holiday on Rock", Marmot Dome. Always get stormed off it for some wierd reason. There are some others there too, when the crowds get to be too much.

Flip Flop, Hurray! Excellent, tho short, TR. The picture of the three with their backs to the camera, headed off gives me goose bumps. I have a similar picture in hand from tarbuster taken years ago. Things change, but things, too, remain the same. A big cheers to you and family, friends!!!

We've had close to 3 weeks in Yosemite so far this year. A week in the Valley in June and nearly 2 weeks in Tuolumne. Our TR is kidstyle. Shanghai campers. Skateboard raspberries, float, soccer, swim, bike, camp, hike, soccer, climb, tent, art, stories
TR
We made it up to Vogelsang for the first real monsoon winds of the season. Ho Man! I had to drop the megamid but the Whitebark Pines kept us happy. We had a dinner reservation at Carl's Place;) but traded for breakfast....where we met the cuties just finishing 30+ miles with their Mom and Grandad. Lynnie, the goosebumps were everywhere that day. From Vogelsang to Twin Bidges and the lodge, that was our trail view. I'm over the moon about this trip

you have a beautiful family flip flop. Thanks for sharing your trip with us. When I was a kid we did 2 week camping trips to Yosemite. Those are some of my favorite family memories. That gave me a deep seated love for the outdoors and for Yosemite. I ended up working and living in the park for 25 years.

How's the smoke up there? We're setting up camp on Tuesday for annual family excursions next week.

Excellent run of photos, Flip Flop!
What a great group of kids: I dig the crayon art.
Okay, how about the one on the right of the three kids here.
I'm going to go out on a limb and observe: she's sharp as a tack and no one is ever going to sell her something she doesn't want.
Also, I predict natural athlete and future medical researcher.
Sorry, I see a face issuing resolve and capability and I just take an interest, whatever the age.

I was amazed how much the older sister looks like my son. His goofy look and her wise look notwithstanding.
If the smoke wasn't so bad this weekend, I'd planned to shuttle up some gear to explore the Arrowhead and the other faces in the area. I haven't been to Hanging Basket yet but am excited to wander those crags

Minerals, are you on FB? Dave Yerian and I are completing a book on Tuolumne. We may be able to use this. How can I get in touch with you if you are not on FB?

Yes, Dave told me about the book years ago. If you don’t mind posting a coded email address here, I can send you an email. No FB for me.

Chris and RJ, I don't want to make you feel bad or anything.....:) But this is why this place needs to be handed over to another and not given the IV morphine to put it to sleep. (Sorry, harkening to the past there.) Thousands of such encounters and discoveries have taken place here!
I just printed off my husband "Dan Leichtfuss passed on Thread" so his grandkids would have a booklet of great particulars, knowing what a super grandpa they had.
Cheers, lynnie

Minerals, this book has been a wonderful work in progress! Ask Dean Fidelman about picture collecting for books from this crazy tribe and our book spans @ 40 years.
Here is my "if a business needs an email for me address". I will look at it today to get yours. Thanks! Did you make that or only photograph it?
Cheers! lynnie

Got it, thanks, Lynne. Feel free to delete your address here.
Email sent. If you don’t receive it, let me know.
That is one of the NPS trail signs, and if I remember correctly, it’s around Mono Pass, looking towards the southwest, so that’s the Kuna Crest in the “background.” If you click back one page on this thread and scroll to the bottom of the page, both Flip Flop and Sir Ed Hartouni have an example of these metal NPS trail signs in their photos.

Minerals, just emailed you. Yes, I know those signs. There's a great one pointing the way to Spillway Lake. Would you allow us to perhaps use your photo? Cheers!

Just checked... Yes, that’s the sign at Mono Pass, at the park boundary. Sure, you can use the photo, but I’ll have to send you a full-res version. Photo was taken Thursday, January 5th, 2012, at 11:57 AM. That’s the northern end of the Kuna Crest, with Mammoth Peak on the far right. This was during the crazy winter, when it was so dry that Tioga Pass opened back up before Christmas, and stayed open into early January. People were ice skating on Tenaya Lake.
Here’s a photo of the entire sign.

And here are a few more photos from December and January of that winter.
Frozen surface of Tenaya Lake
Dana and Gibbs, and a frozen Dana Fork of the Tuolumne, Dana Meadow
Glacial polish and striations on Cathedral Peak Granodiorite, and the domes and peaks of our favorite playground

Tuolumne Appreciation is a beautiful thread to keep up front!
Thanks Tarbuster for all the fantastic threads, photos and content. You have been at the head of a significant cadre of folks providing outstanding value to the Supertopo community. The list is long but everyone knows who those fantastic creatives are.
The beauty of the mountains will continue to change.
