Dos Rios

There are several great places to boulder near Dos Rios and even some topropes, cracks, and a few sport routes. All the areas are just a stone’s throw from the highway and the crystal clear Eel River and have some of the best swimming holes in the world on sandy beaches shaded by steep, water-polished boulders. The rock is so polished in places that it’s as slick as glass and requires unique techniques like “campusing with feet” and “controlled slipping” to ascend the sculpted boulders. In this book I cover the four main areas: The Glass Boulders, The Hideout, The Main Fork Boulders and Swallow Rock/Middle Fork Boulders. Swallow Rock is the big, 100-foot mini-Half-Dome-looking monolith that’s visible upstream from the Dos Rios bridge. The Middle Fork Boulders are all the boulders around Swallow Rock.

Free camping can be found along the Eel River and in the nearby Mendocino National Forest - pay attention for no camping or trespassing signs and respect all rules and regulations and locals.
