Of Rambles And Mules, A Tarbuster Tribute Of Sorts. Many Pix.

I hope you all had a marvelous Labor Day weekend, we did! That's what this is about.
Tarbuster was the first to welcome me to Supertopo, and has inspired us all with his Rocky Mountain Rambles. That's what this is about.
Love of the mountains is so much more than just clawing our way up a rock or hunk of ice. That's what this is about.
We've been ramming it down the throa.....er, I mean sharing it with our kids their whole lives. That's what this is about.
We had tickets to the Taos Mountain Music Festival for months, a full day of great music culminating with the mighty Gov't Mule!! We still decided to make a bit more of our trip. So we drove up on Friday, set up camp in the dark and I drug everyone out of their warm sleeping bags at 5 AM!
The objective is Wheeler Peak, the highest summit in New Mexico at 13,161 ft.
It is 16 miles round trip, which will be a new family one day record, if we make it. Almost the entire second half of the hike is above 12,000 ft!

These are tough kids. They've climbed Emery Peak in S. Texas at 9,000 ft, Johnston Pass in AK at 26 miles (3 day trip), done the recent Sandia hike, and lots more.

Cool TR survival. Much appreciated, and love the mushroom pics. Looks like a shrimp or rosy russula in the first photo, some amanita muscaria, and some fried chicken mushrooms in the bottom photos. I also think there are some Golden Pholiota shrooms. If you don't already have it, try David Arora's "All That The Rain Promises and More" field guide. It is great and really helps with the fungi ID. Guido, you old dog, it's the same camera, but I learn by trial and error. Manual, what manual...there's a manual?
Okee Dokee, limping made lots of rest on Sunday a requirement.
Luckily there was a ton of good music and food to be had!

Thanks - very nice! Crimpie and Cosmic will be all over the bird thing, and no doubt we'll soon have threads discussing whether or not birds should be taken climbing, and which bird to use for stick clipping.

Actually Anders, I was a little concerned about the bird being up at that elevation for so long. Didn't figure it would be a problem as long as we kept feeding and watering her, but couldn't help fretting a bit.

Fritz, I don't know, if you had seen us walking around on Sunday and Monday.....there was quite a lot of suffering going on.
I don't know why I added a 25 lb block of red granite to my pack for the hike down. I'm talking all the way from the top, but I sure did want that hunk of rock....
I earned it!
Can anybody say Gov't Mule?!?!?!!!!!
Yes, Amber and I got up close and personal later in the show!
Closer than we got at the D.C. shows we saw!!

Here ya go Survival.
These are from the north side of the "hill."
Who hauled the cement and pipe up here? Not me!
Middle Fork Lake
If you go in from the Red River side you can start up towards Middle Fork Lake and take the Lost Lake trail to Lost and Horseshoe. Then hit the summit and circle around back to Middlefork. Most flat landers can make it in about 8 hours and you hit three of the most beautiful lakes in Northern NM.
I have been is some SCARY storms up there!

I missed this the first time, but it has all it takes to make it a new "best trip report ever": birds, peaks, family, *!!!New Orleans!!!* blues, cool costumes, happy looking kids. OK, maybe it could have used some climbing, but given my recent posting history, I'm so not complaining.

Not much, mostly trails with the old folks.
But the girl is being pulled up to varsity basketball as a sophmore with the hard work ethic and the badass 3 point shot.
The boy, 8th grade, just broke his school record on a 1 mile cross country course yesterday! 5:49.

That looks like a great and dense collection of memories!
To get thumbnail pics to show up in the list of trip reports, you have to have at least one picture using the "photo" button rather than using the IMG tag with an external image. I usually do external pics in my trip reports, but try to include one with the photo button for this purpose.
