Trip Report
Dolomites on skis + St. Anton
Saturday February 10, 2018 12:55pm
I know there are a lot of climbers here on ST like myself that enjoy skiing as much as I do, so here’s a little mountain winter stoke particularly for those stuck in the Sierra this season. Oh well as the old sayings go, “why would you go skiing when you can climb or why would you go climbing when you can go skiing?” Timing is everything and we hit it right in the Dolomites - cold, new and soft. St. Anton, Austria has lots of snow but their storms came in cold and left warm and wet, still a blast albeit firm. Oh the joy to be a mountaineer, Berg Heil !!!

Ok Charlie now I hate you. Or maybe just the fact I wasn’t there with you. Berg heil indeed. Looks like you nailed it. That looks wonderful. Congrats on getting it done!

Glorious! Opens my mind for future Christmas visits to the family north of Milan... We typically miss the good climbing weather and do a walk up a snow-clad peak, but we can bring the skis (free on swissair) and slot in a few days side trip :)

Charlie, nice pics, looks fun. Thanks for sharing.
You’re comment on the storm arriving cold then leaving warm always frustrates.
We’re having the opposite effect here in SW Montana, with many storms arriving warm and wet then leaving cold and dry, forming a great snowpack, w’lottsa strong layers and overall @150% of normal water content. The nearest to a “Sierra” density of pack I’ve seen in my 60 years of interior range skiing.

Charlie, give me a call when you visit in March. You still have contact info? Donnie

while you were away
we had extensive drought, charlie.

in fact one morning i was up early
paying homage to mrs. moon
and i watched our eastern sky
flank from my deck-in-the-ditch
and low and behold no sunrise!

instead god stood up, bent over and
presented his hairy arse, hole and
all to SALUTE THE REPUBLICANS
in this western world. i was not
surprised when he farted out
a dry, hot feces-laden wind and
right before my eyes four trees died.

but not me. i still lived, though i got
holy pink eye.

maybe we should scrape our skis on gravel-snow
up in the round-top region, soon.

welcome home charlie, and thank you for
your kind support of my project while your were
holidaying.

Your trip report reminds me of a trip to Corvara my wife and I took on our honeymoon. The place is stunning and, on a sunny summer day, feels like paradise. We met a local working in the little pharmacy who gushed when he learned we were from LA and how much he would love to live there. "I LOVE Santa Monica" and couldn't wait to go back. Go figure.

Donnie, yes I’ll give you a shout come that first week of March. I hear Bridger has been skiing well with a consistent interval of storms.

Rick, yes we did both on and off piste.....although we didn’t hike or skin much to get the off-piste. The ski descent down the Val De Mizde was the best day ever!!! (Of course).

Off White, that small gondola is the one that goes to the very summit of Valluga (spelling). We skied the north face of the mountain from the summit, a scary side slip down for about 100 feet delivered us to some good skiing on out to Zurs, there is no shortage of ski terrain in the Alberg.....
