Overview
FA: Dorothy Dern, Richard Leonard, H. Stewart Kimball, Philip Dern, Alfred Dole, 1951.
The earliest known technical route on Lembert Dome, the Beginner’s Route takes staircase ledges to a short face with a bolt protecting the crux. While not runout in general, the very traversing nature of the route and the angled ledge beneath the crux would make it difficult to catch a lead fall without slack in the system leading to a ledge fall. Dick Leonard was one of the first technical rockclimbers in the U.S., with ground-breaking ascents of the Cathedral Spires and Shiprock in the 1930s, and he was, like his frequent partner David Brower, a prominent environmental activist.
