GRAND STAIRCASE ESCALANTE NATIONAL MONUMENT

Yes folks, it's another in my long line of NOT climbing Trip Reports.

But this is my way of thanking you all for your great support and advise over the years. And this trip was no different, I took your advise.

We DID go straight to the North side of the monument. We DID hike upper and lower Calf Creek Falls.

But the best were the moments when we just took off without a plan.

One case in particular was a canyon that we accidentally stumbled into. We were supposed to head into a canyon running to the north, but through a Simple Twist Of Fate, started into a canyon running south. I realized almost immediately that we weren't headed North, but what lay ahead was so beautiful and empty that we decided to just go with it.

I named it Fate Canyon, even though it surely has another.

Lots of petrified in Fate Canyon, but this was the only "log" sized piece we saw.

What? No epic? We had a near catastrophe - ALMOST ran out of beer in Blanding!
The German in the room next to us was in a state of near panic when he
found out there was NO BEER there! I hate seeing grown men cry.

A good option for petrified wood down that way is the Wolverine Petrified Forest. It's a long way from anywhere, but the day I went, we saw no one else.

I don't understand. Where is the moss? And the slide alder?

It's very beautiful, in a sort of hot-and-dry way, but surely you had to fight your way through slide alder and devil's club to get there, right?

Survival! Thanks for sharing the adventure.

We kinda, sorta liked Calf Cr. Falls.

Otherwise, no reason to go there.

Nice adventure, thanks for posting yer pics. That's the thing about the Utah canyon country, there are no wrong choices - so long as your choice doesn't end in a self amputation it's all good.
