A pleasing walk on the Southside Trail. I had no previous experience on it. I wanted to take Marcel up Gunsight. Neither of us has a car, the shuttle loop's not running, so we went old school. We walked, as have others in our position--the early RCS folks, for example. We had got off to a late start from Merced, catching the last a.m. bus at 10:45, which would have been fine, but we needed to get headlamps and a few things at the Mtn. Shop. Then we had to take the cattle-car to the Lodge (enduring horrible bus-driver bear jokes the whole way!).
By the time we got out of the crowd and into the meadow, leading to Sentinel, I felt good, still, about our making it to the summit of LCR. But taking photos and my time caused us to dawdle too long and so we gladly found a friendly mid-sized group of boulders to set up in so that the rain wouldn't surprise us. I spent the first two hours making up my mind not to remain in there, since I would be more comfortable stretched out on pine needles or sand. I got up and went out with my camera and walked in the moonlight, intermittent but plenty good to illuminate the trail, which I never left, as I didn't need to (except that one time--and I buried it well, Facelifters).
I came back to the bivvy and took my bag to a spot I'd found no nearer the road, still hidden, but sooo relax...
I had plenty of deep sleep, not bad. I got up and went back to keep Marcel company and we ate and had a power nap and the birds were tweeting, so I pushed him and we got rolling, went to the road and straightaway got a ride with Rick Ranger the Wilderness Finger-Wagger for the NPS, who delivered us to the Park Headquarters. His name is Mark, not Rick, and he is a prince. Thanks, Mark.
I didn't use the telephoto on this trip. I left it on the bus! But the bus driver, Bob, married to a former phone company employee who was my dad Boomer's office supervisor, found it and I have it back safe and sound. Whew! Magic, ya know?
This trail's eminently suitable for mtn. bikes, folks who don't know.

I love it, Mouse. I just wish I was able to get to the Valley last week. At least my daughter made it -- and disovered that her boyfriend's dog bouldered better than she did.

Good stuff! It's been a while since mine eyes have drunk deeply from Yosemite. So many lovely flashes pop in my head to keep me smiling. Thanks!
