Wrong turn winner!
The 34-year-old eventually asked a course official how much farther to the finish line.
“Once I realized what I had done, I figured, well I’ll just run 20 miles and use it as a long run and call it a day,” she said.
That was until she noticed very few people ahead of her. She asked the official if it would count if she ran the full marathon. After a brief word with the race director, she learned her time would be honored.
So, onward she ran.
Having only run 20 miles prior to this race, Fitzmaurice said nearing the finish line was “surreal.”
“I just kept thinking you can do this, just get it done. The last couple miles were really tough,” she told the wire service.
With her final time of 3:11:48, Fitzmaurice won the women’s division, took 10th place overall and qualified for the Boston Marathon. The maximum time for Fitzmaurice to qualify for Boston was 3:35:00.
In addition to adrenaline pulling her through, she said her success, in part, was due to how fast she was running during the first half of the race.
“If I knew I was going to be running the full marathon I probably wouldn’t have ran so fast. So maybe it was a good thing,”

One quick way to get an aerobic workout. Get in a swimming pool that is at least 6 ft. deep. Then stand in place, and do "hundred yard dashes" i.e. pump your arms and legs as fast as you can for 30 seconds or so, until you feel spent. Then rest about 10-15 seconds and repeat; do this eight times; it's a Tabata routine, but extremely low impact. Intense intervals with very short rest is much more effective than long runs and bike rides, per the amount of time put in.

Finished a "high volume week". Tuesday NIAD with Eric Perlman...got our money's worth out of in-a-day, clocking in at 23 hours 32 minutes! Good chance Eric at 63 is oldest to do this, and with me at 51 we have an impressive combined age of 114. Kudos to Eric!
For me this was a test of the benefits of a lot of aerobic base and muscular endurance work over the summer, without much climbing. Felt pretty good overall.
Roller skied the Bay trail from Berkeley to pt. richmond and back Saturday, very fun, then Sunday ran a double Dipsea. In hindsight this run deserved a rest day before, but it went well, super cool run!
About to start snowing on Donner Summit...hope to get something in tomorrow if it isn't a blizzard...

Very cool photo by Kristal Leonard pro park photographer of the milky way and the action on the Nose last Tuesday. Brightest light at Camp 5 is mine at about 10:45...4 lights above are two of the 5 teams that did NIAD that day!

Good work on the NAID Peter. I'm up in Skaha taking a fun break from XC/Enduro type stuff. I'll keep you posted if there are any good events up in the WA/BC area this winter.

Uh oh....bad ending to a great ride...pulled into my driveway and cleat wouldn't come out. Sometimes I think I get mud on the cleat and it gets "stuccoed" in.
Some people have double chins, I know have a double left knee
After an hour of icing it doesn't seem to going down 😧

Fat Paul - I bet that hike was gorgeous. I miss NE in the fall. I ran in CT back in September while visiting. The smell of the wild grapes ripening in the sun was fabulous - another element of home that I miss.
Ran 8 miles yesterday. Twinges today. I am nursing hard/easy days for another few days. You can't rest your way to glory for the longer races, and I signed up for a couple in late October and early November. If I get past this weekend's long run, tapering can begin. Want to be both fit and healthy for the Gorge Half Marathon and the Dirty Girls 10 mile runs coming up. Co-worker is putting together a team for a December Half Marathon in a part of Portland that should be more scenic. That should complete the bridge between rock climbing and skiing seasons.

Seamstress, had a wonderful jaunt through the Housatonic Valley on the AT. The ridges were washed in color and the weather perfect! It's incredible how that trail keeps giving around every bend.
Does anyone want to meet up on Thursday 10/31 to run the start of the Moab trail marathon course? I expect to roll into Moab around 12:30 and plan to run some of the start and/or finish. Also bringing my rack to climb during my stay. Interested in doing the Kors-Ingalls on Castletown Tower and a couple days at Wall Street. Open for anything within my limits. Will be departing Moab the afternoon of 11/8.

Last Saturday I worked out in the gym for four hours. Lifted 80,000 pounds of weights. All barbells, no machines except for the calf raise and seated calf raise machines.
My arms did not play golf well on the following Monday.
But my tennis was fine on Tuesday.
Lifting barbells is a lot of fun. It is surprising how a wimp like me can work up to a fair amount of weight.

On October 19th I logged in 18 miles, my longest run since having back surgery in 2007.
I'm at 1,377 miles for 2013. On course to run first ½ marathon Nov. 9th (goal is sub 8:00/mile pace) since 1986.
