A couple weeks ago my cousin and I had an overlap on our days off, so we decided to dash down to San Luis Obispo and give it a go.

Unlucky aluminum can vs. nut tool start redeemed by the water-tightness of a Flash backpack.

Climb notes: this link-up was a ball. Some of the sour-puss comments on MP make it sound like the various pitches are pretty much parallel, but they're not. The Challenge starts basically at the base of Bishop Peak and ends up on the top.

Gear notes: Having never been before, and going off some of the topos vague suggestions of small-medium gear, we brought waaay too much stuff. Next time we'll just be packing 5 draws and Camalots #.75, #1, #2 and double #3s. Fortunately my 30m rope was perfect.

For full Lycra value, rock them (pun slightly intended)into Mr. Pickles for sandwiches after.

jeebus. i thought the 2-tecate challenge was per pitch.

clicking thru to the MP discussion and reading all (ok i gave up pretty quick) the comments whining about how this was a "linkup" and not a real "multi-pitch," reminded me of why i gave up on MP.

That looks super fun, wish I knew about is when I lived there!

But I think that first photo violates the "no gross pictures" guidelines on ST.

Nice job with actually bringing the beers! Most I know who've done it neglect the namesake. If you do it next time just bring quickdraws and you can clip bolts out left on the face climb, "Dig a Pony," to protect the last pitch, "Flakes to Fresno."

I'd love to get back into Lycra climbing but the beer gut just doesn't work with Lycra pants.

Good one.

Regarding the first photo:
Is that a lemon for the Tecate in your pants, or are you just happy to see the climb?

Heh, I'll have to see if I can figure out how to post a screencap of the text conversation my cousin and I had about how many beers we were gonna go through (short version: he's more pragmatic than I am).

Regarding the first photo:

I'll let Burt Reynolds field that question:

First time I have seen a TR on bishop peak!

here's an old TR by Slater which shows much of the same area the 'Tecate Challenge' covers - cf. http://www.supertopo.com/tr/Bishop-Peak-SLO-A-4-pitch-adventure-route-The-Backdoor-5-8/t10640n.html

and here's an old video I shot while dragging a non-climbing friend up The Backdoor - before it was called that.
