Lake Tahoe Bouldering, California, USA
Approach time: 2 minutes
Season: May-November Number of problems: 25 Type of rock: Granite Overview
Aptly named, the Sun Wall bouldering area is good anytime the weather isn’t horrible. You can slog up through the snow, take off your winter gear and climb in a t-shirt in January. Nice. Most of the problems are V1-V3 with flat landings. This wall also has some of the best highballs and solos around – they’re huge and terrifying, but not that hard. Which can be kind of a problem, actually, since getting suckered into doing one of these babies is that much easier. Whatever you decide, don’t do it just for photos or props – if you fall off you’ll drop 30 feet, bounce once and drop another 20 feet on the way into traffic—a pad will do you no good at all. Sunny southern exposure means the Sun Wall boulders are climbable year round, but in the winter, you will have to walk through tons of snow to get to them. Notable Bouldering Problems
