Lake Tahoe Bouldering, California, USA
Approach time: 1 - 15 minutes
Season: Year Round Number of problems: 45 Type of rock: Granite Overview
There used to be a pie shop right near Sawmill Road, where you turn off to find these boulders. Supposedly the pies were fantastic, but the shop’s long gone. It’s too bad, but change is the only thing you can depend on. Since I started climbing and bouldering at Pie Shop in the early 1990s its persona has changed many times. To me it was first known as a cool slab climbing area (back when slab climbing was cool)became more of just a bouldering area with crazy locals hooking up Bachar Ladders, manufacturing pocket problems and variations on top of variations being named. When bouldering got more popular around the turn of the century it lost most of its appeal due to other steeper and just better boulders being found nearby. That would all change again and Pie Shop would be on the map once and for all as South Lakes premier bouldering area when Steve Francis did the first ascent of the mega classic Pimp Juice. The other problems vary widely from short and hard to moderate and highball. Notable Bouldering Problems
Pimp Juice V9 and all of its partners in climb, Razor V1, Mars Attacks V3, The Pig V4. Photos
