Whew, that is a classic epic (and those are the ones we remember in the long run)! Gotta say it's not a climb I'd ever entertain threesomes or backpacks on - speed and efficiency are of the essence.

Agreed, the backpack was a bad idea.

We did it with a single 60m to keep the commitment level up and each wore a Metolius 'Big Wall' gear sling with a 1 Liter bladder, keys, and a protein bar. We hydrated like mad the night and morning before stepping on the trail.

Wow. Truth. Love that part of the trip report. You guys look like a fun group. But I'm glad I didn't get stuck behind you. How about doing some other chimneys first. Then also see what your time is on Frogland (7 pitches). If you can car to car Frogland in a @ a 2-3 hours and get up other 5.9 chimneys you should be able to do Epi in 9 hours. Doing Frogland will also acquaint you with the bottom of the Epi descent so in case you get there after dark, you'll have a light mental edge knowing it from before.

Nice one guys, As much as it sucks not making it to the top (I bail of routes all the time) Its always better to bail and make it down safely then to try and keep going and get yourself in trouble.
