My brother sent me this today after climbing Art Baker Memorial at Tollhouse yesterday.

Climbed art Baker w Jolley yesterday...hey dude does that look like a rattlesnake above me in that crack??? Oh yes it was lol. F*#king crimping cracks cause I was gripped to jam lol. F*#k that thing but I was not backing off lol

Are you serious? It was in the p2 part?

P1. Lol right in the route just hoping it doesn't fall on me cause it was trying to get away higher and it looked dicey. It slipped then decided f*#k it I'm making a stand, turned around ready to fight but I put out the good vibes. Mainly...if you bite me it'll hurt me but you will definitely die little friend. Seemed to work lol

Sick story Brosef. Art Baker himself would be proud you kept yer act together and dealt with that little buzzworm in style.


Baker is best known for his work on a television series he created, titled You Asked For It (for which he became affectionately dubbed, the "genie with the light, white hair") between December 1950 and January 1958. It was originally named The Art Baker Show, but the title was changed in April, 1951.

ABM Rocks! If it weren't for the crappy rock, the death flake on P2 and all the rattlesnakes.

And people wonder why we Central Californians show such sang froid!

I vaguely remember an episode of "You Asked For It" about climbing, showing the climbing of an overhang with aid slings in the California style. I would love to see that episode again now, to see if my almost sixty-year-old memory has any validity.

Back when I lived down south one of our people brushed a five foot long diamond back off a ledge while leading. I never heard what he said to warn the second.

I first climbed at Tollhouse in February of 1970, and I have yet to see a snake there. In 1968, however, we went to Pine Ridge to climb on the cliff there. As we were rappelling down a chimney, we found ourselves heading into a whole nest of them at the bottom, so we hightailed it out.

I found out later that those snakes were perhaps the least of our worries. In those days, and maybe still, the Pine Ridge cliff was very close to a plantation of "a coveted California cash crop" (to use the words of an early Tollhouse guidebook).

This story needs a snake pic from the area. Them buggers are out now for sure and most who see em usually add a few inches to their story for effect. But, seeing any snake on a climb is everyone's biggest fear! Cool texting!

Nice radish. Here's one from Black Mountain right across the way from Tollhouse.
I was standing on that little rock in front of it for around thirty seconds before I even noticed it.
Was a beautiful animal. I guess the very next week the property owner saw it in the same spot and killed it. Some people just hate them.

I have seen snakes in cracks before, but never a rattler. Also have heard the horror stories of pulling onto a Ledge and being face to face with one.

Don't laugh too hard about rattlesnakes on climbs --
you can lose a finger due to swelling, and/or pay huge hospital
bills for the antivenom if you don't have health insurance.
