Doggy 5.2 - Climbing Class 2 Mt. Agassiz with dogs

13,899 foot Mt. Agassiz is a great hike/scramble to do with sure-footed dogs - with a hand-belay or aid thrown in occasionally. Here is a short 1.5 minute video of the trip. By the way, Ande the border collie has a pretty hard fall caught on tape. My wife Bets is a veterinarian and checked him out, so we can say that no animals were harmed (too badly) in the filming of this video.

Great! Peak might be a bust with doggies, but I'm all for this. More freedom now!

I "think" we were OK with the dogs there. They are not allowed past Bishop Pass into Kings Canyon National Park. The park border is at the pass and up the ridge of Mt. Agassiz.
But the trail takes off before the pass and heads up the east side of Mt. Agassiz. The only part that could be a problem is the summit. - Ney

COOL!
My dog also loves plunging down a soft snowfield. I can't keep up with him.
Do you think the boots were really necessary?
Looks to me as if Bodie might not have slipped if he'd had his pads and claws.
Anyway, what a GREAT outing for 4 lucky humanz

We've done stuff like this before and their pads bleed if there is a lot of sharp granite around, like this climb. It was endless talus blocks and flakes. We run with them each morning so their paws are in good shape, but they still can take only so much.
But you are right. One dog (Bodie actually), really takes to the boots and seems to know he can just go for it with the booties on. The other, Ande, didn't do so well with them. Maybe they don't have 5.10 rubber on them.
Basically, booties are awesome for sharp rocks or hot desert sand.

Very, very cool! They did great! Went up Shasta with a lab before there were booties, and it wasn't pretty (unless you like the color red). I love that area of the Sierra. Perfect High Sierra summit for them.
