Respect for Your Elders - an OT photo TR
Sunday June 23, 2013 5:21pm
A friend and I have been cruising around the Sierra eastside for the last couple weeks; predominantly cragging, with some longer routes thrown in. But we needed a break, so yesterday we headed up into the White Mountains for a look at the ancient bristlecone pines. Awe-inspiring, to say the least.

Here's a ton of photos.

Bump for a good subject and pretty pictures. It makes me miss the area, though!

The upper elevations of the White Mountains seemed to be composed of a lot of limestone.

These are the oldest living single organisms on Earth, the oldest individuals a mere century short of 5,000 years. There are clonal organisms that are older but not single individuals like these pines. There are three species of them. Pinus aristata; Pinus longaeva; Pinus balfouriana. P. longaeva is growing in the Whites.

The oldest known specimen (named Methuselah) is wisely not even identified by location in the Whites for fear it will get trashed by vandals.

There are a number of wild populations of these species and their habitats don't overlap (any more).
