Been staying jointedly fit in the gym so far this fall so I can get my aerobic on nicely this winter.
But,...
I got in a solid 3 hour day on the trail-moto on Sunday. 2 of those hours I was heart-zoning hard with a mild body pump whilst covering hella techy singletrack. It has been years since I have been as worked as I was yesterday all from a damn moto.
Good to see/read about folks out gettin' there complimentary activities on and staying fit!! Very important as we approach our geezer years for our body as well as mental stimulation for our deft execution of our endeavors.

When does geezerhood start?
I wish I could run on something but asphalt. Weird how that works. I can run up any paved hill but walk up my slightly inclined gravel driveway.

When does geezerhood start?
When was the first time you heard your parents' words come out your mouth?
Has nothing to do with physical prowess. State of mind.

You folks seem like fitness nazis: what do you think an idea vo2 max is for climbing? Or is that irrelevant?

Max VO² doesn't play into such "work" as climbing unless you are running up the rock. It is more relevant to exercise like running, cycling, walking, XCC skiing or some steady state exercise.
Jaybro, 60ml/kg/min represents numbers related to the max VO² of a highly conditioned athlete performing aerobic exercise in his or her prime years.

Like long moderate ( say Steck Salathe etc) solos or mtneering.
I assumed "idea" meant ideal. My bad.
I'm sure Ueli's ratio is higher than that.

Courtyard Wash in Moab. Long, but not technical with a lovely closing ride through Arches. I am frustrated about how slow I am on a mountain bike. It's amazing I can climb anything with my speed dropping so low.
Oh well....keep cranking.

Just turned 70 and trying to beat the "scientifically-established" 10%/decade VO2 max decline. My usual workout is to walk across the street and hike up Apex Pk. at at least 2k ft/ hr. It's 1300' up. BTW that's 1.3 miles at 15% in 30 min on the treadmill. Treadmill good too because there's no knee jamming downhill to suffer. So I mix 'em up. Also Lookout Mt on bike mixed in. Same 1300'. Smooth pavement, few cars (weekdays, see I'm retired) . Going to soon start adding skinning up first run at Loveland...

New bike is showing up Monday just in time for the time change and the end of commuting for a few months.
Riding to work in the dark is relaxing, completive.
Coming home in the dark,
darn near suicidal!

Did OK for 12 of the 13.1 miles in the Gorge 1/2 Marathon last weekend. Negative splits - nice!!! The rain held off until afternoon, and we were treated to fabulous views of Cascade choss. The last three miles were steeply downhill, and I flew through 2 of them. Then.....creak. Struggled with some soreness this entire week. That's the difference between being ready to race and ready to run.
Next weekend in the Down and Dirty 10.5 miles trail run. Location is the new vineyard. Hope to get more mileage in this weekend and the beginning of the week. How ever did I manage to race every weekend for years???

60 is pretty good but the top athletes in endurance sports have 80-90ml/kg/min so I don't think I agree with what you say.
My guess is that 60 is quite common among good climbers that climb long routes fast and that people like Uli has a much higher VO2 max.

Not agreeing is alright with me; so no problem there. For the sake of the discussion I will explain further. 60ml/(kg · min) is an average number for highly conditioned athletes. It was not meant to represent those of elite athletes.
High max VO² are not prerequisites for performance in endurance sports nor absolute indicators of performance in endurance sports.
I've never considered myself an elite athlete (far from it); however BITD my max VO² was 75ml/(kg · min). I was highly conditioned with a body fat % of 5.6; but certainly not an "elite" runner.
The highest recorded max VO²'s are 94ml/(kg · min) for a male and
77ml/(kg · min) for a female; both were competitive cross country skiers.
(Textbook of Work Physiology Åstrand, Rodahl, Dahl & Stromme)
In an activity such as climbing (more so than walking or running), O² uptake potential related to body weight is more relevant than liter per minute.

I love looking at the satellite images of my bike rides. Living in Santa Cruz the sat images are always so green. Currently in Moab, of course, very different.
Today's ride out by Monitor and Merrimac. The long straight line is, oh yeah, geez wiz, forgot to turn off the GPS unit when I got in the car. Seeing my stats as max speed of 62mph gave me a "Wow"...for just a sec.

Running ½ marathon tomorrow, no expectations. First one in 26 years.
It is fun to see GPS report I'm running 60mph when I leave my watch on.

½ Marathon: I came out too fast (as always) 7:46 pace for the first 10k's... then it became a strain.

Good job, Tobia!
It takes a lot of discipline to hold back at the beginning of organized events. But, whenever you can do it you will be pleased with your times . . .

meh, I got seeded in a higher corral last year in a 10k, barreled out too fast, slowed down on the big hill around 3 miles and ended up with a huge positive split, but also a huge PR.
Nice time on the Half!^
Put down my standard base week this past. Six days @ 5 miles plus cycling. Getting back to normal after the back to back 20 mile trail run and back packing trip in the dacks.

Appreciate that john and reeotch. It was fun, once it was over.
I've spent a few years coaching XCC and others about running. I just don't lead by example and I really thought I could hold that pace or close to it for the whole distance, not quite there.
