The deer did not survive. I felt bad about that. Small town Wyoming justice occurred. I got a $235 citation for leaving the scene of an accident (a good Samaritan kindly offered to follow me into town; it was zero out and I was leaking fluid), and another $235 citation for littering (the deputy found a couple of pieces of plastic from my grill at the site). Wow!

The law in Wyoming is that if there is $1000 damage to the vehicle you must remain at the scene, even if it's a lonely road with no cell reception and butt-ass cold. I went straight to the sheriff's office when I got to town and reported the accident. Guess that wasn't good enough. I can go to Pinedale in April and argue my case. Seems like a lot of money and a little Arlo Guthrieish.

Mike: Per your accident & bad-cop experience story:
I got a $235 citation for leaving the scene of an accident (a good Samaritan kindly offered to follow me into town; it was zero out and I was leaking fluid), and another $235 citation for littering (the deputy found a couple of pieces of plastic from my grill at the site). Wow!
That cop must have had a "very-heavy" badge, or else you reminded him of his ex-wife's boyfriend. When I used to travel Wyoming as an outdoor-gear sales-rep, I'd see hundreds of dead deer along the highways & I had plenty of close-calls without quite hiting one. I'm conditioned to thinking deer-car collisions are so common there & there's so much empty space, that your actions were logical & saved the cops some trouble.
Things have changed, I guess. The State cop that investigated my accident when I totalled my Ford Explorer during a snowstorm in 1995, was real pleasant. I remember him asking for my ID, as I was sitting in his car & I explained my wallet was still somewhere in my upside-down Explorer. He laughed & said: "Oh yeah, you salesmen are just like us cops, you do so much driving your butt goes numb if you keep your waller in your back pocket." He wrote up the accident with just my name & plate # & did not give me a ticket.
