Worked a rescue drill and area familiarization. Not very aerobic. 1/2 marathon in the morning. Finished that all important carbo load, and will crash shortly. 1 1/2 hour drive to a 7 AM start - YIKES - for a brutal run through vineyards. Looking forward to the finish.
Optimistically I packed the car with climbing gear thinking we could stop after the race. 20 years ago, I know I would. Let's see what the old girl has in her tank tomorrow.

I'm drinking coffee right now, getting ready for about 6 hours on the bike. This will be my longest ride yet. The 60 I did day before yesterday really wiped me out, so we'll see how this goes.
I'm a little nervous about this century ride next weekend. This will be my first. The thing is that the crux of the ride comes after the 60 mile point (about an 18 mile hill climb). I just hope my pistons will have enough left to crank out that hill late in the ride like that.

I'm doing my coffee before a medium trailrun.
Edit; did a seven mile Fivefinger trailrun on the headquarters trail. On to the crags!

Reeotch, staying properly hydrated on long rides is your friend. I've done several centuries over the years and average about 280 miles a week these days. Water is not enough since your body needs protein and carbs on that long a ride and liquid nutrition is better than a pbj sandwich.
I'm a big fan of hammer nutrition for endurance rides, not a sponsor or salesman, but the stuff works.

Mt. Elbert South trail yesterday. 4,800 elevation gain and about 5 miles one way to the summit, in about 3 hours.

Three Triathlon deaths I can see, so far, this w/e. May be more dangerous than climbing.
Only 11 miles. Came out too fast in the heat and got beat up on the hills.

Rick, you probably smoked some 20-somethings out there. Nice.
The old lady finished around the 25% mark in a field of 1,300 deranged people accumulating personal worsts for a 1/2 marathon. The 1.5 miles inside the Lange vineyard reached new levels of ridiculous - it seemed that the soil was freshly tilled on the steep uphill.
At the finish, we were confronted with yet another endurance feat. 30 vineyards were providing 2 - 3 tastings. My pacing was good.
Visitors - I have piles of coupons for tastings in the Dundee Hills.
Next up - the Cascade Lakes Relay. 12 women and 200 mountain miles.

Yep, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
Yesterday I rode about 82 mi. in a little over 7 hours. I drank 2 liters of water, plus 48oz of gatorade (yeah, I know, but it is better than water at that distance)
Ran out of fluids with about 8 miles to go. It was probably right around 90 degrees by the time I finished.

Well, 10 weeks into an intense summer of training for nordic racing next winter. Mix of trail running, weight lifting, roller skiing, cycling. Eager to see what I can do next winter if I actually train with a consistent organized approach. It is cutting into my climbing however! I feel addicted to the aerobic action, finding myself contemplating going over to Snowshed to do laps with my bro's, but usually opting for a wonderful trail run instead!
Yesterday I got worked! Though I have been doing more miles on the road than ever before, I haven't been on my mountain bike in 6 years. I went out with some hardcore mt. bikers, Mt. Rose to the Flume, around Marlette Lake, up to the Tahoe Rim Trail, back to Mt. Rose. 30 miles. Legs felt strong, and I could handle the 4 hour effort, but my bike handling skills put me way off the back...not willing to bunny hop through all the boulders, very cautious. No falls though, and I live to ride another day!
Not too sore or anything this morning, and I do get to climb all week with my climbing camp kids.

Peter, be smart on that mountain bike. With a good summer and fall of focused training you should be dangerous this season. Have fun!

Here's a solo ride I did today (3 trips up to East Peak of Mt Tamalpias via 3 different routes). It was full on Winter conditions (in the middle of July, LOL). Froze my ass off on a couple of the descents despite being dressed for Winter...
Gotta love the Bay Area!

Heart-rate was kept between 135-145 even on the steepest sections, basically an endurance pace.
I'm surprised more of you guys aren't on Strava. It's like crack for us healthy types. ;-)
