I've been a desert rat of some kind most of my life. I've been to deserts in many places in the USA and overseas. I've been climbing in California most of my life. But through all of that I've never been to Death Valley. (or surrounding area)

Just about time don't you think?

I've listened to one old timers stories so many times that I had to go find out a little for myself.

The kids were on spring break and they're always up for adventure.
Our first stop was Eureka Dunes!

It's always hard to draw the line between vacation/relax, and adventure go for it. Especially as I get older/lazier!

What a beautiful place though eh? (For those that appreciate barren at least!)

The Last Chance mountains are beautiful!

So are the biggest dunes in California!

Here we are hiking away from the dunes and into the Last Chance Mtns.

I have no idea of the name of the canyon we were headed into.

So easy to lose track of where I am in creating a TR.
Back in a bit!!

That wall up there was HUGE by the way, you just can't tell from the photo.

I was just thinking, Survival is starting to piss me off not posting a TR in awhile;-) Death Valley is awesome and a place I need to check out more of. Crazy to think of the covered wagons crossing that stretch of death. Thanks Bruce, great pics as always and more to come.

Hiya Dingus!
Well my brand new DV map shows Last Chance Mtns immediately east of Eureka Dunes, and that is where the sun was coming up every morning, so....thought I had it pretty well pegged.
I'm not talking about mtns in the distance sunset wise to the west. I mean the peaks east of the dunes that we hiked into.

Guess I wouldn't be the first to be lost in such a place eh?! HA!!!

Boy did his first "solo" camp on top of one of the big dunes, to star gaze. Even though the big moon put a hurt on the star gazing.

No worries man. Like you said, names almost have little meaning in a place like that.
Just thinking about those first 49ers trying to push through there in their wagons gave me the gawdamn willies!
I've been through enough harsh stuff in life to know that I'm damn glad I wasn't with them!
It's not just Death Valley, it's a few hundred miles east of there and a couple hundred miles west of there! Valley after valley after range after range, holy water shortage Batman!

Girl didn't want to be looked at in the morning, HA!

What the hell is the name of this big ass hole? Behebebeebee?

Next up, Panamints!! (I think...) :0)

Whoa, y'all got snow up here?

Our camp above Wildrose was at 7,000 ft.
Chilly!!

The charcoal kilns were huge! Can't imagine building those by hand in 1870.

So off we went, to Wildrose Peak.

Snowball time!

Picnic time!!

Bonsai time!

Couldn't resist .., I just got out of the Eureka and Saline valleys .

Definitely a magical place ... check out Steele Pass between the two valleys if you get a chance . I'm not sure the van would make it though :)

I was definitely thinking about the old boy. He's got some new parts and is high clearance for a street cruiser, but he's also got over 100k on him. We drove probably 100 miles of gravel as it was. Some of those out there roads are some long stretches!

Nap time again? 9,000 ft makes you sleepy!

TEAM NAP!

It was too cool that we could see Mt. Whitney AND Badwater Basin at the same time!

Thanks gang. No Reilly, you're right, I didn't find that ghost shaft OR that cabin! Guess I missed a couple spots...or roughly a couple million acres we didn't get to!

Doing a little sacred duty and sprinkling a little of Dad in all the wild places we get to.

Another old man we spotted.

A little ghost town action?

I love the way a Survival TR grows with time. It's like a fine wine, though fine maybe an inapt adjective.

I love Jebus's comment. That's exactly how I felt down there.
It was cool to see a very elemental place like that. Like the bones of the earth laid bare.

A few more ghost town pics, for Ghost and Reilly??
