March for Science -
Saturday April 22, 2017 3:53pm
I'm a climber. I'm a scientist. That pretty much sums up my identity. Now' I'm not a big shot, I'm just a humble biochemistry professor, who has a humble research program at a smallish state school. Its takes a lot to make me angry.

Scientists are not particularity political, but today tens of thousands of us took to the streets to send a message to Washington -- Science is important,we won't be quiet as the administration strip funding and institutions to their bones.

I happened to be in Chicago for a conference, so I stood with my colleagues -- we sent a message -- science, evidence these are what make America great.

40,000 people took to the streets of Chicago - I hope (but doubt) the White House heard our message

I wonder if the President knows? His xenophobia will be the death of this nation. I have 5 graduate students in my lab, all bright, work hard and want to contribute to the knowledge of our species. Four of the five students are not American. They are afraid -- will they be sent home? Can they build a future in this country they have grown to love? The future scientists of America are future Americans. Without science there is no innovation and America loses its place as the leader of the world. That innovation comes from immigrants. Diversity is our strength.

Right on man. Here was in front of City Hall in Los Angeles today:

I have no experience estimating crowd size, but 10,000 seems a reasonable estimate. The parade of people spanned many city blocks. I thought we were near the end, and after the area in front of city hall was filled in, I could look back and see street-wide streams of people still coming in from blocks away.

I was at the march in Los Angeles. They were expecting 10k, but I heard that there may have been 50k?. It was 90 degreees, and that may have cut down crowd size.

San Diego had a huge crowd, based on comparison to the Womens March my estimate would be 10k (hardly scientific :). Standing room only on the train down from North County

Nice. Wish I could've dragged my kids down to the march in LA, but it's their Spring Break and had full calendars. Thanks for representing. Sadly, like the aftermath of the Arab Spring, this recent election has demonstrated the failings of democratic elections.

My family marched in San Diego yesterday. 15,000 by all accounts, and it was hot with little to no breeze. Think my favorite sign was "There is no Planet B". Good job people!

New Zealand Green Party co-leader James Shaw tweeted a popular chant from the marchers: "What do we want? Evidence-based science! When do we want it? After peer review!"

Nanobody, Thanks for your trip report from Chicago... love all the signs..

Good to see posts from other cities , thanks all.

My town, Chico Ca had a little over 2000 folks marching for science...Very cool to see so many college students, school kids and families in attendance.

Favorite sign... with a friend in the picture.

Well, I guess there are some scientists who turned up at these Libtardian functions. Most however are understandably averse to the unholy union of science and politics.

The American Left , in general, has shown very little squeamishness in this regard, unfortunately. Their mission has always been to deliberately blur the necessary distinctions between science and bureaucratic initiatives. When that distinction becomes effectively fused, so that an ordinary citizen has lost the recognition of there being a radical difference between science and politics, then another totalitarian milestone has been breached.

Science has become a sort of heraldic shield for the "progressive left"-- to be used in both offensive and defensive political warfare, and to provide the necessary justifications. It has never quite worked however. Sooner or later such justifications are either ultimately revealed as outright lies or as manipulative front pieces, strictly designed for the on-going acquisition of political power.

These type of events are sort of like ducks, if it walks like a charade, talks like a charade, it is a charade.

The scientific community is justifiably concerned by the present administrations attempts to substitute ideology for rigorous, objective analysis and critical thinking. Everyone, regardless of political affiliation, should reject this approach and challenge it at every opportunity.

While science, is not political per se, implementation of policy based on science and how science is funded is certainly political -- but it's is non-partisan.

Cancer and climate change don't care if you are a Democrat or Republican.

There is actually wide spread congressional support for science research from both parties, especially biomedical scientific research.

The White House is departing from normal partisan lines by attacking science - especially academic freedom and funding.

Every month Scientific America has an article about how the Republicans are trying to defund, deny, obstruct or re write...science

All scientists are in the crosshairs of the anti-science crowd, the American Right Wing

Maybe in biomedical, but in almost all other science, the right wing leaders are trying to take science down so they're big moneyed interests can do whatever with out being accountable to the damage they cause
