Trip Report
Tenaya Peak

Finally, Tuesday, (7/20?/10) I got around to doing this thing.
the route follows the left skyline and is somewhat more technical than it appears. Pretty much all shallow fifth class, or 4th +

Got a late start Monday (noon) ended up scouting the approach, but it was too hot, I bailed.
got a preview, though,

Dig the view from the descent; clouds rest ( towering a thousand feet over half dome, all looking at snow creek/tenaya canyon

We are lucky, to be alive, and have opportunities like this. Even if a swarm of 100 + skeeters accompanied me to the summit.

Wait till all the snow has dropped. You'll love it, If you're into this sort of thing. If I (54yr old wheezing at every step) can do it, so can you.

Looks so fun. Thanks!!

(But one should never trust "If I can do it so can you" from one such as Jaybro.)

Nice Jaybro...but we all know that route is total choss not worth doing, crappy approach, tons of skeets, snake infested...especially next Thursday.

Thanks, Jaybro. I love that route, although it's become much more popular than when I first did it in a rain storm in 1976. Still, the buttress is big enough to accommodate many parties, and there are many variations above the snowfield.

By the way, we've found that the most pleasant descent is upstream a bit, eventually ending up behind Pywiak Dome.

Fine route, and fine TR. Thanks again.

Lynnie, I was blown away by that view; the light, difference in rock color from the higher country, the whole deal. Natalie and I looked at the full screen shot and the blue of the shadows inspired a new painting project for her.

I've run over Clouds rest three times, been on Mt Watkins, climbed Washington column a bunch, etc. and I never saw that, like the other day..

Blows me away too, this planet, this place of ours, Jay. Just what you said. You can repeat being somewhere and seeing what it offers And then go there one more time....even outside my own front door...and that one time is different.

The elements of the earth all conspire to create something you've never seen or felt before. Like ekat would say, Magical. Big Smiles and tell Natalie I want to see it when she's finished.

GREAT - that is such a fun climb. The one question I have...

How'd you get DOWN so fast?!? It took us longer to descend than ascend the last time - what a pain in the butt.

Cleo, I hiked on a trail toward that backside lake, then cut around the front and picked a way down between ledges to the east End of Tenaya lake. Had to go back to the BA via Reno, so i couldn't linger. Made it home a little after 10pm. Slept like the dead...

That has to be one of the most painful climbs ever. Same angle, same move, up, up, up....

Thankfully the view is stellar cause the climbing is boring.

Jay,

It sounds like your way down was similar to the way we use. We've found it much easier than the recommended way.

Thanks for posting this. Lori and I did it in 2001 and found it to be a lot of fun. For our descent, we went west down the right skyline as seen from Tenaya Lake. Mostly walking with a little scrambling. We then picked up the trail along the south side of the lake.

Jaybro- Was thinking of doing this route with my mom in a couple weeks. I thought it might be an easy climb for us to practice swinging leads and putting up quick anchors..seems like you just hiked up! Is it silly to try to pitch out the whole thing?

Thanks for posting this. It's one of those "easy" things that I have never gotten around to. I actually wanted to do it over 4th of July but as we were driving through the Meadows it still looked like there was a TON of snow, so we opted for other stuff. I am now re-inspired to do it!
