Tricked the kids into a little climbing!

Ok, that's about the extent of the climbing. But it was a pretty day. I thought we would go amble on Golden Gate Bridge and then head over to California Academy of Sciences. After parking in the boonies because the parking lot was filled near the bridge, we wandered off to an old military installation and then down a trail through the cliff line to reach a beach of never been to. We weren't prepared with bathing suits etc, and the kids wanted to be "free" like out in the boonies of the volcanic tablelands east of the Sierra. Well, there were a lot of people around on one end of the beach but on the hike down the kids saw some folks in their birthday suits in a separate cove (which gave them the idea).
As it turns out, the birthday suit scene seemed a little more tilted in the guy direction. Well, pretty exclusively tilted in that direction. So we compromised, with our own little encampment past the crowded family and fishermen section, around the corner past the comfort zone of most sensible family people, but far enough away so as to not have any up close and personal encounters. Except for the occasional passers by en route or returning from further adventures.
We at least had enough space to make it a beach day without the planning that would normally go with it. It really is a beautiful spot.

Nice work Dad! Way to get 'em out there. Along with a few "interesting" learning opportunities.
Knew that beach the minute I saw the initial shots. Stunning views but there is that one end where folks are letting is "all hang out" alright. :-) I think I wandered down there with my baby daughter 25 years ago and inadvertently had a bit of a surprise! Ha ha.
I guess some things haven't changed!
I think this is called Black's Beach, by the way. Allegedly the only reasonably swimmable beach in SF (unless you are a Polar Bear or mutant).
Thanks for all the nice photos!

Way to go Nutz!!
We can never underestimate the power of being a dad, who's just there, doing the day to day.
What I saw as a desperate struggle when I was a single dad my older daughter sees as a highlight in her life. Dad being there, day after day, doing the mundane, to her was as much a savior as it was to me.
Well done dad.

Those kids are in danger of falling and hurting themselves.
Or growing up to be climbers.
Or thinking it's OK to take risks, explore the unknown or rarely-traveled, challenge themselves.
Cease and desist right now, or you'll be sorry.

Great point Tami- sharing the way the world is bit by bit and giving them the space and time to think it over and ask questions and decide how they want to relate to the world.
Thanks all for feedback in general. I hadn't consciously thought of it before, but I realize I do use Supertopo as a parenting support network to validate the things I want to share with the kids and the values I want to impart and the spirit of outdoor adventure, especially when they may conflict with the way the kids' mom or parents of the kids' friends see the world. I've navigated a fine line between the type of stuff I want to share with the kids, and being subject to the judgments of others in a divorce process.
All that stuff is thankfully in the past, and the result of years of fighting to claim my right to influence their lives, is that now I have the space to participate in little adventures like this, which never would have happened if I just went with the flow years ago. I better enjoy all the fruits now before puberty and teenage rebellion kicks in ;)
