Best-written TR I've read since Yo's stuff. Sharp and creative mind at work. I won't be able to look at HD for the next couple of seasons without thinking "whisper dish."

We ran into these same docile bee-like guys, or close cousins of theirs, on TM's Deviation at Sugarloaf, a month or so back.

The quote from Frost was a keeper:

It’s you, the climbers, who know Yosemite Valley so well. For you have seen it inside and out. You have smelled the impeding storm, seen the clouds swirl below your dangling feet, and felt the inside of its walls. You are the ones most in tune with the nature of this place.

Great ascent, and cheers to a fine writer!

hey there say, gil....

thank you so very much for sharing this...

i am behind on reading the trip reports and have been just jumping in
to encourage folks and say hi, and such...

*been sewing on projects for family that didn't get sent out yet for
holiday... but i am so glad i am getting more free time now...

the trip reports are our equally TREASURED treasures here, in the midst of the treasure of good fellowships and learning from each other...

had to add the edit:

the suspense of natures "outdoors" as to the buzz, was really neat...
very attention-tugging and neat story telling, as to how you did it...

thanks le_bruce, Im still trying to get the real scoop on what those things were and why they were not being eaten up left and right by birds.

Probably Hoverflies...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoverfly

Hoverflies are harmless to most other animals despite their mimicry of more dangerous wasps and bees, which serves to ward off predators.

Awsome trip report. I have not done the face of HD yet and would love too within the next couple years.Been to the valley now climbing for 6 years once or twice per year. Going to college in Minot, ND does not offer the lexury of the beautiful Yosemite Valley. But will be out there next year for Grad school so can't wait.

Love the explaination of the walk back to the car through tourist....

Looks like some species of bee fly. We have one similar up here, but I've never seen them swarm, just as individuals. Nice.
