Getting my son up Cathedral Peak.

Had a great time taking my son on his multi-pitch outing. Needless to say he was quite worked... definitely pushed his limits on this one.

Good for you and them. My little one hasn't accomplished that feat yet. It is quite a hike for a little one and quite a task for the older one.

Pretty ambitious!

So did the cruxy bits turn out to be type 2 fun or scary memories?

I remember as an adult early in my roped climbing, being spooked by dark skies and wind on the left side of Headstone in JT. Pretty epic to get thunder and lightning and some precip on a multi-pitch at that age!

Good job dads. I had less ambitious Tuolumne plans this summer (backpacking to Clouds Rest) but we had to abort our due to the fires. I haven't been able to get my kids up a real peak yet. Backpacking, easy multipitch, bouldering, yes. Glad it went well.

Awesome! How old are the kids? And what was your system? I can't figure out who went in what order. My 3 y.o. loves scrambling, but he wasn't quite ready for a rope. Hoping to try again soon, and looking forward to big adventures like Cathedral with him down the road a bit.

looks easy,
I've had the best luck just getting them outside without a lot of structure. My middle (he's a boy) wasn't on a gym climbing team like my older daughter was, but he's far more adventurous and loves the notion of exploring vs. climbing with a rope. We hiked back into the Wonderland of Rocks in Josh and he was busy scrambling over this, chimneying up that, I couldn't tear him out of there. My daughter in contrast wanted to hike out so she could boulder. Go figure. We hiked back into Glen Aulin a couple of years ago and they were the best partners because they wanted to stop and explore everything. I enjoy more the chance to do cool things with them vs. just taking them climbing (though no complaints about that when it happens).

Fat Dad, that all sounds familiar. I took him backpacking overnight with my brother out to Chain Lakes in the Emigrant Wilderness a couple weekends ago. With just the two days both days were dedicated to hiking, and I was bummed to disappoint him by telling him we didn't have time to explore as we were on our way out. But I promised him that as soon as the snow melts next season we'll be back out there with a whole extra day of no plans for sure.

Edit: All that being said, we spend a lot of time running around Pinnacles and other local parks with no itinerary outside "have fun".

So Kai is 7, and Oli is 12? Oli is a strong climber and he's on the touchstone team. He just doesn't have much experience outside. I took him and his dad on their first trad & multi-pitch climb on Donner Summit (One Hand Clapping) last summer.

Kai was quite stoked, but there were definitely moments where it was fully in Type 2 fun. He held it together quite nicely, much thanks to Oli and his encouraging words.

So I had Kai tied in with a butterfly on a locking biner about 10 ft above Oli on one rope, and Oli's dad Sam on another rope. I'd lead with Sam belaying me, then I'd belay both of them simultaneously. I got a belay plate after all the yanking I did on this trip. Excited to try it out.

Got in a bike wreck a few hours after I posted this... so sorry for the late responses. In fact I forgot that I had... I'm fine now.

No worries about the delay, and I'm glad you're okay. I like the idea of having the two kids share a rope; it seems like a good way to boost the confidence and fun for both of them, compared for one to be alone and the other being "babysat" by an adult.
