Trip Report
Incredible Hulk : Red Dihedral
Tuesday June 9, 2015 12:08am
My climbing partner Jeff and I were just out at the Incredible Hulk from June 2nd - 3rd. Started the approach at 6am Tuesday morning, went pretty smooth for our first time out there. Not too much snow until we started getting close to te base of the hulk. Got to the base around 9am. Took our time setting up camp, made some coffee and tried to take in the moment. The weather was perfect, sunny and in the mid 60's, not a cloud in the sky. We watched a group just starting up the Red Dihedral and after resting our legs and drinking a warm cup of coffe got the motivation to get some climbing in while we still had so much day light. Originally our plan was to hike in, check out the base of the climbs and take most of the day just resting and enjoying the high Sierra. We started climbing around noon and reached the top of pitch 10 just before you hop over the back side by 6pm. Seemed like we were moving pretty fast until we got to the back side. Much of the 3rd class ledge system was covered in knee-waist deep snow... This just made things a bit more interesting. We navigated through the snow, post holing, crawling, tiptoeing across until we were at the base of the last final chimney systems. Still in my climbing shoes soaked to the bone (wishing I would have changed into my approach shoes) I started up the "last pitch". Some of the worst and most horrifying climbing I have ever expirienced. Finally we managed to make it to the summit by 8pm just as the sun had gone down. Now to find the rappel and walk off. Took us forever to find the rappel through some not so inspiring 3rd class down climbing we made it to the gully... Finally we were off this beast. Not yet... Now to navigate more snow the entire way down the south gully. It too was also filled with snow. Sliding snd post holing down we finally made it back to camp by 11pm...17 hours of movement, not a bad day. 👌
